Major Foley was wandering around Delta Companies Barracks after having inspected the new equipment. The US Army always got to enjoy the new toys, and as a front line unit in a potential hotspot, this was even more true. It had its good points and bad points- the bad point being they were the test dummies, and if this equipment went wrong it would cost them lives. The good point being if it worked right, they would get to wreak some destruction on whoever was stupid enough to take them on.

They were equipped with the new M16A2 Assault Rifle, not all that much different from the M16 he had used in Vietnam 15 years previous at the tender age of 18. It brought back a flood of memories- some of which he would rather forget.

On top of this, they got the new Squad Automatic Weapon called the M249 SAW. They had been told it was more reliable and accurate then the trusty M60, but it didn't pack the same punch.

Finally, they had the new Humvee's. Foley was very excited about these new toys. Before now, they had been driving around in shoddy-little jeeps, vulnerable to just about everything. But this Humvee was big, fast, versatile and not nearly as flimsy. He had already taken a few out for a spin and he loved every second of it. However, he wasn't under any doubts that the Russian's would have tanks, IFV's, APC's, Missiles, Rockets and a whole load of other stuff that could turn one into a heap of molten metal within the blink of an eye. But they were light infantry, if he had wanted to mess around with tanks he would have joined the armoured.

He retired to his room and thought about his country home outside Richmond, Virginia. He was due a second child soon, and his boy would reach 4 years in 2 months time. He hoped he would back for then, but he wasn't counting on anything. The Ruskies looked like they were serious this time.

"OH FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!"
Andersen could hear Søren curse over and over again as he tried for the 5th time.
"I swear, if i dont get some oil, im gonna be trapped in this piece of crap!"
He had been trying to open the driver hatch for the last 10 minutes, unsucessful so far.

King had been suffering from problems ever since they entered the town.
Lieutenant Oswald, commander of 2nd Platoon, was starting to spread rumours among the officers of how the town was cursed. Andersend had taken him in for a chat a couple of times, but the large Jute was enjoying himself too much, in scaring the reservists he commanded. After another profanity from Søren, Andersen decided to do something.

"Right im gonna go get that oil for you. Might as weel be a good opportunity to introduce myself to some of the others".

Karsten appeared out of the top hatch: "From the fly-boys sir?"
"No, wouldnt trust them with something important like my Tank. Ill go talk to the yanks, see if we can work out a deal for some of the lubes they use on their vehicles. Wish me luck boys, i might go talk to flyboys after that".

And with that, Andersen jumped down from the hull of his machine, and walked towards the buildings that quartered Delta Company

The blades of the chopper spilt the light making it flash in Casey's eyes he signalled over to one of the other teams in the second chopper to imply 1 minute to drop the radios were buzzing Nick had his weapon secured and ready. The Pilot called 30 seconds and Nick lowered his goggles ready to pile out. 10 seconds Nick was on the side of the chopper as soon as the skids hit the dirt he would jump out he counted in his head,

3...
2...
1... Nick jumped out of the chopper weapon in hand the down blast threw up dust and blocked his view this would last a few seconds until the chopper spooled down and the pilot turned off the engine, Nick waited for the rest of his crew to dismount it was oddly cold air for April he shivered and walked down the runway he saw Fox Squadron Cobra’s and some of the crew he put his hand up to wave then continued on down the runway.

Colonel Christopher English
17th NATO Battlegroup
Alfeld, West Germany

-------------------------------------------------------

Colonel English stepped out of the Black Hawk helicopter and into the field outside Alfeld, shortly followed by his aide Captain Alex Thompson. They waved to the pilot who nodded and started to take-off once more heading back towards the airbase from where it had brought the commander of this Battlegroup to the frontline. Christopher English was an experienced commander in the British Army, having served in the Falklands with the Parachute Regiment and had been only a Captain when he had fought in the famous Battle of Goose Green. A man in his mid-forties, English was the sort of man who relished going on expeditions to exotic places, climbing mountains and crossing deserts. Yet nothing had terrified him more before in his life than the prospect of the Soviet invasion, yet while he was terrified he was also resolute in the belief that he would not let the Russian Bear take Europe and in his opinion that started right here in Alfeld, with his Battlegroup.

"Sir, here are the latest intelligence reports from the satellites. They confirm what the spooks said; the Russians are mustering for an attack against Alfeld," Captain Thompson stated grimly, as they walked into the HQ which was based in the town hall in Alfeld.

"How soon will they be ready to attack in full strength?"

"That's the good news, they won't be able to attack in battalion strength for a few days but we are suspecting that they will send a couple of armored and mechanized companies our way to test our defence," he replied more optimisticly. "We expect them some time tonight or tomorrow."

English sat down behind his desk and studied the pictures of the enemy formations, taken a few hours earlier by a RORSAT that had passed over Europe. He realised that his men would be fighting sooner than he thought and he had even less time to brief them and try to gain as many assets as he could before the enemy reached Alfeld. He turned to his Captain who was standing behind him examining the Area of Operation Map, placing a marker where the new Soviet forces had been sighted in a small village not far from Alfeld.

