CAEL The dusky paint stallion enters the Battlegrounds at a slow march. He wasted no energy getting here; he had three days to do so, and with a battle coming up, he wanted to be in his prime. He may have the advantage of youth over Jethroh, but that gave the other the advantage of experience. The sickly-sweet smell of death and decay assaults Cael's nostrils, and his face wrinkles in disgust. The farther in he ventures, the stronger the scent becomes. But Cael wants to find the prime location for this battle to happen, and so he risks his sense of smell for another advantage in the battle. He ends up choosing a large, open area and settles there, waiting for his opponent. As he does, he goes over everything he's ever learned in mock-battles with Alex or Fang or even Iggy in his mind. Hopefully, he'll have a chance. All his dreams are pinned on this battle, and he wants nothing more than to win this land and live with a small band of loyal, happy mares. Cael imagines this vision, and as he waits, his determination to win becomes even stronger; because of this thought, he knows he will succeed. It's for his future. |

The large draft stallion hung onto Cael’s scent as he strode to the battle grounds. It was his first battle in Kormada and it was probably not going to be his last. He swiftly encountered the border to the Grounds, and he paused inside it. The scent he was following seemed to reach well inside the territory. Narrowing his eyes, he moved his stout legs forward to meet his fate. He finally came upon the stallion’s scent strongly, and spotted him soon after. Before moving to meet his opponent, he took note of the large expanse of bare land. The acrid smell of blood writhed about his nostrils, making him twist his face. He could tell by the look of disgust on the opponent’s face he thought the same. Finally, he strode forward to meet Cael head on. ATTACK ONE Jethroh gracefully moved forward, and it was not long before the paint stud was at a dead run. He looked like a juggernaut, moving forward and seemingly unstoppable towards the opposing stallion. He started fading to the right, then at the last moment veered sharply to the left, clipping Cael’s shoulder with his hip. He slid to a stop at the draft’s barrel. He extended his heavy boned leg and hoof to swiftly crush down on the hind ankle in hopes of crippling or severely injuring the stallion. Adrenaline pumped in his ears, making it impossible to tell if that was tearing flesh or breaking bones. He could only hear roaring in his ears. Hardly a few seconds went by before his small, yet hopefully fruitful attack was over. Since Cael was also of draft heritage, it would be hard to break his ankle. Jethroh had put a lot of muscle and weight on his attack, however. He was also a draft, and they were known for their brute force. Jethroh immediately went forward, rounding to face his opponent. CAEL The overwhelming stench and the thoughts that fill the young stallion’s mind make the wait seem much longer than it actually is. For him, it seems like an eternity passes before Jethroh arrives. In reality, Cael assumes it must have just been a few hours at the most, because if the draft stud was able to pick out an unfamiliar scent from the cacophony that assaulted one’s nose the second they entered this land, then Cael’s scent must not have been very old at all. But none of that mattered now, because as Cael stood waiting, he had decided on how his attacks were going to go; little does the colt know that, in a battle, not everything goes exactly as planned. His opponent enters across the field from him, and he begins to slowly move forward. Cael raises his head, neck curling protectively across his vulnerable jugular. While the paint colt takes the time to do this, his inquisitive brown eyes never once leave his opponent, so he is prepared when the other male suddenly jolts into a run. DEFENSE 1 As Jethroh runs at him, he is moving to the right, yet Cael doesn’t brace his body one way or the other. He reasons that if he stands in the middle, he’ll have farther to fall and have more time to correct himself on both sides. It turns out that his move is smart; not for the reason he was thinking, but that doesn’t lessen the usefulness of standing in the middle rather than leaning with Jethroh as he had almost done. The stallion is almost past Cael and the dusky paint is wondering what kind of attack that was when suddenly the powerful hip of the draft he is fighting slams into his shoulder. All of Cael’s breath is knocked from his body, and he is moved a few inches to the