Jensen was glad that one of the men he respected the most had just volunteered to go with him.
"its worth a shot. It will take several weeks for the Chinese to get their Heavy Armor into Korea. That would buy the UN a lot of time to consolidate."

"The rest of the Jægerkorps is arriving soon and then we will be at 100% combat effiecency. If the Para's can form a defensive line around the Bridge it would give us enough time to make sure that it is destroyed and that it wont be rebuild shortly."

As they were preparing the BBQ he heard what had happened.
"They said what!" shouted the colonel
"The jag's offered to go AWOL sir." replied Stamford
"Wow. I knew those Jag's were insane. But he's basically sacrificing all of his men!" commented the colonel.
"Maybe we should do something sir?" asked the Sgt.
"You know the motto Stamford. 'Battalion first. UN Second. But Monarchy overules'. I can't just sacrifice my men like that. If it's a direct order than yes. I'll go. Anyway. WWHat did the colonel say?" asked Reynolds

Drako continued to state into the eyes of the seemingly ignorant field marshal . Could he not see my point of view? As well he was suggesting that the
3rd task force engage one of the most sensative targets in NK. If they failed to eliminate heysan then the Chinese and Kirks would become aware of the target and all hope of ending this war quickly would go down the drain, along with countless lives. After 5 minutes of pure silence Draki cracked, he was about accept defeat when from the distance major Nelson made an amazing offer, suicide. The odds were evening and the marshals face lit up in anger. If the Canadian wanted to die that was one thing, but for a veteran to go awal was another. Another voice broke the silence, that of colonel Richardson. Now the NFC was winning.

A new surge of confidence filled Drako. Enough to continue his mission
"that's 3 sir"

Jensen ignored Colonel Drako.
The FNG felt confident even though he wasnt going to take part of this plan.
Letting someone else do the dirty work.
he brushed it aside. He needed to stay on the offensive.
"Sir, its not like the area would be heavily guarded. The KPA isnt expecting an attack so far north. Most of their units would be south, except the local garrison and beach defending units. And the area is mainly mountainous until you reach the russian border. In fact, we dont even have to enter chinese territory, except when we blow the bridge. We can move North-East and the head towards Vladivostok."

Field Marshal Asher pinched his nail into his palm, hoping to feel nothing and wake up in his crappy bed having this all of been a dream, but he felt the sharp stinging sensation in his skin and new that he was surrounded by the maddest commanders in the whole of Korea. First Major Jensen proposes a plan that was worthy of a videogame, where a unit goes AWOL and completes missions with no link to the High Command, and in the end he would sacrifice himself for the 'greater good'. Then Colonel Richardson decided that instead they would send over 700 men deep into Korean territory and try to destroy this bridge, but not only that... they would then track it to the Russian border, without being killed in the process. Asher didn't quite know which one of these commanders was more mad, but he knew what he wasn't going to.

"Did I here you correctly Colonel Richardson saying; 'if we can find a way to jump into the city'?" Asher said so quietly that the men had to strain they're ears to here him.

"Yes sir I did," he replied, looking slightly confused as to the question.

"Well that... is a fucking... great idea Colonel isn't it," Asher said, still in a quiet tone but no giving stares that kill to the once respected parachute commander. "So how exactly do you plan to do that? Whichever way you look at it, the jump would either be spotted before you got there or it would be shot down at some point going there. If we went with the Naval Approach and tried to get your men closer on ships and then go in, then I'm not sure how you intend to bypass the whole bloody North Korean Navy and maybe Chinese ships to get close enough. Or if you go with the Aerial Approach, then seeing the huge distance the planes would have to travel to get their they would have to carry a stupid amount of fuel and not only that but somehow you intend to bypass all the Korean radar which would pick up you great big transport planes and avoid all they're AA defences."

"Sir, with all due respect there would be ways to get us that close and sti-"

Before Richardson could continue, Asher was right up next to him, eyeball to eyeball and his nostrils flaring as he almost spat his next words out.

"This would be a fucking suicide mission!"

There was dead silence, but Asher knew he couldn't let this situation rest and he needed to confront these commanders right now while he had the chance. He turned to Major Jensen, who had the same calm expression that he always wore on his face but his eyes betrayed that he was not happy the way things were going, they glinted with fury.

"Major Jensen, you know better than I do that Special Forces are not trained to become lambs to the slaughter and you know that one of the main doctrines is never to use your elite units on suicide missions just because of their status," he said, pausing for breath as he ranted, almost appearing possessed to the other commanders. "Now, I have no doubt your men could secure this bridge... I have no doubt they could secure this bridge if it was only 20 miles away that is. What I do doubt is that your men could secure a bridge 400 miles into enemy territory."

Jensen would not back down though.

