Wow. This is terrible news. I don't quite know what to say. I wish I could say I was shocked. I wish I could say I didn't see it coming. But in fact, I expected it... or something like it. I'd been pestering my source to find out what was up for the guys after they got the baby and she told me weeks ago that the show had no plans for Kyle and Oliver once they got the child and there wouldn't be anything for them in the forseeable future. At first I thought that they would be backburnered and they'd be that happily married couple with a baby. We'd see Kyle at the hospital, Oliver at the station and they'd have an occasional scene together. I thought that would be a good idea.... a cooling off period and then they could bring them back and do more traditional soapy style stories. She, however, didn't even think we'd get that much. And when SC got fired and my friend told me there'd be more coming, I knew they were out. It's why I said here that anybody could be let go and no one was safe. This has really been a long time coming and I think the decision to get rid of them was something they considered awhile before doing it. The Kyle and Oliver romance was well received. They know this. It was everything else that was a problem. The BGW was a bad idea. And they should have never followed it up with the gay bashing story. ABC took a lot of heat for that and they ordered both stories cut and ended as quickly as possible. I think Ron went too far, too fast, overreached and the audience didn't like it. The show really should have just stuck with Kyle and Oliver and their romantic issues and they'd still be with us today. I don't blame them for being ambitious and wanting to reach for the stars. Sometimes big ideas work out and other times they fail miserably. That's what happened this time. I just wish it wasn't costing us Kyle and Oliver. I also wish they'd have some patience and not throw out the baby with the bathwater as it were. But I imagine they think they are saving the show. However, there are much bigger problems that the gay guys, IMO. I also believe firmly that Ron and Frank fought to keep Kyle and Oliver on the show and in story. I'm certain the order to cut them came from Frons. But it's clear that ABC did their best to keep it underwraps until Brett and Scott had taped what was their final scenes because we know they were both taping heavily last week. Hopefully, there will be some sort of finality there, a coda so we'll know they are done and have their 'happily ever after'. I know many of you are hurt, angry, upset and outraged and you should be and you have that right. But also lets not let that stop us from enjoying the rest of the time we do have them on our screens. |

I feel exactly the same way!!! Never have I felt this devastated over two fictional characters....in my head I know the actors will be fine....They are two very very talented men and I can't wait to see what else they do...but Kyle and Oliver are special to me as to others and I feel like they've been ripped from my life for no reason. :waah: |

i get that the gay wedding thing pissed people off or whatever...i hated the bashing storyline (we've seen it too many times) what gets me is why they're letting the gay wedding thing effect kyle and oliver? hasn't rex been in some bad storylines? gigi? blair? TODD?! they're all safe. i dont get it. what am i missing? |

Not only is it insulting and nonsensical but it achieves nothing. Does the show believe they will get fans back because Kyle and Oliver are off their screens? Of course, they won't because there are a hundred other reasons why people have stopped watching. It is like an olive branch to homophobes who have likely moved on anyway. But instead ABC points a finger at the gay characters, "J'accuse, you are the sole, only, absolute reason for the low ratings, so be gone." |

As if Brett's "Freebirding" wasn't enough to make me cry... Now your post, Anthony, and the fact that it was pretty much written since last year is making me teary. Still, I'm seething with rage at how this dismissial was handled. And that Scott didn't know (I get that he's on recurring, but he's basically a major character and not a "Nick" you know???) And whether or not Brett knew something was coming. I'm thinking he didn't because it sounded like he did get a new place in a new neighborhood in NY from one of his FB updates. The sad thing is I enjoyed the BGW overall. And I was so excited to see the gay-bashing played out. I guess I"m in the "Minority" of viewers or some stupid shit, but... I'm still completely gutted. I'll try to enjoy it, but I think I'd enjoy this a whole lot better if I knew that SE and BC actually had work lined up after April.... GOD, this really sucks.... |

Anthony: do you have any thoughts on Ron's and/or Frank's future with the show? And do you have any idea when a decision might be made by ABC about the show's next renewal? If, indeed, another renewal is even possible at this point. I assume by the observation that the show has much bigger problems than the Kyle and Oliver story, that the show going off the air entirely is the much bigger problem. |

Which is the gay one?
|
ABC took a lot of heat for the BGW - that I can understand. But the gay bashing? Seriously? God forbid they should tell a story about something that happens in real life weekly. Better to let these phobic morons keep their heads firmly implanted in their asses, in their safe, happy little make believe world. Pathetic. |