side, his feet scuttling quickly and fighting not to get tangled up. He manages to keep his legs, and in all his side-stepping to keep his balance he avoided almost all of the blow Jethroh delivered to his ankle. It struck his pastern, and the skin was broken. Considering the fact that he was still standing Cael assumed no bones were shattered, but he knew the wound would be sore. It was in a vital location, and in a few weeks once the injury began to swell, he imagined that he’d have trouble for a while. Not to mention the blood slowly oozing from the wound was distracting. He wrinkled his nose, uncomfortable with the sensation. He lifted his back leg once and shook it, and then settled it back down; the wound wasn’t so bad he wouldn’t be able to continue his battle, and that was all that mattered. ATTACK 1 Cael doesn’t want to have to run; it seems like such a generic start to an attack. As the colt muses over what else he could even possibly do, he considers the weak points of an equine’s anatomy. The canon bone, if struck with enough force is incapacitating. If he comes from behind and moves to dislocate the knee of his opponent, that could also work. The face and skull are always weak points, also. Eyes, ears, the mouth and nostrils; everything on the skull is weak, fleshy and bleeds profusely. Cael can’t see a better attack than this one, and so he moves forward. At first, his steps are slow, but as he approaches Jethroh he forces his body into a canter. At the last instant, when he is close enough to Jethroh to stretch his muzzle and touch him, Cael slams to a stop. He slides perhaps an inch forward, his body fighting with gravity. In an instant, he lunges up, placing his significant weight back upon his hind legs. His ankle throbs, and yet he ignores it. As he rises to his full 17 hh, he reaches for as much flesh or skin he can grab to help him on his way up. His goal is that this will help to steady him; not that he plans to remain in the air with his soft underbelly revealed for long, but he needs the help to stay balanced with his injured ankle threatening to give out on him. Once he is up, he shakes his head once before letting go of whatever (if any) flesh he may have grabbed and then he is loosing a call of triumph, before he suddenly drops back down, slamming all of his weight onto his front hooves, making a point to drag his hooves as close to Jethroh’s sensitive ears and delicate skull, as possible. The single, flowing motion takes no more than a few seconds and so Cael is obviously second-guessing himself. He wasn’t sure if, in the instant that his hooves flew down through the air he actually made contact with anything before his weight thudded into the ground. But he has no more time to ponder this; he needs to move away from Jethroh. Spinning elegantly, Cael retreats to an acceptable distance and awaits retaliation. If everything were to go perfectly, his ragged hooves would have crushed the draft stallion’s skull, and this battle would be over completely. If the outcome was the optimum, like he assumed it wasn’t, he hoped that his blow to Jethroh’s head would have caused a concussion, or damaged his brain in enough ways that the stallion had trouble with his last attack. Even if that did not happen, Cael was hoping for at least a gash to be opened upon the stallion’s cranium; the bleeding, it severe enough, could impair his vision. With his neck arched to protect his windpipe, Cael stands at the opposite edge of the battlefield, carefully watching Jethroh. Next time, he will be prepared when the other male makes his move. Cael widens his stance a bit, and lowers his body, settling into a defensive crouch, ready to receive anything that the draft has to offer. WORD COUNT: 1,001 ATTACKS LEFT: 1 OOC COMMENTS: Bah. I hate battles; I can never come up with new attacks. |

As Jethroh pivoted on his hind foot to spin and face his opponent, he was unsure whether he should be surprised or not to find that Cael wasn’t immediately on his tail to attack him. In fact, the younger stallion sat a moment to think about his plan. Jethroh glanced briefly to Cael’s ankle, noting the torn flesh with a slight hint of satisfaction. Nothing seemed to be broken, and Jethroh was sure that adrenaline and the fact the wound wasn’t too severe would probably not affect the overall movement of Cael. He hoped it would cause him enough discomfort later in the battle to aid in trying to off balance him for another attack. For now, he would keep his small triumph in check; the tide of battle could easily turn for the worst. He