"Right 2nd Lieutenant Parker, you take 2nd Platoon and hook round left ready to assault the town from the North on my signal. We'll take out the machine gun team in the sangar on the outskirts and then we'll both assault at the same time. You got that?" "Got it," said Parker, running off to his team who followed him. Henderson relayed the message to the snipers who had the machine gun team in their sights, who hadn't opened fire. They probably were worried it might be reinforcements and so they were going to wait until they could identify who it was. "Sierra One and Two you are clear to take out MG nest. Over." "Roger that Charlie Three Zero, taking the shot." Two shots rang out. 1-3: The shots miss and the machine gunners now have a target and open up with a GPMG. Soldiers in the town come out of the buildings to join the fight. 4-7: The shots kill the gunner but miss the loader, who takes up the GPMG and starts firing. No one comes out from the town. 8-10: Shots are accurate and take out both. No enemies come out the town. You rolled a: 1! |

There was a few seconds of silence as the helicopter moved off. As it reached the bay shots were fired at it from the buildings in Grytviken, a few seconds later all hell broke loose. Shots slammed down from the hills to their North East and the town to their North. Lee and 1st Platoon quickly took cover and laid down a base of fire on the town and the hill-top positions. 2nd Platoon under command of Lt.Craigs moved off to the West to try and flank the Argies on the hill. The sound of gunfire was deafening as the GMPG's started to lay down the fire. Lee took out his binoculars. He counted about 10 Argies up on the hills in 2 firing positions. 2 Machine Guns were giving 2nd Platoon a hard time several hundred meters to his right. If the Pathfinders were right, that left another 25 or so in the town. "Keep it up!!" screamed Lee 2nd Platoon started their advance towards the hill top positions. 1-3= They become pinned down and take 5 casualties 4-7= They make steady progress towards the positions but suffer 3 casualties 8-10= They storm the first position suffering 2 casualties. Lee watched 2nd Platoon move their way forward with text-book fire and maneuver tactics. They were quickly within meters of the MG nest. He watched several grenades go off amongst the Argies manning the first position and Craig and his men were soon on top of them. Then he heard the cries over the radio: "Man down!!!" "Shit" muttered Lee, but there was no time for that now. 1st Platoon were coming under increasingly fierce fire from the town. It was time to move. He ordered 2 sections to advance to the marsh area to his North East where they would be more in cover. Meanwhile the GMPG's continued to lay down covering fire. He sprinted across the open ground before diving into a ditch full of freezing cold muddy, water. He looked around and heard one more cry of man down. He saw a wounded soldier being dragged into a ditch a few meters away. The town was now just 50 meters away and the fire from both sides was intense. They wouldn't be able to move until 2nd Platoon had the drop on the town from the West. |

"Shit. Charlie Three Zero, not hits. I repeat no hits. Over." "Roger that, I can fucking see that," growled Henderson. "Corporal Smith take 1 Section and lay down covering fire. Corporal Rogers take 2 Section and advance straight on pepper-potting. I'll take 3 Section, pop smoke and hook right. Over and out." He turned to his section. "3 Section pop smoke we're hooking right," he shouted, the order being relayed as 1 and 2 section began laying down fire. Smoke grenades got thrown straight ahead and 3 Section began running right, hoping to flank the MG's at a 45 degree angle. 1-3: The covering fire works poorly and the MG gunner switches to 3 Section. 2 Casualties and the soldiers from the town are now in range to fire. 4-7: The covering fire works well and the MG gunner can only get off small bursts at 2 section. No casualties but the soldiers from the town begin firing on 3 section. 8-10: Covering fire works to perfection and the MG team are supressed, silencing the gun. 3 Section are now in an effective flanking position. No casualties and the soldiers from the town are now hesitant to advance. You rolled a: 7! |

