This story has been rewritten, so if you'd like to read it, please go to "It's Never Too Late" ~ttf RATING: PG-13 -> language and possible violence. DISCLAIMER: I do not own the characters, or anything else relating to One Life to Live. A/N: This is the first time I've attempted writing anything in YEARS. Let's hope it turns out good, eh? I'm not quite sure if I wanna one shot this or chapter it... We'll see once I seriously sit down and start writing it, 'cause right now it's just a vague jumble of ideas... So... a theme that's often avoided is angst. We want to avoid all the bad stuff because we want everything to turn out good... but sometimes it's not always good... And thus we get... ~~~ It's Never Too Late Prologue "My name is Oliver Fish, and this is my story. I am an officer at the Llanview Police Department. All my life I've lived on the straight and narrow... heh... straight... Anyway, I guess what I'm attempting to say is I've always tried to live my life and be the example others could follow. Be the good man that was always there... Be the man... that could protect others... "My name is Oliver Fish, and this is the story of how I died..." Edited by TimeToFly, Oct 20 2009, 03:47 PM.

A/N: Alright... so I HAVE decided to chapter this story! I actually wrote part of the climax and the end of the story before I began the first chapter, so just bear with me, as it starts out slow, but I PROMISE if you stick with me the end will be worth it! Anyway, I'm a cook/student not a writer, so forgive me for it being slow, but I had to start the story somehow... It's Never Too Late CHAPTER 1 – A moment in the park Officer Fish walked through the park. He decided to take his time getting back to his apartment and enjoy the beautiful day. His day at the police department was slow and uneventful. Just another day in Llanview... Well, if just another day could exist here. He stopped walking and looked up at the sky for a moment. It felt like one of those days from his childhood, where the sun was out and the clouds were like giant while pillows. He took in a deep breath of the crisp fall air and closed his eyes to enjoy it. “Hey Fish!” He dropped his head and opened his eyes, looking around before finding who called him. “Oh, hey Nick.” Nick rushed up to him, carrying what looked like a bunch of flyers, and seeming unusually excited about seeing him “I'm gonna cut to the chase, we're holding a rally tonight to try and build support for Gay Marriage and we could use a cop in uniform to help bolster that support!” “Uhm... sure, when?” “Tonight, I'll get back to you with the details, but I gotta go!” he said, smiling widely before spinning and rushing away in the opposite direction he came from. Fish watched him as he left, and let out a short chucked. “Well, THAT was really weird.” “What, the part where he was so happy, or the part about him being excited to see you?” Oliver jumped and turned around to see that Kyle was standing behind him. “How long have you been-?” “I was coming behind him, but I guess since he was acting so weird you didn't notice.” “So, you noticed too? Wait... did- did you do that to him?” Kyle laughed “You say it like it's a bad thing!” “It's just so strange... Why was he so happy? It was like... he was floating...” Oliver said, turning a bit toward the direction Nick ran off to as if to see him again. Kyle's smile faded. “He's been wanting to get more serious in our relationship, and I told him this morning that I was...” he held back a second, knowing it would hurt Oliver “That I was ready to.” And hurt Oliver it did, but he certainly covered it well. He pulled on a façade and began to smile, “Well that's great, isn't it? And yet... you say it like that's a bad thing.” Oliver knew why Kyle had said it like that, but refused to show it. “Well, I guess we'll see, won't we?” Kyle said, raising his eyebrows and turning to walk away “I'll see you later, Oliver” He called back, raising a hand. “Yea, at the rally.” Kyle stopped and turned for a moment “Uhh... I won't be going... I've got... Hospital duty tonight... But you guys have fun!” Kyle smiled again and walked away. “Yea... sure...” Oliver spoke quietly to himself, still confused. |

A/N: ok, so I have the night off (and most of the weekend) and this story is actually really exciting me so expect a lot of fairly quick updates. I wanna see if I can finish this before the end of the weekend. The reason it's so exciting for me? Because as before mentioned I haven't tried writing anything in YEARS and it's exciting that I'm finally inspired to write something! I just can't stop! Now, I do have the end story thought out, but until we get there I'm kinda just writing as I go, trying to get the story to evolve a little bit... anywho... here we go! It's Never Too Late CHAPTER 2 – Words can be great... or not. Oliver went to the rally in uniform like he said he would. He knew the Kyle wasn't going to be there, but he looked around the crowd anyway. One face he was slightly surprised to