did not want to jinx anything, even though he wasn’t all that superstitious like some other horses here. DEFENSE ONE Jethroh instantaneously noticed when Cael started towards him. He squared himself, making sure to not lock his legs. He came at Jethroh at a run, but just short of slamming forcefully into him, slid to a stop. Jethroh made the mistake of darting to the left when he should have gone straight back. He felt teeth grip his forelock on his poll, then slip to the sensitive skin under his ear. It ripped profoundly, and Jethroh clenched his jaws forcefully. A hoof slashed his upper neck and another caught his forehead. He twisted his head and the hoof sliced painfully down to his muzzle. Jethroh then threw himself into reverse and got away from the vicious attack. Blood trickled down into his left eye, and he took a few moments to blink it all out. He rubbed his eye on his leg and removed any blood that might come into his eye again. He swung around to face Cael again. He sat a moment to think. He tried to not go for the whole facial area as that was expected, and most horses seemed to have a pretty good idea how to avoid serious injury. Jethroh started to prowl forward, his gait smooth and graceful for a stallion. Yes, he had a plan. It did not involve ATTACK TWO Jethroh moved forward somewhat slower than before. Since he was not as fast and enduring as a Thoroughbred, he had spent a lot of energy executing the battle attack and defense on Cael. Considering he was not as fresh as before, he would move a little slower and save himself some energy. He finally reached the stallion, he did not try to pull off a feint attack; he went straight to his objective. He lunged forward on Cael’s left side (Jethroh’s right, as they are facing the opposite direction), hardly any space was between him and Cael. He hooked his left front leg around Cael’s right hind leg, and at the same time grabbing at the tender hock where the tendon was. He wrenched his face sideways, and then inward in hopes of pushing Cael’s left hind leg towards the other hind leg. He pulled his hooked leg back, in hopes of making him fall backwards/sideways. He felt what he believed the other stallion sink away from him (or did Jethroh pull move backwards?). Jethroh let go and accidentally clipped against Cael’s hind end as he retreated around the back end, however the most it would do was probably make his hindquarters fall, as intended. He swiftly moved forward and straight, then turning to face Cael once more. Jethroh panted slightly as he watched the opposing horse to see what his next move would be. Thankfully, the battle was almost over. Jethroh braced himself for the next attack, just short of mimicking Cael's earlier crouch. His head was level with his withers, and he arched his thick neck to protect his only airway. Edited by Fearless, Jan 9 2011, 09:12 PM.

CAEL Cael’s preparation for this next attack, it seemed, was completely useless. In the end, experience was necessary when it came to battles. If the youthful stallion had known his challenger would be so much more adept than him, he would have thought twice before trying to take his land from him. Before Jethroh sets out on his next attack, Cael notices his wounds with satisfaction. While the stallion he is fighting is not incapacitated, his face and ear are bleeding. With any luck, the blood will run into his eyes and interrupt future movement. As Cael is examining his opponent’s injuries, he lifts his ankle tenderly before settingly down again. It is finally beginning to hurt as he expected it to; the bleeding hasn’t stopped, and now his shoulder is aching something fierce. He knows he’ll have a large bruise there for a few weeks; all he can be glad about is that the massive weight of Jethroh didn’t shatter his scapula, or pop his shoulder out of its socket. DEFENSE 2 His quiet study of injuries has brought him up to Jethroh’s next movement, and now the stallion is approaching slower than last time. This immediately sets off alarms in Cael’s instinctual, battle ready mind. He knows the stallion is going to try something tricky, and he needs to be ready for it. There will be no simple body-slams or biting this time. Something more dangerous is coming. Just as he tells himself to be aware, Jethroh drops down behind him, on his left side, and suddenly Cael’s back legs are being forced together. He squeals in outrage and defiance as he falls to the ground. The fall came from nowhere, and as his significant weight crashes to the ground, his front legs crash heavily to the gravel below him. He can