asch

A soft rain trickled from the clouds overhead. It was cold out, the new autumn season holding tight to the planet. The clouds encroached, pressing ominously closer and warning of a real storm to come. Asch shivered slightly, his dark eyes on the even darker sky. Perhaps he should have waited another day or two, waited for the bad weather to clear out — but he didn't have that kind of time.

See, Asch had been taking his time. He wasn't particularly eager to start a herd of his own, but he had known the time was approaching ever faster. With Viral's fall, and his subsequent imprisonment, Asch had had to leave the Province for fear of Friction chasing him out. The paint had expected his father-of-sorts to steal his throne back as soon as he could, but that hadn't happened yet. It was at this point that he had decided it was time for him to plant some roots, do something productive.

At least, those were the reasons he had given himself. There was something else, but Asch had managed to convince himself that it was not a contributing factor.

The golden bay had recently witnessed Caius escorting Layla away from the Province, in the direction of the Homeless grounds. It hadn't even occurred to him that ... well, that she would ever want to go there. He had always assumed that her prolonged presence in the Province was simply due to the fact that she was waiting on him to claim a territory, to take her away himself. He had felt like an idiot, realizing that she didn't care about him. Why would she, anyway? They barely knew each other.

The stallion begins pacing, pausing every now and then to shake rain water from his back and unwanted thoughts from his mind. He will be focused on nothing but this battle by the time Shieryon appears, he promises himself.

shieryon

The Vanner's ears pricked forward as the promise of thunder sounded in the distance. It was only sprinkling now, but a storm was on its way. The stallion's paint form wandered through the Battle Grounds, hoping to find Asch here. Sheiryon was dreading this; he had never battle another stallion before. He was nervous; a few minutes found him standing before the gold-bay male. The Vanner pulled his head up to look bigger, taller, instead of nervous as he really was. Shieryon nodded his head in greeting and spoke, "Hello, Asch." He was being extremely civil, and hoping that the courtesy would be returned. And in the pause between his speaking and Asch's, he would have to think up some conditions. The Vanner stallion rested on his hindlegs, ready to attack or defend himself.

asch

He doesn't have to wait long — Shieryon shows himself quickly enough. Asch pauses midstep to turn towards the Vanner, his face devoid of expression. The other was standing tall, trying to pass for confident when the golden bay knew perfectly well that he was nervous beyond repair — just as he himself was. Asch, too, subtly pulled himself up to his full height, an even 16.2 hands. He regards Shieryon coolly for a moment, then, 'Hello, Asch.'

The other stallion dips his head and greets Asch calmly and for a moment Asch is startled by his ... politeness. He had, well, he had supposed Shieryon would be at the very least stand-offish, the worst blood-thirsty. Asch was, after all, set on stealing his home from him. He knew that he wouldn't be quite so even-tempered if he were in his opponent's situation. To each their own, then.

"Shieryon," he says, dipping his head respectfully. He pauses a beat, sucking in a quiet breath and meeting his opponent's eyes. "I've no special terms or anything, save that you leave the Cavern if I win today." Another slow pause. "And believe me when I tell you, I haven't got much you would want, but name your terms if you have any."

Asch now tenses, preparing himself for a surprise attack — because the fight will now doubt ensue once Shieryon has had his piece.

shieryon

The black Vanner arched his neck, mentally preparing himself for this battle. He could understand why Asch might be surprised by how calm he is; Shieryon knew that there were plenty of lands in Kormada to claim, why fret over this one? This was, however, the first land he had ever claimed, and Shieryon wasn't about to let some other stallion come in and take over. He was glad that Asch only had one condition, and it was the only one that the Vanner had come up with, He and Asch basically had nothing to their names so far. He nodded calmly, "It sounds fair to me, Asch." And so, Shieryon reared back on his hindlegs, not going too high in case Asch should surprise him. His muscles bunched together, and he charged, flying into his first battle.

Attack 1: Shieryon

The Vanner brute chargs into the golden bay with his right shoulder, hopefully knocking the latter off balance. While close in proximity, the paint whips his head around to clamp his jaw down on any skin he can find. Shieryon jabs down with his muzzle and hits a hard place, tearing at it with his teeth. He tastes a coppery bitterness in his mouth and wonders if it's blood. His brown eyes open, and after seeing Asch's neck and mane, he guesses that he is tearing at the bay's withers. After making one final clamp-hold on the bay, Shieryon jerks his head around, trying to rip a piece of flesh from his opponent. The Vanner releases his hold and canters a few strides away, turning to face Asch again.