see- “Hi, Oliver!” “Hey, Layla... I wasn't expecting to see you here” he said, slightly surprised. “Well, I have a gay best friend slash roommate.” She said leaning forward and smiling, “I thought I'd throw in my support!” “Well, that's great” He said, smiling back at her. Ever since he had finally admitted to himself and his roommates that he was gay, they had been so supportive. Even after using her, Layla forgave so easily, and Oliver still didn't feel like he really deserved it, but he promised both Layla and Kyle that he would try to forgive himself... It just wasn't coming easily... “So,” Layla said, never seeming to be in poor spirits “I notice Kyle's not here.” She was trying to be supportive, knowing that Oliver still had a thing for Kyle, but sometimes he just wished Layla and Chris would look at each other more than him. “Did you notice that Nick's totally not phased by that fact?” She turned to take a look at Nick who was standing by the podium talking to some official looking people. His seemed very cheery and almost like he was floating like he was this morning, despite talking to whoever it was that he was talking to. “Uhm... yea, what's with that?” “Kyle.” He said, disappointment obvious in his voice. “Oh...” She said, lowering her head slightly. “You wanna talk about it?” He sighed, “Not really... Kyle really has moved on... I just need to... accept that fact.” And yet every time that thought crossed his mind, he felt a twinge of pain in his chest, and tried to think of something else. “Can I have everyone's attention, please!” came Nick's voice from the podium. “We'll talk about it later” Layla whispered over to him. Oh, I can't wait He thought sarcastically. ***~~*~*~~*** A week passed without Oliver running into either Nick nor Kyle, but that wasn't good because not seeing them left his mind to wander, and a wandering depressed mind is not a good thing... His dreams, although many times had been about Kyle, were now about Kyle and Nick. Kyle would give Oliver a smile before turning toward Nick and kissing him. Then the two would walk off to Kyle's place for things Oliver really did not want to think about so he forced himself awake. It was never the same dream every night, but it might as well have been. They all said the same thing... Kyle is with Nick now. He doesn't love you anymore. And that just made Oliver even more depressed. He was likely to turn himself into an insomniac just to avoid the dreams at this rate. Layla and Chris began noticing that he was acting different. He was becoming more distant from them, and always seemed depressed. Whenever they tried to approach him about it he'd say he was tired and was going to turn in for the night (but instead he would just sit on his bed for hours trying to shut off his mind) or he would go out for a run (avoiding the gym for fear of seeing either Kyle or Nick) and then quickly hop in the shower when he got back. One day, though, he was running through the park on his way back to his apartment when who else should he run into: Kyle. “Hey, Oliver.” Kyle said, slightly mellow. Oliver slowed down to a small jog-in-place (to protect his heart from a sudden stop from the running). “Hey, Kyle.” He breathed out, realizing that his run was probably a little too fast of one. “What's up?” “Layla came to me at the hospital.” Oliver stopped his jog, and put his hands on his head. “Why's that?” he said, trying to catch his breath. “Because she said she was worried about you. Something about a few days being understandable but after a week she started getting worried...” “What do you mean?” Oliver asked, lowering his arms and still breathing heavily, but knowing where the conversation was going. “You know what I mean. Ever since I mentioned that me and Nick were.... starting to get serious... You've been avoiding places we would normally run into each other, and Layla says that you've been secluding yourself... Avoiding them. I thought we had this figured out.” “Had what figured out?” Oliver asked, now starting to get slightly angry. Kyle sighed. “That you and me were in the past... You have to get over me, Oliver. I've moved on.” Oliver took a deep breath, both to calm his racing heart (now racing for two reasons) and his anger. After a moment he looked Kyle in the eyes and said “Look... I don't know if I'll ever get over you.” “Well, you have to try.” “Do you think I haven't? How do you think if feels to love someone who you know does not and will not love you back?” He spat out the words, but was instantly filled with regret because of them. “Oh,” Kyle said, spite and loathing filling his voice “I know.” He spat back. He turned and started walking away “See ya around, Fish...” then barely audible but still loud enough for Oliver to hear it “Or not...” Oliver, now feeling extremely guilty for what he had said turned to face him raising his arms “Kyle, wait...” but it was too late. He turned around, and took a few steps. “Damnit!” he quietly shouted as he punched the ground. Edited by TimeToFly, Oct 15 2009, 07:52 PM.