feel multiple little cuts upon his knees, and the impact is so jarring, he feels it all the way to his teeth. He feels a pressure at his hock, by the tendon, and so he drops to his side, fighting what he assumes are the teeth of Jethroh. There is a searing pain in one of his sensitive tendons, but he doesn’t spare it a glance because he suddenly has an idea of how he can recover from this brutal attack. It will work, but he has precious few seconds to execute the maneuver. It has to be done while Jethroh is still above him. ATTACK 2 He is down lying on the ground and Jethroh is up above him; Cael pulls his head in, protecting his skull, neck and jugular, before he tenses all his muscles in preparation to move. With a push, Cael propels himself a bit further, face contorting in pain at the few scrapes along his already-injured shoulder. Using the momentum from his push, and the fact that he had already dropped to his side, he rolls onto his back with his legs pointing straight up into the air. At this point, Cael is underneath Jethroh; not the best place to be, for a well-placed step could end his life, but he knows what he is doing. Extending his powerful legs as far as they can go, Cael kicks and drags back and forth, moving his jagged, sharp hooves all across whatever he can reach. His eyes are squeezed close in concentration, so he isn’t sure if he hits anything, but after a few moments of kicks, Cael moves to stand up. He doesn’t rise yet; first, he flops back down onto his side and then using the muscles in his shoulder he pushes himself off of the ground, rising as any equine who laid down to sleep would. He rises in an instant, and then scrambles backward, moving out of the way of any more of Jethroh’s retaliation. It is not until afterward that he realizes that this could be a second part of his attack; hopefully, for Jethroh’s sake, he moved out of the way in time. Other wise, he would have been lifted up by Cael rising and then dropped back down onto the ground. But now, Cael puts that out of his mind and moves back, limping slightly due to his hind leg. The injured tendon is tight and will give him issues, but he should be able to recover from it. His knees are bruised and cut, but besides swelling and bleeding they will be fine. Knowing the battle is done he nods once to Jethroh and then allows himself to relax. It was a good battle, and all that can be done now is awaiting the judgment. WORD COUNT: 766 ATTACKS LEFT: 0 OOC COMMENTS: Not nearly as good as the last one. =/ Well done Fear! Thank’s for a good battle! Edited by Magnanimous, Jan 10 2011, 06:51 PM.

Ooc;; Small recap before the Defense, don’t get confused! Jethroh considered Cael’s triumphant features before he set off after the stallion for his next move. He could almost hear the gears work in the young stallion’s mind as to how Jethroh could be affected by this in the near future. You have some triumph, young one, he thought. For these wounds will certainly bother me and weaken me for a while... He also had reason to be triumphant, however. The younger stallion was sore on his ankle and would be for a while. Not to mention his shoulder must be irritating him greatly by now, even though Jethroh hadn’t planned to clip him. It was a good move on his part, though, because it offset Cael’s balance when he had played out his battle attack. Jethroh was concerned for the awareness Cael showed as he started forward. He seemed confused and even more suspicious when he didn’t come as quickly as before. This set Jethroh’s mind a little on the disdainful side; the more aware an opponent was, the more liable they were to evade heavy damage. Jethroh then enacted his battle attack. The horse sank under him as he planned, but Jethroh was in danger of getting his legs tangled with Cael’s. He tried to stay clear for the most part; however he was still in very close physical quarters. He hears the stallion scream over the roar in his ears, grunting in victory. It is not long before the stallion comes up with his next attack, however. DEFENSE TWO Jethroh moves to go around the young stud, but the victory singing in his mind is cut short much too soon. Searing pain starts at his shoulder, and he is wild anger when he realizes that time seemed to freeze as he tries to move forward. The pain went from his shoulder all the way to his flank, where the vicious hoof tears a jagged hole in the tender regions. It finally ends, however time suddenly came crashing back down on Jethroh as he sinks to his knees, the assault of the hooves ripping his flesh along his large