The Whore of Babylon

Hi, I wasn't sure if this was the right spot for this topic, but since it does involve fanfiction and websites that a great many of us post on, I thought I put it here. A friend of mine who lives in NJ is boycotting Fanfiction.net because the site is heavily rotating ads from the National Organization of Marriage, which, as most of you probably know, seeks to prevent "legal recognition of same-sex marriage" (Wikipedia--NOM). There is a possibility, given what's going on with voting in the NY and NJ state legislatures that there's some targeted advertising. Either way, though, I'm sending an email out to FFN that I won't be supporting their website until the ads are pulled. So if you feel the same way I do about it, boycott 'em too! |

Do sites like that choose their advertisers? Most sites just sell their advertising space to a company, that sells to whomever wants to advertise on a given site. I only get ads in my own language when I'm on that site, so I doubt that the owners have any say in what ads come up on that site. :halo: Edited by evanos, Dec 2 2009, 02:06 PM.

Honestly, I don't know if they have a say. I do think, if people wanted to, they can communicate with FFN and let them know where they stand. And if FFN does work with a company who sells it to whomever, they can let that company know and try to get them to pull the ads. Whatever the process is, though, it's disconcerting and upsetting to me to see that ad up. |

But then, one should raise the concern instead of boycotting them. I dunno. I never even notice commercials on sites like these. I guess I've got a bs-filter or sumpin'. LOL |

Totally. One could raise the concern... or one can boycott. Or tell people and they can do whatever they want. I'm still thinking about what I want to do. I'm leaning toward emailing and not posting any more stories until it's gone. But that's just me. Normally, I notice the ads, but they're rather innocuous, pop culture-y things. Not for organizations that promote inequality and... well, hate. |

Thanks for telling us about this WTF. I rarely go to FF, but I'll send them an e-mail and I'll mention it on other boards I go to. |

Thanks for letting us know about this WTF - I'll contact the site. I first read your story over there, and see that it's not been updated. I know that NOM ads have appeared on the Americablog site (gay liberal blog), and it took them a while to sort it out - and I know that it took a while for them to get rid of the ads. |
