be a bright red rose come bursting the concrete
The little mare was sure she'd never been to this place before. Every inch of the Homeless Grounds was unfamiliar. Every horse she passed was unknown and an absolute stranger to her. She didn't recognize the shape of any of the trees she saw, or any of the scents as she breathed in the cool Autumn air. Despite that, she trotted through the Homeless Grounds, smiling fearlessly at every horse she trotted past. She hoped one of the stallions would flag her down and start a conversation with her, but none did. So she continued to make her way to a quieter part of the Homeless Grounds, one without so many other horses, though there were still plenty around. She came to a halt, hoping a stallion would notice her and come over.
She lifted her head as high as she could, her long flaxen forelock falling away from her eyes. She tried to look over the backs of the other mares, but without any luck. She knew for a fact that she wasn't tall, she was barely even a horse, after all. The fact didn't bother her, but it made times like this frustrating when all she wanted was to be noticed, but she was literally stuck in the shadows of others. The mares would always tower over her, but the fact that her coat didn't stand out much against theirs didn't help at all. Most of her fur was the average red that came with a chestnut coat. About the only interesting part of her looks was the white on the insides of her legs and on her stomach, marking her as a mealy chestnut. She lowered her white muzzle and quietly began to graze, ready to wait as long as it took for a stallion to come up to her.

Mairon had been in the homeless grounds for days, in search of mares to accompany him in his land at Imperial Point, located in The Offland where only alliances allowed to claim this land were the lights and neutrals resulting in a peaceful territory. Imperial Point is quite a small land with a mountain as its peak overlooking the majority of the land, enough grass for a large herd and the water supply didn’t look like it was going to die down anytime soon, from what he can remember when he was last there. Now that Mairon had been in the homeless grounds for a couple of days now, he had noticed that mares were everywhere, ready for claiming, some attracted him so he approached them, some didn’t so he left them there. The homeless grounds had little to graze on but enough for Mairon to keep him content for now. Now that there were so many mares were in this zone, it got overcrowded and sometimes exasperated Mairon. He was now on a mission to find a peaceful place, not expecting to see any mares appear on his search, though he wouldn’t mind if a mare or two did appear.

Cool autumn air lightly breezed over the top of him and throughout the grounds, surrounding his current environment in coolness. Mairon calmly walked passed the crowded mares, not fussed, until he saw a small looking, mealy chestnut mare who appeared to be trying to look over the crowd of mares, she seemed lonely and appeared to be trying to catch some stallion’s eye. Mairon continued to watch this pretty little thing, she was quite entertaining to watch, a little grin crossed his facial expression and he started walking in her direction. The small mare was grazing on the few bits of remaining grass around here, when he got close enough the tall dappled coloured stallion came to a halt, standing only a few feet away, but a respectful distance from the mare so have her air.

Another light breeze swept over the stallion, Mairon continued to watch the mare in silence, by now he was assuming she would notice his presence by now. He politely cleared his throat before saying, “bit crowded in the the homeless grounds isn’t it?” his question wasn’t really a question, it was more of a rhetorical question. Mairon paused for a brief moment and continued, “name’s Mairon, yours?”

LEON
No, you can tell 'em all now
I don't back up, I don't back down
I don't fold up, and I don't bow
I don't roll over, don't know how

This was the four year old's first outing. For the last two seasons he has surveyed The Stills to ensure it would be a suitable territory to call home before he started trying to persuade mares to pledge themselves to him. What kind of a stallion would Leon be if he led a mare home to a dangerous pitfall of a land, it was his first step of thinking for others instead of just himself. Truth be told a lot of his foal hood had been spent looking after himself, his parents didn't have much to do with his upbringing. From a young age he has thought about what he would do, how he would carry himself in the adult world. He didn't like the idea of having to impress others, he wasn't good at lying and he certainly wouldn't change who he was to benefit impressions.

As his mind wandered his body did the same until he eventually wandered into a lesser crowded area. There was a mare who was just a tad shorter than himself it looked like, Leon wasn't the tallest stallion out there though, after all. Her coat was a striking shade of chestnut, one he hadn't seen before. Leon was an intriguing dapple buckskin paint, a combination he hadn't seen on another equine so far. At least this gave them two things in common off the bat, their height, or lack there of, and striking appearances. Being his first encounter in the homeless grounds he felt this was reasoning enough to approach, he had to bite the bullet sooner or later, he preferred sooner.

