Wow. This is terrible news. I don't quite know what to say. I wish I could say I was shocked. I wish I could say I didn't see it coming. But in fact, I expected it... or something like it.
I'd been pestering my source to find out what was up for the guys after they got the baby and she told me weeks ago that the show had no plans for Kyle and Oliver once they got the child and there wouldn't be anything for them in the forseeable future.
At first I thought that they would be backburnered and they'd be that happily married couple with a baby. We'd see Kyle at the hospital, Oliver at the station and they'd have an occasional scene together. I thought that would be a good idea.... a cooling off period and then they could bring them back and do more traditional soapy style stories. She, however, didn't even think we'd get that much. And when SC got fired and my friend told me there'd be more coming, I knew they were out. It's why I said here that anybody could be let go and no one was safe.
This has really been a long time coming and I think the decision to get rid of them was something they considered awhile before doing it. The Kyle and Oliver romance was well received. They know this. It was everything else that was a problem. The BGW was a bad idea. And they should have never followed it up with the gay bashing story. ABC took a lot of heat for that and they ordered both stories cut and ended as quickly as possible. I think Ron went too far, too fast, overreached and the audience didn't like it.
The show really should have just stuck with Kyle and Oliver and their romantic issues and they'd still be with us today. I don't blame them for being ambitious and wanting to reach for the stars. Sometimes big ideas work out and other times they fail miserably. That's what happened this time. I just wish it wasn't costing us Kyle and Oliver. I also wish they'd have some patience and not throw out the baby with the bathwater as it were. But I imagine they think they are saving the show. However, there are much bigger problems that the gay guys, IMO.
I also believe firmly that Ron and Frank fought to keep Kyle and Oliver on the show and in story. I'm certain the order to cut them came from Frons.
But it's clear that ABC did their best to keep it underwraps until Brett and Scott had taped what was their final scenes because we know they were both taping heavily last week. Hopefully, there will be some sort of finality there, a coda so we'll know they are done and have their 'happily ever after'.
I know many of you are hurt, angry, upset and outraged and you should be and you have that right. But also lets not let that stop us from enjoying the rest of the time we do have them on our screens. Ok, well said. I think i was waiting to hear from you tonight. I'm more at peace and I will head into the sunset. Sunset called bed that is. Gosh you're so calming Anthony L!! :smooch: Good night all. Sweet KISH dreams to all. :smooch:

ABC took a lot of heat for the BGW - that I can understand. But the gay bashing? Seriously?
God forbid they should tell a story about something that happens in real life weekly. Better to let these phobic morons keep their heads firmly implanted in their asses, in their safe, happy little make believe world.
Pathetic.
If this is true, then it's the WRITERS fault, and not the actors.
It feels so very "throw the gays out with the bathwater" to me. And I thought the beginnings of the gaybashing storyline was extraordinarily well-played.
If I look at the rest of the show and what was playing out at that time, now all I want to do is :vomit:

So is there really nothing that we can do as fans? Like would there be a chance if we all pulled our resources and sent letters and made phone calls that Kish would stay on?

what gets me is why they're letting the gay wedding thing effect kyle and oliver? hasn't rex been in some bad storylines? gigi? blair? TODD?!
they're all safe. i dont get it. what am i missing? That they are all core characters who have been with the show for years. They can withstand a bad story or two. A couple of newbies with no ties to the canvas.... that's a whole other different story.
I do think they're unfairly getting the blame for all the problems with the show, however.

Yeah I don't get why end the whole dang story. Just backburn them for a bit. It's not like the ratings keep hitting lows either. They've rebounded some. I think the show is about to be canceled and they are grasping at straws. Too bad the wrong people are being let go. There are far bigger problems with OLTL than Kyle & Fish.

AnthonyL (or anyone, really)...do you think the show meant to break the news of Scott Clifton's firing and Kish's dimissal back-to-back or it was an accident or mix-up?

I'm just so bummed and angry. I mean, you partake in pop culture long enough, this kind of thing happens. Your favorite TV shows gets cancelled. Your favorite move franchise puts out a crappy sequel. Your favorite band breaks up. It's part of life.
But the way this went down just...it's gross, you know?
i find it all in insulting. letting the haters win, yadda yadda, blaming the ratings on the gays....i mean, really now? gee whiz
Not only is it insulting and nonsensical but it achieves nothing. Does the show believe they will get fans back because Kyle and Oliver are off their screens? Of course, they won't because there are a hundred other reasons why people have stopped watching. It is like an olive branch to homophobes who have likely moved on anyway. But instead ABC points a finger at the gay characters, "J'accuse, you are the sole, only, absolute reason for the low ratings, so be gone."
Co-sign. And *drink* Cheers.
Or, not.
Merlot all around.

ABC basically telegraphed to its audience that one segment of the viewing audience is irrelevant and that the haters' voices supersede the good work that Ron, Scott and Brett put into this story. It's disgusting. It's outright bigotry that ABC kowtowed to.
Yes, j. That's exactly what they did. And they can all rot in hell for it. GLBQT people are as much a part of this world as any other people . . . . and this continued marginalization of us HAS GOT TO STOP. I draw a comparison with disenfranchisement, if you will. Evidently, our voices do not have equal weight as the homophobic assholes to whom ABC Daytime capitulates. And that's what really hurts because at the end of the day, it's not just about this awesome fictional couple but it's a message that the LGBTQ community and their friends and supporters' voices do not matter.
The treatment of Kyle and Oliver is but a symbol of the prejudice and hatred still so prevalent in this fucking country.
I wholeheartedly believe Ron fought the good fight, and yes, he told as much as he could with this story. It was almost as if he felt it was imperative to tell everything he could with a gay storyline - coming out, falling in love, gay marriage, gay bashing and gay parenting - because no one else in daytime had the courage to do that. Hindsight is 20/20 but I commend Ron for breaking so much ground in the last 10 months that the KISH saga played out because no other program - prime time or otherwise - in U.S. network television can claim that distinction.
So, the struggle continues. I have to remind myself that declaring the miscegenation laws in this country unconstitutional only occurred in 1967 with the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Loving v. Virginia. So just like any struggle for civil rights, we still have a long, long way to go.
And no one can ever take KISH and what Scott, Brett and Ron have given to us. No one. Their work has been a true gift, and one I know I will cherish for the rest of my life.

I'll enjoy whatever the show gives us for SE and BC's sake... but insofar as "going quietly", I want ABCDumbasses to know that they can't do shit like this and not have certain fans (okay... just me) sit quietly by.
Caving into bigots is not right. Caving into hate is wrong. That's what I feel ABCD is doing.
Ugh! I should try to calm down and get some sleep at some point....

So is there really nothing that we can do as fans? Like would there be a chance if we all pulled our resources and sent letters and made phone calls that Kish would stay on? Except that they are done taping. If they last air in mid-April, those scenes would have been taped last week. Essentially, they are already finished with the show, not building to their final day of work. They've already HAD their final day of work.