It's Never Too Late... CHAPTER 3 – Drunken Panic “Hey, Oliver!” Oliver twitched internally at the thought that Nick thought them friends enough to be able to call him by his first time. “Here to gloat?” he answered back, taking a swig from his drink. “You know what, beer's not enough... Bartender! Give me a shot of your finest, and keep it coming.” “Woah, man... you alright? I knew you still liked Kyle, but come on.” “You are here to gloat, aren't you? Swig. Drop. Pour. Nick seemed taken aback. “Now why would I wanna do that? Your Kyle's friend! Once upon a time his best friend. If something happened to you he'd be hurt. I can't let that happen.” “Why, cause you're his boyfriend.” Nick paused. “Yea.” Swig. Drop. Pour. “Well!” Oliver coughed out “You have no need to worry. We had a fight... I doubt it he'll ever talk to me again.” “So that was it...” Nick said, pondering to himself. “So, that's what?” Oliver asked, holding his next drink. “He came to me today... crying.” Oliver raised his eyebrows. Kyle was always the tougher one, even though Oliver didn't want to admit it. Crying? Kyle doesn't cry... “So, he was crying? I take it you asked him why and he wouldn't tell you. But every time he's had an issue since you've known him it's been about me, so you came seeking me out, when he kicked you out, eh?” Now it was Nick's turn to raise his eyebrows. He folded his arms as well, “Pretty much.” Swig. Drop. The bartender glared at him with a 'You better watch out or you're gonna get kicked out' look. Pour. “Well then, like I said, no worries... I don't think we're gonna be talking again any time soon.” Oliver stared at his drink, like he was pondering what it thought about the situation. He absentmindedly started swirling it. Nick sat at the bar next to him and Oliver shot him a glare. “That's good then... There should be nothing standing in my way.” He stopped swirling his drink. “What do you mean, 'nothing standing in my way'?” Nick just looked at him and smiled “Well, it's only a matter of time until gay marriage is legalized. And I want to make history as being one of the first, with Kyle as my husband.” Oliver put his drink down and turned to face his body toward Nick. “Do you even actually love him, or are you using him?” Nick laughed at the accusation, “Of course I love him, he's my boyfriend! And soon to be fiancé!” Nick stood up. “Enjoy your drink, Oliver.” He walked out of the bar. Oliver sat there in silence for a few minutes, the thoughts jumbling around in his head, made worse by the alcohol starting to kick in. Kyle would never agree to it. Would he? He's only known Nick for a few months, there was no way he would go through with it! ...Right? Oliver stood up quickly and the room spun for a moment. He braced himself on the bar as he regained his balance. He took a few stumbling steps away from the bar when the bartender very loudly cleared his throat. Oliver turned around, pulled out his wallet, and carefully counted out bills. He didn't feel like tipping. He threw them on the bar and began stumbling away again. The bartender counted quickly and cleared his throat again. “What?!” Oliver shouted back at him. “I don't care if you didn't drink it, I poured it, and you're gonna pay for it.” The bartender said, pointing to the full shot glass still sitting there. Oliver pulled out a ten, and slammed it down on the counter. “Keep the change. I've got a wedding to stop.” Swig. Drop. “Yea, good luck with that!” The bartender shouted after him. Run. Oliver stumbled out of the bar. How much had he been drinking before Nick showed up? He couldn't remember... All he could think about was Kyle... Nick was using him as his way to fame... Yes Nick wanted change... but he wanted the glory of being one of the first, as well. Oliver continued to stumble down the sidewalk. He had to get to Kyle's... Where was that blasted hotel, again? He stumbled down the sidewalk for ages until he saw it... There was the hotel... There was Kyle, and possibly Nick as well... He had to stop them... All he had to do was cross the street... The last thing he remembered was the flash of light and a blaring horn. A/N: Heh... uhm... yea.... Ok, sorry about Nick's character being slightly different in this chapter, but I needed a way to move the story along... And no, this is not the end!! I can promise several more chapters. You'll just have to wait and see how it plays out! |
