Laier The red dun female climbed the shores of the island, soaked red stringy locks swinging from her roots against her neck and shoulders. Her hazel eyes looked back upon the ocean to the mainland, reminiscent of her past few years of life, confused about certain details. She had been living in Wraith's Gorge with Khrysor for a little more than three years now, longer his other mares, save for Johana. She wondered if she had done something to displease the black overo stallion; why else would he name some passer-by as lead mare? Shaking her head, the mare strides toward more solid ground, delicate hooves sinking into the wet sand. Laier looks around again, hazel eyes closing and opening. Would Khrysor abandon her in her time of need? |

The handsome black and white overo followed the red hued mare closely, his head low. He could sense that laier was upset and it hurt him to know that he was probably the cause. He moved up to her side and tenderly nuzzled her cheek. Laier had been with him for at least three years, and he cared for her greatly. He didnt want her to have to deal with the stress of being a lead mare, especially when she had their children to look after. He had noticed that with this pregnancy she had been more tired than she had been while carrying their previous children and it had him very worried, which was why he had followed her here. "Tell me whats on your mind baby." HIs voice was softer than usual, and he couldnt even attempt to mask his worry for one of his favorite mares. |

Laier When his muzzle meets her cheek, the red dun's nerves are soothed. Her eyelids close, shielding her hazel optics from the world for a brief moment. Then, he spoke, and the mare exhaled slowly. So many things were on her mind, and, despite the looming birth of their child, Laier could only think of being home and what had happened. "D...Did I do something wrong, Khrysor? Something that displeased you?" The red mare turned her brown-green eyes toward her claimer. How she wished she could call him hers, but there had been to much distance. Too much silence. Even though she had given him children, they hadn't bonded. They were hardly any closer than the day they met. |

The black and white overo was desperately worried about one of his favorite and dearest mares. She handt been the same since he had named Roma his lead mare. It wasnt that he favored the paint mare over anyone else, she just had less responsibility than the others as far as children were concerned. When she turned to him and spoke his heart fell. "Oh Laier... Please tell me this isnt about my choice for lead mare... I didnt want to put so much responsibility on your shoulders. Especially on top of the children. Dont you know how important you are to me? Both of you...." He gestured to her swollen barrel while his voice showed just how hurt he was that she would think that she wasnt good enough. He wrapped her in a sort of equine embrace. Laier didnt know exactly how much she mattered to the overo, but he was hell bent on showing her. |

Laier He speaks and, directly afterward, a contraction squeezed at her ribs, pain shooting through her body. The red dun's breathing is slow and controlled, eyes squeezed shut, ears pinned into the red tassels of her mane. She tries not to let the pain seep into her voice. "I could have handled it...Sooner or later, she'll have multiple responsibilities, too." The Hybrid female tries to step forward to begin her search for a birthing place, but another contraction hits. Her tail lashes against her hocks and canons, hopefully not stinging those of her companion. When it ends, her head juts upward, ears still flattened against her poll. She starts forward, head turning in his direction, hoping he would stay at her side. |

He hated this. He really did. He couldnt stand to see one of his most beloved mares in so much pain. He had to stand there, and there was nothing he could do to ease her burden. He hated this conversation. How could he explain that he didnt want her to have the stress he carried on a day to day basis. Her words cut him down to his core and his ears flicked back and he looked away from her. "Cant you understand that I didnt want to put that burden on you for a reason? Being lead stallion, being a lead mare, it makes someone old before their time. I refused to put you in a position that could be dangerous for you, Laier. I would give up my title in a second if I could, but that would mean leaving you and the rest of the herd unprotected. Roma is better suited to the task. Now, I love you, and I dont want to speak any further on the subject." His voice had an unusually stern quality and in his face, the toll that had been taken by his position was more than obvious. He was still healthy, but he had grey hairs in his muzzle and his mane and tail that he was too young to possess. His eyes, once vibrant and full of life were growing tired. A heavy sigh escaped uom as he attempted to comfort the red mare beside him through her pain, wrapping his neck around hers until it seemed her pain had subsided. "Where do we go now, love?" His voice was gentler as he released her from his caress. He wasnt leaving her side until they were back safe in Wraith's Gorge. |

