I actually hint which way I prefer to think of it, but it was written, deliberately, fairly neutral as to which of them is left alone. I think it is better to not commit to one way of interpreting it. Not only does it let others imagine the story as it suits them, but I also wanted to make the point that it doesn't matter which of them has died; the other would be feeling like this. I feel it strengthens the key point about their bond. |

That totally came across. Got your little hint at the end, but really, it could be read either way :) |

Hm. I've just written another vignette. I'm a little unsure about posting it, however, as it is rather bitter. Seems like I'm in a dark mood right now, although most of my writing in my life has been dark. |

Well I think dark writing has it's place. It gets us thinking, which is always a good thing. It gets us more emotionally involved usually, as well. I think both of your works are fantastic. I wonder how you would deal with comedy? Either way, you're a fantastic writer. |

*blushes* Thank you. It is good to know that I've managed to convey at least some of my intent with these vignettes. For me, darkness is about contrast. If everyone were happy all of the time, then happiness would cease to have meaning. To me, it is important to face the dark and appreciate the contrast it makes with the light. If you look at my artistic works — my writing, my poetry and my graphic design — they're all about contrast and the balance of light and dark, joy and pain. I like a black background as a settling for a brilliant jewel, like Kyle and Oliver's love and affection. My writing has always been like this though, ever since I was 15 and wrote my first piece about a rent boy in the east-end of London. My sense of humour is similarly based on bittersweet contrasts. When I do write comedy, it is dry and black comedy with a heavy slant towards satire. I try and inject some humour into my designs too, although it tends to be arch and in the subtext. You wouldn't laugh out loud at one of my pieces, but if you get the inside jokes you may raise your eyebrows in wry amusement. Anyway, I hope to be able to continue to contribute from time to time. I tend to write when inspiration strikes and I can get the idea down in a few minutes. I'm still trying to finish my PhD and am a software developer and project manager at a couple of start ups as well as trying to secure funding for a couple of other ventures. This leaves me spread a bit thin :) For now, I'm simply happy to have given something back to this community. |

I know this is called a dark fic, but it didn't make me feel that way. It showcased the inevitable end that must one day come to something so wonderful and special. Your story was peppered with the blessed memories of a life lived full and without regret. Not even at the end. Not even in death. If we're lucky, we all get a love and a life like this one. Well done. |

Very well done jsg. I too could see this from either a Kyle or Oliver perspective. The use of no dialog and still presenting such emotion is amazing. Super job! |