Attack 1: Finished

Shieryon planted his hooves on the ground and champs his reddened teeth. His eyes narrow, waiting for Asch to make a move.

Shieryon's response went as the young stallion had expected. With a nod he agreed, and Asch felt a thrill roll through him. Here we go, he thought. In a split second before his opponent charged, his mind conjured a picture of Layla, and, with a new resolve and teeth grit, he prepared himself for the first attack.

Defense One:
Shieryon half-reared, gathering himself for a charge. Asch, wide-eyed, managed to side-step just enough — his and the Vanner's shoulders collided, and he teetered precariously for a moment, but he didn't topple and regained his balance quickly as he could. As he leaned, though, teeth gripped his withers and raked at flesh. It stung, and Asch tore himself quickly away from the pain. His withers smarted painfully, but it wasn't too terrible of a cut and wasn't in a place that would particularly hinder him.

Attack One:
Asch summoned all his strength, all his courage, swiftly transitioning out of defensive and into offensive mode. His brown eyes glinted with determination, and he started forward. A fast canter took him closer to his opponent, and he decided in a moment on a plan of action. Asch approached Shieryon from the side, and he darted in with his mouth open and ready to snatch at something. Taking advantage of his slightly taller frame, Asch aims his bite for the other's ears — a painful spot if he managed to hit his mark, but in the flurry of mane and horse flesh, he can't be sure he even landed a bite. While holding on to whatever was between his teeth — surely it wasn't just air? — Asch lifted his forelegs off the ground and pawed furiously at whatever solid surface his sharp hooves could reach.

He unstuck his teeth after a good many seconds and lowered all his legs to the ground, then backed off a few yards, shaking his head lightly. It was halfway over.

The Vanner's thoughts went to Fearless and the child of theirs that had not seen yet. What kind of legacy was he leaving for that child if he lost this battle? His thoughts drove anger through him. What would his dam think of him? She would no doubt still think of him as a worthless mistake like she always had.

Defense One:
The Vanner lifted up on his legs slightly as Asch charged. The bay's head darted into a blind spot, causing Shieryon to try and angle his head to see. He felt pain on the arch of his neck, precariously close to his sensitive ears. The Vanner jerked his head, trying to get out of Asch's hold. The bay proceeded to pound his hooves into his side. The Vanner grunted, maybe a rib or two was broken, he had felt something snap beneath his skin. And Asch darted away.

Attack Two:
Shieryon chased after the golden bay, not giving himself time to recover from the attack. He came at Asch head-on, teeth bared. The Vanner bit at the stallion's nostrils, finally landing a bite-hold on the bony area above them. Shieryon kicked at the bay's chest and right shoulder with her fore-hooves, considering the angle he was at. He couldn't tell if there had been a snap or not. The Vanner jerked his head back and forth, trying to tear skin, or flesh, away. By accident, his hold slipped then closed on a nostril. The Vanner yanked back, perhaps damaging the stallion's crest or the hinge beneath his neck, maybe tearing his nostril away.

Shieryon released his hold and took a few steps back, teeth bared and ears pinned. Taking assessment of his wounds, he could feel the pain on his crest throbbing. He felt a little warmth on neck; Asch had broken skin, but hopefully it wasn't much. He shifted his weight from his front left to front right. It twinged bit to go right, probably because of his ribs and shoulder. He remained ready for Asch to come at him again.

asch

Defense Two:
Asch tried to move off as quickly as he could, fearing swift retaliation on Shieryon's part — and he was right to fear so. Just as Asch turned his head to take in the damage he had done to his opponent, a mass of black and white flew at his face. So concentrated on getting away, the golden bay hadn't realized that the Vanner was pratically right on top of him.

Teeth snapped dangerously close to the bridge of his nose, and then they hit their mark — but just barely. Shieryon's teeth pinched his skin, but they didn't manage to clamp around the bone, thank the gods. Asch jerked his head sideways, leaving behind a sizeable patch of skin behind as he did so. It was a shallow injury, but it's area was fairly large and it would be burning and bleeding for a while.

