Cipher. Put a this argument on divisions into a thread. I'll gladly argue about how the 101st aren't as good as the 82nd 'All american'. |

The 101st were more decorated for there actions than the 82nd and were more harshly trained. |

To be honest. The ritish airborne are better. Back than in WW2 and now. Modern era you have your rangers and marines. We have our paras. In WWII. Who held out the longest in Operation Market Garden (whithout 30th corps help!). Don't question me about it. I'm reading a book about it right now. You may have seen Band of brothers. But it lies about the British stuborness and the US paras 'apparently' saving our arses. |

At 10pm the withdrawal of the remains of the 1st begins, as British and Canadian engineer units start ferrying the troops across the Rhine. By early the next morning they had withdrawn some 2000 of them, but another 300 were still on the north at first light when German fire stopped the effort. They surrendered. Of the 10,000 troops of the 1st Airborne Division, only 2,000 escaped. |

Its not just that. In World War 2, the British Airborne were fighting in North Africa before America had even joined the war. It was in North Africa the Germans gave them the nickname Red Devils (Red becuase they were caked in red dust, and devils becuase they fought like devils). Then they were involved in airborne landings in Sicily (82nd were as well) and performed very well, seizing many key bridges and roads on the East coast (I visited a war memorial on holiday- the price in lives was quite high). Then, they did another airborne landing on Italy itself (The 82nd did not). There was also many small-scale airdrops into occupied Europe from Britain to destroy or captured key targets, an example being Operation Biting where the electronics system of the Whurzburg Radar was captured so it could be brought back to Britain where counter-measures could be devised. Then there was obviously the British 6th Airborne landings on D-Day-The British Airborne division was the only airborne division (Out of the 3) to complete all of its first D-Day objectives including the taking of Pegasus bridge and the Merville gun battery before holding off against German counter-attacks from elite Panzer divisions moving in from the East (The US Airborne divisions were- until later on, fighting mainly inexperienced German infantry). Then there is Market Garden. The entire 1st Airborne were tasked to hold out for 2 days against the German home guard made up of old men and children until the XXX Corps could arrive to relieve them. Instead, just 700 of them held out for 5 days of vicious fighting against an elite German Panzer division complete Tiger tanks and whatever else. When they finally surrendered, the German commander said to them: "I have fought the Russians in Stalingrad, but never have I seen anyone so good at urban fighting as you. Where did you learn this?" to which the British commander replied, "It was our first time, but we will try harder next time...." Meanwhile, the rest of the division was fighting completely surrounded for 9 days before they were finally able to withdraw. And thats just World War 2. I could carry on about their other exploits since then. Thats also not mentioning the fact that Parachute Regiment training is a lot longer then the 82nd's training, and that the Parachute Regiment are renowned for jumping the lowest out of any other Airborne force in the world which has many advantages. Also, it was the British Airborne Red Beret that was copied around the world by other elite Airborne forces. Edited by Finn 1939, Aug 4 2009, 10:21 PM.

Are you using that as an argument for or against them? Because if you are using it as an argument against them, then you know absolutely nothing of Market Garden..... |

Plus we have the SAS. Which generally kicks ass and trained all of the US special forces (SBS trained the US Navy seals as well.). So basically in a nutshell...........we RULE! |
