It was a day that the Rogue had long been dreading. The mare had been in labour for longer than she cared to recall; she’d been trying, somewhat unsuccessfully, to deny what was happening. The unwanted foal she’d carried for so long was finally ready to make its entrance to the world. It had been the cause of much distress for the mare, merely as a foetus but it was an entirely different problem when the foal actually existed. Cortessa had failed as a mother previously; she’d abandoned her own son when he had been solely reliant upon her. And his twin sister had been subjected to an unsavoury upbringing. Now she was off wondering the world without guidance or company and she had obviously never felt the need to be reunited with the dam who had paid her so little attention. Cortessa knew that she’d never be able to forgive herself if she abandoned another foal … Viral would never forgive her if she ran away from the Province again, and she knew now that running wouldn’t solve the problems she’d created. Sweat saturated the mare’s flanks and neck, making her even more uncomfortable on this warm spring night. Her head was dropped low, her lobes turned back in response to the pain which gripped her barrel. She had long since stopped looking round at her heavily distended middle and only occasionally brought a hind hoof up to nudge at the underside of her belly. The foal was overdue, which hadn’t been helping the mare’s mood over the past few days and put greater strain on her already weary body. The journey from the Southern Mainland to the Quarry had been difficult, even for the well-travelled Rogue. She’d left it later than she had ought to, so was being subjected to powerful contractions before she’d even found a place to settle. Many of the most accessible clearings either were in use, or had been used recently which drove Cortessa even further inland, forcing her to endure the pain while on the move. After a while the mare started to panic over whether there would be anywhere suitable left, and started to head into the more open areas of the Quarry in desperation. Eventually he increasing contractions forced the mare to a halt. She couldn’t bear to walk any further and finally started trying to aid the spasms of her uterus. A few sparse shrubs didn’t compare to the privacy of a clearing within the woods, but Cortessa didn’t have the strength to continue looking. The birth progressed quickly and the exhausted mare only lowered her form to the ground in time to give one final effort and deliver the foal. The Rogue lay there for several minutes after the birth, trying to catch her breath before her forelimbs were pulled out infront of her form and the mare hauled herself back onto her hooves. Her limbs shook slightly with exhaustion and her head seemed to spin, but the Rogue was driven by instinct to attend to her newborn. Prime had already risen well above the horizon by the time the colt was on his hooves and sucking; the light revealing just how stunning the newborn was. Cortessa had only ever come across Viral’s sire once or twice, but she knew that this colt greatly resembled Chronic. His eyes were a startling shade of blue and his face was dominated by white – but for a ring of black which circled one eye. Once the colt had suckled, the Rogue forced herself to head home. She was too tired now to decide what she was going to do about the foal long-term and had no intention of remaining within the Quarry any longer than necessary. |