"Sir, but you can't expect us to believe that those piss poorly trained regulars over at the 3rd JTF to handle a key asset and strategic location in this war. I mean they're more likely to get their own men killed than actually accomplish anything," the Major said chuckling to himself.

Asher had, had enough of this egotistic commander disrespecting his fellow men and officers in the other task forces.

"Now you listen to me, very fucking carefully Lukas Jensen," Asher hissed. "If I ever here about you talking about other soldiers or officers in the combined force as 'sacks of crap', then not only will I personally see that you are court-marshalled but I shall see that an investigation be held into the conduct of the Jaegers on joint operations. Those men in that task force are as brave as you and your men will ever be, they are soldiers who are fighting a war and laying down their lives just like you are. Just because you are special forces, does not mean you are any more of a soldier than regulars in terms of bravery and in terms of pride. Do I make myself clear? If you don't like the way I command, you and your men can leave right now. I would rather have men who would work for me, than men who want to dance to their own tune."

Jensen did not seem to react to this verbal assault to him and his men but Asher could tell he was choosing what to say very carefully.

"Crystal clear... sir," Jensen said with a hint of mocking in his voice.

All the men stood looking at each other. Asher seemed to be studying each of the men carefully, hoping to see something that would betray the commanders views. Jensen was now staring into the distance not attempting eye contact with anyone. Richardson was looking towards the Dane, maybe trying to catch his eye. Most intriguing of all was Colonel Darko, he was staring directly at Asher and before the Field Marshal could say anything; he knew that the Canadian was going to say something by the way he was churning his jaw.

"Sir, if I may?" Darko started.

"Yes go on."

"Thank you sir. What I am trying to say is that, while I am sure we will eventually beat back the North Korea's huge army, by superior firepower and also superior tactics. What I am not so sure of is that if China joined the war... how long we would be able to hold out for," he began. "We would be hugely outnumbered and they would be able to flood more men in at a continual rate, where as we would not be able to get reinforcements so quickly. Surely, the more time we could buy for the Chinese to be delayed, the better and this would be an ideal opportunity to do this. Surely not even you can deny this.?"

Asher grimaced at this man's stubborn determination.

"I cannot deny that," Asher said, but he saw a smile flicker across Darko's face and therefore pressed on. "You just then, nullified you whole argument for this operation to be a success. Like you and other commanders have reminded me many times, the Korean army is vast in its millions and that is why your mission would fail. Although they would not expect an attack that far behind lines, it would only take them a matter of hours for a force 10 times as big as our raiding party even with the paratroopers to be mustered, and would soon surround you on all sides. You would not make it to the Russian border and you would all be killed, maybe even shortening the time it would be for the Chinese to join the war."

All the commanders seemed almost confused as to how to respond to the Colonel, they still believed their plan would work but they were beginning to wonder if the Field Marshal could ever be budged, but before they could even decide what to suggest next, Asher continued, sealing the final nail in the coffin. He seemed on the verge of going crazy, he was close to pulling his hair out in frustration and he felt like he was going to break down. However, Asher knew what he had to do and was determined to see this confrontation through to the end.

"Richardson... Jensen... Darko..." He said, looking at each of them in turn. "I hope you realise that I respect you as commanders and more I respect you as men, but I am close to madness when you cannot understand that I also have orders to follow. I am not Supreme Commander and I am not the be all and end all in the command structure. I have gone against my superiors once to give you and your men a good mission, but I will not go against the very fibre of my being and send your men to your deaths, just because you believe your mission could make a difference. You may not always realise it, but I care about you and your men more than anything. Maybe one day I will look back on this day and realise I was wrong, but right now I stand by my decision."

The Field Marshal buttoned up his long coat, put his black leather gloves back on and put his officers cap back on his head. The aging commander took a deep breath and turned to the gathered commanders one last time.

"There will be no more discussion, there will be no more debate and there will be no more confrontation. My decision is final."

With that he walked back to the Lynx helicopter, sat in his seat and without looking back across at the commanders he told the pilot to take off. As the helicopter rose into the sky, he buried his head in his hands and lost himself in deep thought.

I thought the enemy was meant to be the men with guns shooting at you, but now I'm not sure whether the greatest enemy is yourself, that bit of you whispering to yourself. Daring you to do the unthinkable. You have to learn to control it, or it will overwhelm you and you cease to exist.

Jensen saluted the Field Marshal as he walked away, and only eased as the helicopter lifted off.
Then he angrily returned to his Vehicle.

As it drove down the battered road leading west towards one of the bridges he looked at the destroyed buildings.
Thousands upon thousands of people would be killed by the Chinese heavy armour.
The driver pulled over the Jægers camp, one of the privates spotted him first and shouted something at him with a smile.
Something about Okse loosing a bet.

So many young people would perish before the war was over.
Jensen only hoped that the old man was ready to have the lives of one thousand soldiers on his hands.