Asch gathered his legs and attempted to reverse, and just as he was almost out of striking distance, the opposing stallion's hooves landed squarely on his chest. With a big "Oof!" his breath left his lungs and he stumbled back several feet. He could already feel a bruise blossoming on his skin, but his bones didn't feel quite broken. He would feel that one for ages, at any rate.

Attack Two:
He didn't like having to catch his breath before attacking, because then Shieryon would have time to do the same, but it was necessary. All the air had been knocked clear out of his lungs. He recovered as quick as he could, and, still panting lightly, threw himself into his second and final attack.

Asch didn't trust himself to use his teeth again, not with the risk of bumping his fresh wound against anything and harming it further. He chose his tactics at full tilt, approaching Shieryon with his fury at an all-time high, his expression reminiscent of one of mother's signature scowls. Asch, coming up on the black and white stallion, slowed as quick as he could manage and swung around with his front feet planted, hopefully slamming his hindquarters into the ribs he had attempted to pummel in his last attack. With a quick step forward, his threw his hind legs into the air with great force and kicked at whatever solid target he could manage to collide with. Asch hoped to hit either Shieryon's ribs again, or the unprotected area just behind them.

His hooves came back down to solid earth (possibly the only thing they actually hit). Asch moved off a few yards and spun round. Blood seeping from the bridge of nose and down over his lips, he offered a nod and grim, blood encrusted smile to Shieryon. "Good luck," he murmurs, sportsman-like. Now to await the judging, the deciding of their fates.

Defense Two: When Asch stopped to catch his breath, so did the Vanner stallion. The golden bay swung his hindquarters into side of the Vanner. The air was knocked from the Vanner's lungs, and he tried backing away from the other stallion as the bay began to kick out. The bay managed to land a few kicks into Shieryon's side. The stallion groaned loudly, resisting the urge to nurse his no-doubt broken ribs.

He nodded curtly to Asch, who murmured a wish of luck to him. It would be some time before the Vanner tried getting into a battle again? Where would his battle leave him and his soon-to-be family? Hopefully, this would end well for the Vanner.

First Attacks

Riddy & Asch
Comments: good detail, realistic attack, though rather a double attack by going for Shieryon’s ears then striking out also.
Originality: 3/5
Damage Done: 3/5
Realism: 5/5
Total: 11/15

Sen & Shieryon
Comments: good detail, realistic attack, though rather a double attack in the ramming of the shoulder and trying to rip skin off Asch’s back. plus, there is a tad of mild powerplaying in suggesting that Shieryon did, in fact, hit something hard and rip away at it.
Originality: 2/5
Damage Done: 3/5
Realism: 3/5
Total: 10/15

First Defenses

Riddy & Asch
Comments: would’ve expected a bit more attention to Asch’s shoulder being rammed rather than the back wound, but a reasonable and fair defense.
Originality: 5/5
Damage Taken: 2/5
Realism: 4/5
Total: 11/15

Sen & Shieryon
Comments: excellent damage taken from the pounding; don’t mind that there wasn’t much from the bite seeing as the defense was fair and logical. would’ve liked to hear the result of said ‘pain in the neck’ though.
Originality: 5/5
Damage Taken: 4/5
Realism: 5/5
Total: 14/15

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Second Attacks

Riddy & Asch
Comments: excellent originality, good move on the swing to add insult to previous injury; in reality could have caused major internal damage. unfortunately, yet another double attack by swinging and then kicking.
Originality: 5/5
Damage Done: 5/5
Realism: 5/5
Total: 15/15

Sen & Shieryon
Comments: good detail, unfortunately yet another double attack with the striking out and the biting of Asch’s nose, though an excellent effort at causing damage. headed in the right direction.
Originality: 4/5
Damage Done: 3/5
Realism: 4/5
Total: 11/15

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Second Defenses

Riddy & Asch
Comments: good detail, good damage taken, a fair defense. pretty sure my eyes watered for Asch on this one, poor guy! would’ve liked to hear how a loss of breath and ‘blossoming bruise’ affected him more.
Originality: 4/5
Damage Taken: 4/5
Realism: 4/5
Total: 12/15

Sen & Shieryon
Comments: excellent damage taken, kudos.
Originality: 5/5

Grammar / Punctuation / Spelling: 3/5

The winner is RIDDY & ASCH by a very narrow one point. It was only the tad of powerplaying which shifted the battle one way or the other.

this scoring setup was taken from kimmys if anyone was wondering.
