| Thorin had promised himself, his mares and the legacy he came from that he would one day return to the mountains. That time had come for him. The white stallion believed he had picked the right time. It had just transitioned into summer, and whilst the weather was not too hot, it was still dry and warm enough to allow any injuries he might sustain to heal up quickly. He had chosen the Loftlands as his target, as they were the highest mountains in Kormada, and they reminded him of home. He had rooted out a land he thought was ideal for him and his growing herd. Sunset Mesa was high and tucked away, but it was also breathtakingly beautiful. The Gypsy Vanner stallion liked to think he picked things for their aesthetic value as much as for what they were worth. He hoped that the wonderful land would soon be his own.
He had skulked around the place in the past few days, being confident that no harm would come to his mares in Infernal Meadows whilst he looked into a new home for them. There was a smell of stallion that lingered about the land, but it was long gone stale and he could smell no trace of mare on the wind either. Whoever owned the land was a bachelor, and Thorin was confident in his chances of winning. There was the possibility of the owner not even being alive anymore as the smell was so old, but the pale stallion couldn’t let his guard down. He had fought in the past and was ready to again for what he wanted. So without further ado the blanched male had made his way over to the common grounds. Instead of veering left towards the homeless where he usually frequented he took the less trodden path towards the battle grounds. He had lingered by the borderline for a few days, not wanting to fight whilst tired and hungry, before staking his challenge.
He moved into the Battlegrounds, the sun high in the sky of the midday heat. Thorin hoped his lighter coloured coat may give him an advantage, particularly if his rival was a darker skinned stallion. Although he did not stand very high he was still impressive – a solid bulk of muscle, the small scars that littered his lower legs and chest were not entirely visible, but by the way he crept over the red land it was clear that Thorin was used to this sort of thing. Even as a youngster he had been bought up to know how to fight and how to win, and it had been ingrained into him since he was a colt. His clear blue eyes looked out over the bare land, taking the smell of blood and testosterone before picking a good spot for his battle. The alabaster stallion headed towards a large boulder that loomed out of the landscape, and situated himself close to it. He was only just bigger than a pony, and didn’t want to give his opponent a lot of space for galloping. Thorin was not the quickest but he hoped his tight turns and strength would give him an advantage.
His azure eyes looked out over the battle grounds, before calling out in a deep voice. “I, Thorin, challenge Animal for the rights to Sunset Mesa.” His voice rumbled before the white male fell silent once more. His tail swished about his hocks, feeling the sweat break out round the bases of his ears as he waited for the other stallion to arrive.