The distance between them grew shorter with each step, brown eyes swept briefly over the form of the other stallion, who was busy speaking to the mare to notice Leon's arrival. Upon coming close enough into conversation range Leon caught the mention of the other stallions name. "Good day Mairon." Leon was hoping to get his attention, a firm nod offered. "Mairon annnnd...?" His nod was extended to the pretty mare with a smile. Though young Leon knew no good would come of blatantly being rude to his other male counterparts, instead he would reserve it until a time they were deserving of it. "My name is Leon." Feeling as if any additional exchanges of words would be unnecessary and over exaggerated. He decided that now would be the time for silence as he awaited for the fiery toned mare to decide how to react to having the two of them approach.

WELL SWEET MOTHER TERESA ON THE HOOD OF A MERCEDES BENZ

i did not come here to tell you how this was going to end
The autumn leaves clashed brilliantly against his snowy coat as he trod around the homeless. Thorin was a common sight in the common grounds now, with no intention of leaving for his plain-like home until the season was over and it grew too cold for most equines to come here. The scent of the mares was intensified thanks to the time of year, and he dryly wondered how many females had chosen this time of season to come here in the hope their newly chosen stallion would sire a foal for them. The Gypsy Vanner stallion wasn’t worried. He had one mare already in Infernal Meadows, she would wait for him he was sure. If not, she was not worth his time. His nostrils flared, catching the various smells of trees, smaller animals and the overwhelming stench of mares in season. He was surprised at the other stallion’s seemingly sense of self-control, or at least the ones he had met briefly.

Thorin was striking in a more conventional way. He was white, and had been born the same pale shade he sported now, unlike his grey siblings. He had watched his black and bay sisters grow into their grey coats, and knew he was different. He was only small, at around the pony mark, but his heavier draft frame saved him from looking totally ridiculous in the company of the other stallions on this planet, who all seemed to tower over him. Teamed with his azure eye colour, he was no showy pinto or appaloosa, but he was certainly a sight one would remember. The Gypsy Vanner’s unusual appearance had a knack of getting him into trouble, as his enemies tended to remember his pale coat easily.

He didn’t like the leaves falling, because they covered the receding grass, and Thorin had a healthy appetite. He knew his time here was ending, and he would return to the greenery of Infernal Meadows after a few more days here. It wasn’t the nearest territory to the common grounds, nor was it somewhere the alabaster stallion was overly happy with, but it would do for the meantime. His blue eyes caught on a little mare some distance away. She was vibrantly red, and despite already having two stallions crowding her, Thorin altered his course towards her. As he neared the group, he found on closer inspection she was almost the same height that he was, which pleased him. There were not enough smaller horses on the planet.

She was grazing, and it almost seemed to rude to interrupt her. The second stallion, some kind of buckskin (they were similar in appearance to Thorin) was speaking. Coming up on the outside of the slightly taller male, Thorin decided to keep quiet. Instead of introducing himself, a quick nod was given to his rivals before his blue gaze went directly back to the mare, thinking that his introduction was better saved when the chestnut female was giving him her undivided attention.

The grass she'd chosen to graze on was dry and losing its color. It was no surprise to her, though. Autumn was flying by and soon enough winter would arrive. With the arrival of the snow and ice, grass would be scarce and what little there was would be practically tasteless. The sturdy little mare would survive, though. Her thick winter coat would grow in, keeping her warm while she looked for her meals. By then she'd have a home, too, and hopefully a claimer that knew where to find food in the middle of winter. It was impossible for her to be hidden by all of the other, much taller mares forever, after all. At that thought, she glanced up from the ground, checking to see if there was a stallion nearby. To her surprise, there actually was a stallion looking over at her.
She lifted her head, ears swiveling the dappled stallion standing a few feet away. She hadn't heard him approach, being so deep in her thoughts. He could have been standing there for a few seconds, or a few minutes. She watched as the stallion cleared his throat and spoke. He was definitely a handsome one with his dappled buckskin coat. He was a lot taller than her, though, maybe two or three hands above her. She smiled despite that, not minding having to look up at him. At this point, she was used to looking up to everyone. “It definitely is, Mairon. I'm Rhode.”
It wasn't long before another stallion had joined them. She'd caught a flicker of movement in the corner of her eye, but she'd passed it off as a stallion going over to speak to a different mare. Now it seemed like that mare was her, surprisingly. She turned her head, ears swiveling with her, to look at the paint stallion that had come forward. She smiled back at him and returned his nod. He was a dappled buckskin like Mairon, she noticed, but was much shorter than him. She listened quietly as he spoke, then replied, “Mairon and Rhode. It's nice to meet you, Leon.”
Then, a third stallion approached. Rhode was starting to think that today was her lucky day at this point. The most she'd been hoping for was one stallion just to say hello, but here she was with two stallion before her and one walking over. Even better, this stallion was shorter than the others, even Leon, the new stallion being just barely above her own height. Her attention turned to him, glad to see another equine that had just barely managed to grow past the height of a pony. He was just as handsome as the others, his white coat and icy blue eyes standing out compared to Mairon and Leon's dappled buckskin hides. She nodded to him, and said, “Hello there. What do you go by? I'm Rhode.”