barrel. Jethroh hardly remembers forcing himself to his knees; however a last lash of the hooves caught him painfully on the coronet. His feathers were cut off as a deep gash was placed at his pastern. The draft finally manages to jerk away from Cael. He is hardly any distance away when Cael is up on his feet, smashing into Jethroh’s flank. Pain blossomed at the tear where sweat and blood was unfavorably rubbed in, and Jethroh wastes no time in limping away at an awkward lope. He wheels to face Cael. He turned to him, but instead of cautiously watching the young stud, he examines his wounds. His face is torn; he has numerous rips along his barrel; that long, painful, deep gash along his side starting at his shoulder to his sensitive flank; and the agonizing cut at his pastern. Yes, this was a nasty fight indeed; however he did not show misgivings for Cael. It was a fair fight, and these wounds were to be expected. He shook himself, only to be darkly amused that he merely caused himself more pain. He was glad he wasn’t the only one who received macabre and grievous wounds. After a while, Jethroh’s heavy panting receded and his respiratory was nearly back to normal. It was shame his body wouldn’t heal near as fast as he regained his breath. Jethroh looked at Cael. You fought well, better than I had hoped. He said with a crooked grin. Now that the battle was over, Jethroh was pretty much returned to his friendly self. He hoped the other stallion wouldn’t be too hostile. After all, he did receive pretty gruesome wounds that, like Jethroh’s, would take time to heal. |

First Attacks FEARLESS & JETHROH Comments: Again, dearie, you need to watch how you say things. You're much better about not saying how much damage you're doing, but you're not really giving Magnanimous the chance to say whether or not Jethroh made contact. For example, "clipping Cael’s shoulder with his hip" could have been fixed by changing it to read "attempting to clip Cael's shoulder with his hip." Likewise for the part about swiftly crushing down on the ankle. However, the attack was VERY CLEAR, kudos! Originality: 3/5 Damage Done: 1/5 Realism: 4/5 -5 for powerplaying Total: 8/15 MAGNANIMOUS & CAEL Comments: I read this as, crazy flailing toward the stallion in front of him with no real target, however he seemed to have hit his mark. Originality: 3/5 Damage Done: 4/5 Realism: 3/5 Total: 10/15 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ First Defenses FEARLESS & JETHROH Comments: I like how you made it so Jethroh makes mistakes as well. Originality: 3/5 Damage Taken: 3/5 Realism: 4/5 Total: 10/15 MAGNANIMOUS & CAEL Comments: I like the way you used Jethroh clipping his shoulder to help avoid the next attack. Originality: 4/5 Damage Taken: 1/5 Realism: 3/5 Total: 8/15 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Second Attacks FEARLESS & JETHROH Comments: Again, watch your wording. Just add something that shows that you were intending to make contact but give the other person room for an avoidance. Example: "perhaps accidentally clipping against Cael’s hind end." However, this part is a good example of what I was talking about and it was done well: "He felt what he believed the other stallion sink away from him (or did Jethroh pull move backwards?)." It took me a moment to figure this out, this attack doesn't seem realistic but it actually is. xD Originality: 4/5 Damage Done: 2/5 Realism: 5/5 I didn't take anything off here because you also had a good example. <3 Total: 11/15 MAGNANIMOUS & CAEL Comments: The positioning is a little wonky - Jethroh was moving away, however you made contact in a vulnerable spot. Originality: 4/5 Damage Done: 4/5 Realism: 2/5 Total: 10/15 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Second Defenses FEARLESS & JETHROH Comments: Realistic defense. =] Originality: 2/5 Damage Taken: 4/5 Realism: 4/5 Total: 10/15 MAGNANIMOUS & CAEL Comments: Realistic, and like Fearless you allowed your horse to be injured/falliable. Hooray! Originality: 3/5 Damage Taken: 2/5 Realism: 4/5 Total: 9/15 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ RESULTS FEARLESS & JETHROH Comments: Overall much better than the last one, just watch how you word things and make sure everyone has a fair chance to decide what happens to their characters. Grammar / Punctuation / Spelling: 5/5 Total: 39/65 MAGNANIMOUS & CAEL Comments: Well done. Cael's inexperience seemed to serve him well in this battle, the little bugger kept getting lucky. Well written posts though.Grammar / Punctuation / Spelling: 5/5 Total: 42/65 The winner is CAEL |