3 Section are in position but are pinned down by the soldiers from the town. The MG is supressed allowing 2 Section to advance. "Shit we're pinned down. Charlie Two Zero, this is Three Zero. You are green to go advance from the north and try and silence that machine gun. Over." 1-3: 2nd Platoon advances but they get bogged down by the unhospitable terrain. 3 section takes 2 casualties and 2 Section takes 3. MG Nest begins firing rapidly again. 4-7: 2nd Platoon make it to the edge of the town and eliminate the MG nest, allowing 3rd Platoon to concentrate all their fire on the 13 other soldiers. 3 Section takes 2 Casualties. 8-10: 2nd Platoon makes it into the town, eliminates the MG nest and begins pouring fire on the other soldiers. 2 Section gets with 100 yards of the town and 3 Section can continue flanking right while 1 Section provides fire support. Still no casualties Henderson thought, relieved at the success so far. The MG nest had been silenced and now 2nd Platoon had taken positions on the town, trapping the other soldiers in a textbook left flank. If 3 Section could get right to the south of the position, they'd have the enemy forces trapped in the bull's horns. "C'mon 3 Section, we're almost there. More smoke then move again." 1-3: The enemy soldiers take no losses and dig in, putting down effective fire on 3rd Platoon while 2nd have no line of fire. 2 Section takes 5 casualties and halts its advance, letting the enemy concentrate on the flanking 3 section. 4-7: The enemy soldiers take 2 losses but retreat and consolidate in the large L shaped building in the town. 2 Section takes 2 casualties but 3 section completes its flanking manouver. 8-10: The enemy soldiers take 5 losses and are stuck where they are. They are surrounded on 3 sides and 2 Platoon closes in, while 3 section takes positions in the south. 1 and 2 section advance now the pressure has been taken off them. You rolled a: 4! |

Things went badly for 2nd Platoons assault on the next MG nest. 2 more casualties were suffered making 4 for 2nd and 1 for 1st. With the hill-positions completely engaged it was time for 1st to move in. They moved forward, slowly making their way towards the buildings with overwhelming covering fire from the GMPG's, as well as some of 2nd Platoons men from the hill top who had taken control of one of the Argie machine-guns. Lee watched as one section moved into the first building, using flash-bangs rather then grenades so as not to kill any civilians. Odds: Room safely cleared Evens: Room cleared and another casualty taken You rolled a: 2! |

The assault was going as planned until Henderson heard the fatal words of the radio. "Charlie Three Zero, this is Three Two. Casualties, wait out." "What's their status Three Two? Over." "Shit sir, they're both down. Marine Clemson and Marine Stevenson are KIA. I repeat KIA. Over." "Rogers calm down. Continue your assault. Do you copy? Over." "Fuck... Ok Sir. Over and Out." 3 Section was now at a right angle to the building the Argies were now holding up in. "Charlie Two Zero, this is Three Zero. We'll try and get behind them. You keep putting down fire onto that building and we'll try and suprise them. Do you copy? over." "I hear you Three Zero. Don't worry we'll put down such a shit storm of lead they won't be able to move. Over." "Roger that." 1-3: The Argies in the building spot 3 section trying get behind them and begin firing out of the South facing windows. Stopping them in their tracks and causing a casualty 4-7: The Argies don't spot 3 section but none of the fire from 2nd Platoon inflicts casualties. They hunker down in the building only firing sporadic bursts out the windows. 8-10: The Argies don't spot 3 section and an I-LAW rocket from 2nd Platoon blows a whole in the wall killing 3 argies, leaving 8 left. 3 Section get behind the building not noticed and prepare to assault. Major Vaughn, 22nd SAS HMS Albion Command centre. Roger that Sunray. Dagger One Alpha is reporting heavy fire in kill box One Charlie Zero. Incoming!!!! Take Cov.................................................... Dagger One Alpha respond. Repeat. Dagger One Alpha respond. Shit. This is Dagger One to all Daggers. We've lost contact with Dagger One Alpha. Can anyone make visual contact. Vaughn listened to the vox chatter with a grim face. It appeared that the 'conscripts' were putting up fierce resistance. It wouldn't be the first time Intelligence got something wrong. The men in the command centre were considering Argie spec ops on the island of South Georgia. Vaughn prayed. He prayed for the success of the mission. He prayed for his men. But most of all. He prayed for the young men dying in South Georgia. |