Laier It was hard to say which hurt Laier more: his words or the contractions that had begun to riddle her form nearly constantly. He said he loved her. The red dun looked at the black overo, ears swiveled forward. He asked for direction, and the mare opened her eyes. Looking south, she nodded in the direction. With ground-eating strides, Laier wandered toward the southern landscape of the Foaling Quarry, Khrysor at her side. She stopped only to weather through the painful spasms going through her body. When she could go no longer, the red dun Hybrid came to a stop in a small clearing, just large enough for her to pace in a few strides and space for the overo male. She paces, tail lashing at her sweat-laced sides. The orange-tinted female eventually lays down, having experienced the gut-wrenching feeling of the foal shifting in her womb. This, also signaled with continuous contractions, meant that it was time. The mare groans as she begins pushing, ears pinned into the fiery mass of her mare, nostrils flared and teeth grinding. Long hours begin to pass before the foal begins to move. As its shoulders come forward, the red dun stops pushing, breathing heavily. The prolonged presence of the child begins to rip her, making the red dun bleed more excessively than is normal in birth. After a few moments, Laier is light-headed and dizzy despite laying on the ground. A few moments more and Laier pushes the newborn forth into the waiting world. The foal squirms, more lively than expected of a newly-born horse. His head juts up, legs thrashing as his nostrils then face clear the sac he had been carried in. His brown eyes now serve a function: seeing. Never having used them before, the visions he sees are blurry. After a few seconds, the shapes begin to sharpen and still. The red dun mare eventually raises her head and slowly moves her sweaty body upright to look at the child. She begins to clean him, and the child squirms and settles. She discovers it to be a colt and nearly cries with joy. They finally had a son. Looking up at the black overo male with tearful eyes, Laier spoke. "We have a son." The boy squeaks when his dam stops running her tongue over his body; he enjoyed the warm sensation on his limbs and barrel. At the squeak, and with renewed zest and maternal instincts, Laier throws herself into the common actions of caring for a newborn. When she is satisfied with her job, the red dun nuzzles the black overo colt and looks to his father. "Come see him, Khry. He looks like you." Laier continues to smile and looks down at the colt. |

He had followed her dutifully until she entered the clearing, and was left to pace among the trees. He can hear her groans, and the hours he spent waiting seemed like the longest moments of his entire life. He paced back and forth, unsure if he should go to her or stay where she had told him to. He could smell blood, and that only made him feel more afraid. His heart raced, and his head swam with worries. If something happened to Laier... especially after the way he had talked to her... He would never be able to forgive himself, ever.... A soft rustle causes him to jerk his head into the air, and for just a moment, everything was silent. His heart skipped a beat, immediately running the worst scenario through his mind, almost missing the sound of her voice. The only word that got through was son. Waiting impatiently for several minutes, he leaps forth from the trees at her request, the goofiest of grins on his face. He immediately inspects Laier for damage and a deep frown sets into his face. "You're still bleeding. Why are you still bleeding?" He laid down beside her and scoured her more thoroughly. She seemed okay... but.... just the blood made him uneasy. Forcing himself to resist being overprotective he turned his attention to the perfect colt laying on the ground beside them. He chuckled at the idea that he had helped create something so marvelous. "No, dearest. He is far more handsome than I ever was. What shall we call him?" He exchanged breaths with the tiny figure next to him and laid his head across laier's still slightly swollen barrel sighing in contentment, enjoying such a perfect moment for as long as the gods would allow. |

Laier The red dun merely shakes her head, mind swimming, threatening to succumb to the blackness that nearly overtook her. A smile widens her orange lips as the overo speaks. As Khrysor rests his head across her barrel, interacting with their son, Laier breaths slowly, trying to remain upright. "How about Mikhail?" As the name suggestion leaves her lips, Laier goes limp. Her head drops to the ground as she passes out. It may have seemed to the stallion that something ill-fated had happened to his mare, but the loss of blood, instead of killing her, made the red dun mare pass out. If she loses anymore blood though, Laier could very well die. |
