We have nothing to fear but human stupidity and the squirrels.

A petite golden hued mare shivered in the icy wind. Her bloated body offered little to keep her warm. Her winter coat was barely coming in and it seemed she would freeze to death before then. She worried about her unborn foal. It would freeze before it got off the ground. Why had it decided until now to come into the world. Brown eyes scanned the Quarry. It was eerily quiet. No mares could be found in the throes of birth. A thin layer of snow lay upon the ground. Wind howled from the trees and the only other sound was her labored breathing. Cursing herself. Why had she let herself get in this situation. Curse that stallion. If she ever saw him again she would give him a good kick in the cahones. Sighing she motioned her lovely socked legs forward. Ears were pinned to her golden skull. Her white mane whipped against her neck. She wished her mother was here. Her beautiful mother and her sister. She missed them so much. She had watched her mother help her sister in giving birth and her sister had done the same for their mother. But Jenesis would have no such luck. She was alone. Ever alone. Except for this squirming mass ready to burst out of her. She tried to look around for a cave or a grove that would be warmer then the open but the icy wind stung her eyes causing them to water. A contraction hit her freezing her cold in her tracks. Gasping she turned her head towards her swollen barrel. The wind stopped for a brief moment. In that time she was ecstatic when she spied a cave not far. Such luck. She wanted to believe that her mother was helping her even in death. "Thanks mom. Oh how I miss you. Why couldn't you be here?" The wind began again in earnest. She walked swiftly to the cave. She stood inside happy to be free from the wind. Her muscles ached as she practically collapsed to the mossy floor. She sighed happily even when another contraction hit her. She lay on her side and watched as wind turned to snow outside the cave. Light was fading. She prayed no vicious creatures would happen upon her in this state. Contractions began to his more frequently. She winced in pain. Rolling onto her belly she had tears falling down her cheeks. "Momma I wish you were here." Soon the urge to push came about. It seemed to last forever. The pain was worse than anything she could have imagined. Mother and Jeniva didn't seem to have the same trouble. She detached herself and her mind wandered back to her days with her beloved family. Traveling to the far reaches of the world. Never finding the end. Finally it was over. The foal slipped from her body. She lay on her side panting. She wanted to lay there forever. A blizzard raged outside the cave as light became non existent. She finally rolled onto her belly again and looked at the shivering mass. She rose to her feet and began cleaning it off. Her heart sank when she realized it to be a colt. All these months she has hoped it was a filly. Sighing continued to clean off the fuzzy colt. He was very fuzzy. Fuzzier than she remembered foals being. She didn't know where he got that from. Raising her head she rest her head on the cool damp wall of the cave. The colt began to try and stand. He only tried twice before he found his footing. He stumbled towards his mother in the dark. He was being guided by faint light and smell. Jenesis took pity on her son and nudged him towards her udder. When he began to drink she sighed. Looking out of the cave to the solid white sheet. Happy they were warm in here. When the colt had finished his drink he lie upon the cave floor again. The next morning Jenesis awoke and looked out at the white world beyond their damp cave. Light streamed in and she got a good look at her son. His coat was the same golden hue as hers but he was still very fuzzy. She hoped he would grow out of that. For the next few days they stayed in the cave till she was satisfied he was strong enough to venture out. She didn't know where they would go but they would go somewhere that wasn't so covered in snow. "Come Samson. Its time to go." Samson had been her brother's name. |
