The Writing Challenge - Comment Thread I thought I would post the next week's challenge today so people have something to do over the weekend while waiting for next week! For those of you who don't know, AU means alternate universe. The characters are the same (and should act how you think they would if they were in this AU) but the story is obviously MUCH different. THE CHALLENGE -> 10/30 - 11/6 AU - The High School Challenge Write a love story (5 chapter limit, shorter stories and one-shots accepted) where Kyle Lewis and Oliver Fish are high school students, and instead of them first meeting in college they know each other here! I don't wanna place very many limits on this challenge. Kyle and Oliver could just be meeting for the first time, or they met years ago, or they've been lifelong friends! The plot and backstory is writer's choice!! (but please, have a plot, not just mindless high school events... make sure your story has a beginning, middle, climax, and end!). You can make this a coming-out story for one or both the characters, a secret love story, a story ending with one character breaking the other's heart because he won't come out, or you ignore the entire coming out issue (like they're already out or where being gay is so accepted that you don't have to come out) or whatever else you can think of... Like I said, I want as much of your story and plot to be your own choice as possible, I'm just throwing out ideas that might get you started if you're clueless. ~Themes you can add that involve teens in real life (optional): Drug Abuse, Teen Pregnancy, Depression, Falling in and out of love really fast, Cheating, Stealing, Car Crashes, Underage drinking, Having to be the grown-up in the family (as a teen) etc... Sorry those were all negative things, I couldn't think of very many positive themes involving teens. THERE IS ONE REAL RULE TO SOMETHING YOU MUST INCLUDE IN YOUR STORY (other than making it an AU High School Story): Your story must include AT LEAST 1 other character from OLTL other than Oliver and Kyle. It can be anyone! You could have English teacher Viki and her rival the french teacher Dorian! You could have Principal John McBain, you could have teenage sweethearts Cris and Layla. The jealous ex, Nick. The theater sponsor, David. Or whatever else you think of! You can place ANY character in ANY roll in your story (and even change the character's age to make them fit in your story! Do you want Matt, Marko, Dorian, John, Brody, David, Destiny, Kyle and Oliver to all be in the same class? As long as you write it so it makes sense, fine by me!), as long as you have someone from OLTL as a side character if not a main in your story. Does this other character have to be directly involved in Kyle and Oliver's story? No. Do you have to give them an entire backstory? No. Will I let you get away with a passing mention of the character and nothing more? Sure. Like I said, I want this story to be your's. But I thought I would make this rule to give the challenge a more interesting taste! ;) BE CAREFUL! Placing too many characters in your story can clutter your story especially if you give them all a backstory, so it might be best to limit yourself on how many you want to be in your story. Sometimes it's best to have a supporting character have 1 line and not another mention of them, no backstory included. They're just there to move the story between the main characters along. But again, writer's choice! ABOUT THE 5 CHAPTER LIMIT ~if you are planning on writing more than just a one shot, I would ask that you DO NOT post a chapter until you are ready to post them all. That way we can stay somewhat organized and keep story chapters next to each other. ~Do prologues and epilogues count toward the 5 chapter limit? no. However, they are optional so if you don't want one with your story then don't make one ~Remember to post ONLY stories in this thread and everything else over in the comment thread. This is to help keep things organized and help keep the fanfic forum clean and not flood it every week with responses to this challenge. ~Please remember to follow forum rules by giving your fanfic a rating and a title! Alright, sorry I wrote so much!! Happy Writing! Edited by TimeToFly, Oct 30 2009, 06:01 PM.