"Captain, Get the new area of operation map copied for all the company commanders and I'll have it sent out once I finish writing this operation brief for them," the Colonel ordered.

"Right away sir," Thompson nodded and walked off.

English turned back to his desk and typed up the operational brief for the commanders. Once it was finished he read it thoroughly all the way through:

To the Company Commanders of the 19th NATO Battlegroup,

As you all know, the forces of the Soviet Union are rapidly advancing into West Germany and even as you read this they are drawing ever closer to us. The big red dog is growling in our backyard gentlemen and do not worry, we are well within our rights to go out and shoot it. Men we are the finest troops in the whole of NATO and the Soviets can send as many troops as they want; it won't matter how many they send, because every time they do: we will defeat them! Our time is coming men, and much sooner than you think.

A few hours ago a RORSAT captured pictures of Russian forces near the village of Adenstedt, which is about 7km East from here and we have reports that the enemy are preparing for an assault on Alfeld. The current strength of their force in Adenstedt is around the size of a Battalion, so they won't yet launch their full assault until they get more reinforcements. However, we do believe they will send out around half that battalion to test our defences and try to wear us down, some time between tonight and tomorrow. Your job men is to defend this town with everything you have.

Now while it will be up for you and your fellow commanders to decide how exactly you will repel this puny assault, but I will offer some advice and a few orders alongside. My advice would be that the Greek Special Forces head out further West along the road, to ambush the attacking force as they travel along the narrow road where they will be restricted movement. Then I would have Charlie Company's tanks start off in pre-dug tank ditches just outside the town to begin an initial bombardment against the advancing enemy forces, before breaking off to the South of the town waiting to be used in a flanking action.

I would advise Bravo and Delta Company's infantry to take up defensive positions within the buildings on the outskirts of the town and to avoid using lightly armored vehicles due to the large presence of enemy armor. I would suggest that you allow the enemy to get fairly close to your position before bombarding them with your Anti-Tank weapons and I have managed to get a pair of A10 Thunderbolt's on call for the duration of the defence. Then I would urge you to consider bring our armor company round to their rear to cut them off from retreat and encircle them, so that you may pour a deadly crossfire into their ranks.

I only have two direct orders for you. The first is that you must not let the Russians capture any part of Alfeld. The second is that you maintain as low casualties as possible. I can't ask any more of you men, except to do NATO proud. I am counting on you men, and I know you wont let me down.

Its time for you to stand up and be counted as soldiers.

Colonel Christopher English, Commander of the 19th NATO Battlegroup.

English was satisfied with it and he handed it to an assistant to distribute to the commanders along with the Operational maps. He leant back in his chair and silently prayed that the men of his Battlegroup wouldn't lose too many good men in the fight to come, but he knew that it would be a bloody battle for Europe. He only hoped that the Russians would lose more than they did and this terrible thing that had been put in motion could end. Or else he wasn't sure who would live to see the end of it...

______________________________

I'll update the very first post with the operational map and you can begin planning your defense. Good luck!

Andersen read the letter out loud to his tank commanders.
"Men we are the finest troops in the whole of NATO-"

Lieutenant Oswald laughed out loud: "Hah! He has never seen Tomas on the firing range!"
The Camo tent echoed with laughter, but the men got more serious as Andersen finished.

"Allright, the CO want us to dig in, excactly as we feared."
He pulled out the map of the AO
"I will take 1st Platoon and dig in on the main road just east of town. Oswald will take 2nd Platoon and take thm just north of town. When i decide that we are in some trouble, 2nd Platoon will cut down their northern flank, giving us time to disengage. I then want as much fire on them as possible as we move south. Lieutenant Møller and 3rd Platoon will prepare and hod the rendevouz point in the forests just south of Alfeld. Make sure to get some fighting holes and camo nets up, as i want Ivan to think we have retreated. Any questions?"

There was only silence and grim determination in the faces of his Commanders.

"Oswald, you get some radio operator to inform the CO and the other company commanders of our intentions. Tell the big dog that i want as much fire on Ivan as we disengage, i dont wanna get shot in arse meanwile falling back.
Gentlemen, lets teach Ivan not to mess with the Dragoons!"

Major Taylor thanked the assistant that handed him the new operational map and briefing...

After reading the entire paper, he organized his men and had them get ready to roll out. His plan was to move north of the town and secure a flanking position on the invading Russians. He would keep his LAVs at the front but hidden behind their position, in the scenario that Russian armoured elements were to pass their position. But if the company needed them, they would be only a order away.

Upon arriving at the designated location, Taylor had the LAVs move West behind cover and standby for further orders. While his infantry began to take up defensive positions and he had his recon squad up on the highest hill (Well concealed) to spot the Russians when they come. Most of his troops were inside buildings but some squads were in cover behind roadblocks and in other ample cover.

Taylor and his own commanding team were closer to the LAVs but still close to his troops. He was ready to flank the main Russian collumn but his own flank was wide open. He would have to rely on his luck, and pray to god that they weren't massacered.

The plan was to wait for some of the armour to pass and trap them in by destroying the rear units then hopefully the front units can be picked off.

"Ready Lads!!" Shouted Nick a volley of "Yes Sir!" folllowed.