The company of this little mare would be nice to have in his land at Imperial Point, though she lacked in height her appearance seemed to give her points, nevertheless, Mairon was never one to judge on the basis of looks over personality, he didn’t really care to be honest, he would just like some company to have back at his land. Mairon realized he had never spent even one night back at his recently claimed land which was a disappointment but he didn’t really mind, looking for mares was more important to the stallion, one could say he was mare hungry but Mairon like always, thought much different to others. Mairon didn’t have a plan for his herd really unlike other stallions, causing havoc amongst other stallion’s and their lands or battling for their mares which Mairon hoped would never happen to him, he also hoped he would never have to battle for a mare in his living days at Imperial Point.

The land was yet again quiet, not a word was spoken between this mare or himself except for his polite and formal greeting towards her, but to break the silence around here, Mairon had heard an incoming approach of another. He instantly thought it was another stallion and not to his surprise it was indeed another stallion. Mairon watched this newcomer, he appeared to be young, much younger than Mairon himself. The stallion was not much different than Mairon in appearance which intrigued the stallion, Mairon was a dappled buckskin and this newcomer appeared to be a dappled buckskin paint. Mairon thought yes, they appeared to be different in appearance but we both have dapples! That thought left a smirk across his murky mouth. Both equines lacked in height, which would probably leave Mairon at an advantage, he assumed mares always liked the taller and stronger ones, ones who seemed confident and could offer protection and knowledge.

It wasn’t long until this newcomer had decided to speak, firstly addressing Mairon which caught him off guard, the dappled buckskin stallion wasn’t expecting to be addressed first, especially in front of a homeless mare. Lastly this newcomer had introduced himself as Leon, the dappled buckskin stud had focused on Leon and offered him a sincere nod, though he didn’t bother to speak a word yet since he assumed the mare or another newcomer would probably make their way here.

Flicking his black luscious locks around his hind hocks, Mairon was right; another newcomer had made their way to the group of three which was now four. The new stallion didn’t speak a word as he came at a halt besides Mairon, he let his gaze upon Leon go and focused on this white stallion who stood beside him, nodding towards this one too. There wasn’t much to say to another new rival, he thought. Lastly, the stallion focused on the obscure mare they were all hoping to claim.

The fragile and obscure mare was one could say; cute. He listened intently as the mare had now introduced herself to everyone as Rhode. She was polite to each and every one of them, which was what he was looking for in a mare, it appeared that Rhode didn’t mind having to repeat her name about three times. All was silent amongst the three of them and Mairon had assumed it was his turn to speak up, clearing his husky throat, “It’s nice to meet you too Rhode and every one else here; Leon and someone who I didn’t quite catch the name of…who may you be?” his tone was formal and polite, very much so like Rhode. Mairon stopped speaking, unsure what else to say or what Rhode would like to hear. Mairon had now focused his attention towards the white stallion, waiting for his reply.

The chestnut mare was reserved, polite. She was friendly enough, and Leon could see a tang of spirit in her eyes. The compact hybrid smiled back softly, being new at this he was unsure what else to do. "Like wise, Rhode." Divided as to what he should do next, he fell silent once more. She didn't present a question to neither him nor Mairon, her attention drawing last towards the grey stallion that had approached last. Brown eyes turned to look upon the other dappled buckskin, and although similar in coat color they weren't nearly similar enough to be confused for each other. Mairon was much taller, much taller than all of the others here, his coat a shade or two lighter, and lacked the dun characteristics upon the contrasting white splashes that Leon possessed.

A light breeze picked up, the autumn air bringing a chill. The season was almost over, and soon the snow would begin. He was anxious for this typical season to be over, the mares will all be a bit more, serene, and calmer. He wasn't sure what it was about a mare wanting a foal that startled him so much. He couldn't quite see him as a father, and certainly wouldn't escort a mare home who had such plans in mind. He wanted more than a mare that would just want to give offspring, he wanted determined mares that aspired to be more than lawn ornaments. He had a hunch Rhode was just that kind of mare, her big brown eyes shed far too much intellect to be satisfied with the simple life of a herd mare. Deciding that being silent wouldn't get him anywhere he cleared his throat. "Rhode, would you mind sharing what it is you are looking for in a home?" While he had a good feeling about this vibrant mare, he would be sure of it before he plunged too far into trying for the mare's affections.
