We have nothing to fear but human stupidity and the squirrels.

The brown standardbred mare was exhausted. Her journey from her home seemed to take forever. With each step she could feel the birth of this foal drawing near. Having done this twice before she knew what to expect. Still there was still a little aire of nervousness to her. Sighing she looks at her bloated barrel. Happy this wasn't another set of twins. Her dear sons had been almost too much for her to birth. Castor even came out the wrong way. Pollux looked as if he would never survive. Never a good thing for a new mother. But now at the age of eleven she was older and wiser. Tragedy had struck and she found herself in a new home with a new stallion. His offspring twisting within her. She was eager to meet her newest child. Not really caring about gender. Walking forward the plain mare didn't move far for contractions had begun some time ago and things were progressing rapidly. Lying down on a sandy patch beside an old tree she began to sweat. Rolling to her side she just let nature take its course. Pushing began soon and it seemed it didn't last all that long. After only a few minutes she felt the foal slip free from her. Panting heavily she rolls onto her stomach and looks back at the squirming form behind her. It appears painted like its father. Rising slowly ot her feet she begins to clean off her newest baby. Happy to findo ut that she has a new daughter. This one a painted chestnut. Where did that come from? She wondered. Humming quietly she continued to clean off the filly even as she tried to get up. Over and over she tried to stand only to fall to the ground. Finally she managed to find her footing. Standing unaided for a moment the filly looks at the large horse before her instinct tells her that is where her first meal is. Elora stands patiently as her new daughter finds food. Satisfied when she begins nursing the mare nuzzles her filly's fuzzy rump. Upon finishing her meal the filly turns around and inspects the mare. The two meet nose to nose. Elora is content in this moment. The filly plops onto the ground and is soon sleeping. Elora stands protectively nearby and grazes. For several days mother and daughter rest and bond near that old tree. Till finally Elora decides it is time to return home. "Come now my daughter. Your father will be eager to meet you. You shall be known as Melonie." And with that they headed towards home. |
