I had started reading this story but lost track of it. I just re-found it and read the last few chapters and I'm totally loving it! Kyle is one mixed-up puppy. And you had me cracking up with Roxy's nicknames for the guys :) Looking forward to more. |

I want to thank everyone for being so supportive of this adventure of mine. You have no idea how much this has all meant to me. I will say more in a bit. For now, I apologize if there is too much cheesiness and not enough raunchiness, but that is how it worked out. I hope you all will enjoy what came to the story this week. Chapter 12 Kyle sat back down on the bench. Oliver wasn’t coming back and the thought brought him right around to the beginning. He could see the images play out in his mind of Oliver rejecting and leaving him all those years ago, but the impact on him had softened slightly. In a strange way, he felt like some of the weight had been lifted off his shoulders. Maybe because he had finally reached the point where he thought things might finally be different for he and Oliver; that Oliver had changed. Or maybe it was because Oliver now got a taste of what it had been like for him. It wasn’t intentional, but he must have felt what Kyle had been through many times over at Oliver’s hand. There was no denying that he should now be able to understand a bit Kyle’s pain. And as he thought of Oliver’s denial over the years, he laughed ruefully to himself. He could no longer deny that all he wanted was Oliver. He had needed Nick and maybe still needed him, but not remotely close to the way he needed Oliver. Now that Oliver had left, he recognized his own denial of his feelings and finally accepted what all the messages had been trying to tell him. He loved Oliver and no one else. He slowly moved off the bench and back to his room. He wondered if he may have lost the one chance of getting Oliver back. He had to trust in the messages now. If Oliver was as different as he recent events had shown, he would still jump at the chance to be with Kyle. He called Oliver’s cell once. It went to voicemail. Not the best sign. He said he wanted to talk to him today face to face and left it at that. Later as he made his way to the hospital, he called Nick. The morning was busy, complete with a wide range of emergencies, but enough happened to keep his mind off the fact that he not heard from or seen Oliver so far. The ER was always intense and filled with amazing opportunities, but today he finally got the chance to do the type of work he had always felt drawn to do. From early on, he knew he wanted to focus on pediatrics. An innocent child truly touched his heart in a way that kept him yearning to be a better doctor, even a better person, in order to help them. This morning, a young girl was brought in with second and third degree burns on her hand from a pot of boiling water. It could have been a lot worse. She was lucky, but Kyle felt a small thrill from really seeing the good he could do and how much he enjoyed it. His mood lightened considerably as she was improved enough to go out of the ER. As he watched her and her parents go, he saw Nick come into the ER waiting room. His insides clenched and he headed to the locker room to get ready to leave. He wanted to give himself a moment to prepare in hopes that when he started talking, he would know what to say. Nick seemed in a chipper mood that made Kyle’s heart sink a bit. Kyle headed them toward the small outdoor park that ran alongside the hospital. It was a bit chilly so not many people were around. Nick seemed to feel Kyle’s anxiety as they walked out and sat down. ‘I thought we were headed to Rodi’s for lunch. Do you have time to hang out here?’ Kyle took a breath. ‘Nick…. I need to talk to you about something first.’ Kyle searched for the right words, but struggled to start the sentences he had rehearsed earlier in his mind. ‘I’m sorry, Nick. I really care about you, but I can’t ignore certain …things that have been happening to me anymore. I need to .. I’m so sorry. You’ve helped me so, so much and I appreciate it more than I can tell you, but I ..’ Nick cut him off. ‘You’re breaking up with me. Wow,’ he breathed out. ‘I shouldn’t be surprised, but I have to tell you I still am. We are so good together, Kyle. Can’t you see that? Is it me? What..’ Kyle interjected, ‘No, not at all. I think we are good together too, but there are…other things that I can’t ignore and it’s not fair to you….’ Nick sighed, ‘Ahh, yes of course, it’s Oliver. I should have seen this last night. I just didn’t want to, I guess. I haven’t wanted to admit it, but you’re still in love with him, aren’t you? You can’t be with me, because you…love him, right?’ Kyle couldn’t stop looking at him. This wonderful, generous man didn’t deserve this. He wanted to tell him something else, but couldn’t. There wasn’t anything else to say. He simply nodded his head. ‘I really care about you Nick. I hope you know that. There aren’t enough words to say…’ Nick stood up. ‘I know. Maybe after some time, we can talk about this again, but I hope you don’t mind if I go now.’ Nick started to turn to leave then turned back. ‘I ..I love you, Kyle. Maybe the timing is wrong, but …there it is. I wish you well and I hope Oliver knows what he has this time. Be happy.’ Nick briefly touched his face and then walked quickly out of the park and off the hospital grounds. Kyle took a couple deep breaths. A few bubbles of doubt started to come up, but in his heart, he knew he had done the right thing. As he headed to the cafeteria, he checked his cell phone again. Nothing. No word from Oliver. As he worried momentarily, he saw the face of the only other person that he wanted to see right now. He headed immediately over to her table. ‘Hi. Mind if I join you?’ Roxy’s face lit up. ‘Well, well, well if it isn’t the doctor in training. Kyle, you remember my grandson, Shane?’ Kyle smiled, ‘Actually, I don’t know if you remember me. I..ah,..helped when you were really sick not too long ago. How are you feeling?’ He sat down as Shane said he felt pretty good, in fact, good enough to go get some ice cream if it were alright with Roxy? Roxy fished in her purse for the funds. ‘Knock yourself out kid, but do me a favor and get me some Rocky Road if they have some. Got it?’ Roxy beamed at her grandson as he walked off. ‘Isn’t he great? He’s getting his checkup today, but he seems great doesn’t he?’ Kyle nodded and agreed that he did look as if he were completely back on track. Roxy turned her examining eye to him and wondered he had gotten any sleep over the last two days. ‘So, ah, what’s up with you? You don’t look so hot. I mean, you look hot, but not like you’ve had a good sleep in awhile. Is that a good thing or a bad thing?’ Kyle chuckled at her. ‘Not a really a good thing, unfortunately. I tried your simultaneous dating experiment and it was a pretty much a complete disaster. Dating two guys at once is definitely not for me.’ Roxy’s eyes danced. ‘So tell me all the details. Are you back with the hot cop yet or are you still stuck with Mr. Sweater Vest? Spill it.’ He told her about the past day’s events and how he was now feeling about Oliver. To say she took it well is an understatement. She jumped and gave him a huge hug. ‘Now you just need to throw yourself on the Fish and it will be smooth sailing from here.’ Kyle still needed a bit of reassurance. His phone continued to be silent. ‘He was pretty upset this morning. He thinks I am still with Nick and probably that I was using his feelings just to get back at him. Not a great way to get back together with someone.’ Roxy waved it off. ‘No way. I’m sorry. If the Fish doesn’t immediately throw himself on you then my name isn’t Roxanne Balsom. …And it is Roxanne Balsom, just so you know. There was that other time that…oh, forget it.’ Kyle laughed. She was certainly a bright spot in this day. As he left Roxy and Shane eating their ice cream, he gave her a big kiss on the cheek. She immediately jumped up and gave him a huge hug. ‘Don’t you worry about it okay? Everything is going to be fine. I just know it. Tell me all about it after the sparks fly.’ He wasn’t sure what kind of sparks she meant, but he set it in his mind that it was the good variety. The afternoon flew by as he worked. He checked his phone occasionally just to confirm the fact to himself that Oliver had not yet called. His nerves were starting to escalate a bit. What if Oliver really thought he would do something like that to him? Set him up for a fall? His past bad behavior could be coming back to haunt him. Could Oliver really believe him capable of that? Oliver believed he was capable of murder before… He was nearly done with his shift when he heard Oliver’s voice. Kyle was behind one of the exam room curtains with a patient, but he could have sworn he heard Oliver. His ears burned but now he couldn’t hear anything distinctly in the buzz of the ER. He assumed he imagined it and focused on the patient. It wasn’t like he hadn’t been hoping to hear his voice all day. His mind was playing with him. As he finished his part of the exam and was making notes, he heard Oliver again, this time closer. Just down the hall, he thought. Kyle’s heart started to pound in his chest. Was Oliver looking for him? He picked up a conversation he was having with someone else. Another man was saying, ‘It was a pretty nasty scene. You guys should be able to iron it all out though. Hey, look I wanted to ask you...’ The pause was long enough that Kyle thought that maybe they moved away. ‘Are you, ah, seeing anyone at the moment? I have tickets to a great concert at Capricorn this weekend and I was wondering if you would consider joining me?’ Kyle’s heart stopped as the pause was longer still. ‘That is very flattering. My roommate runs Capricorn. I know the concert will be fantastic.’ ‘You are seeing someone else then? I understood, well you know rumors, that you had just come out and weren’t with anyone yet. I was hoping you would find coming out with me tempting. But I understand…’ ‘Look, it’s very flattering. I’m …I can’t right now. It’s complicated.’ ‘Well, next time then. I need to get my paperwork finished. See you around, Fish.’ As the two men seemed to part, Kyle’s heart was hammering in his chest and his thoughts and emotions were flying everywhere. What did that mean? Did he know he was right there listening? He quickly swung the curtain back and started walking to the front to see if Oliver had left but as soon as he did, he heard Oliver exclaim behind him. Before he could turn around, Kyle was caught around the waist, turned roughly around, and bent slightly backward as Oliver pulled him close and warmly kissed him. The kiss didn’t last long, but both men felt extremely shaken by it. They were still in the main hallway. People had turned to stare, but neither of them saw anything but the other. It seemed like they stood there staring at each other for an eternity, then Kyle finally grabbed Oliver’s hand and quickly navigated him into what he hoped was an empty private patient’s room. He nearly pushed Oliver inside, scanned the room, and locked the door all in one motion. Oliver stood gaping at him, afraid of what could come next. He watched as Kyle came at him fiercely, backing him all the way against the wall, and pushed his body into him. Their mouths connected and fused together as they moved close. Kyle pulled Oliver’s mouth deeper and deeper into his; his tongue searching for a signal of understanding that this was all he wanted and nothing more. He gave everything of himself to Oliver and Oliver responded with a passion that Kyle hadn’t felt from him before. He grabbed Kyle’s hips, picked him up, and spun him to now be against the wall. He now gave more of himself to Kyle, fiercely, wanting everything of him in return. The need was raw, but the honesty and openness of their hearts was a totally different experience. As far as they could remember there had never been a moment before when both were fully available to each other at the same time. This time they could feel the difference and it was very powerful for each. Oliver pulled himself back. As Kyle looked for him, he reached out to kiss him again as he saw the tears in Oliver’s eyes. After a moment, Kyle looked again and said, ‘You came back to me,’ his voice rough with emotion. ‘Oliver, I love you so much.’ Oliver’s eyes filled up even more. ‘You love me?’ Kyle put his hands to Oliver’s face, wiping the tears away. ‘Yes, Oliver. I love you. You are all I need. Don’t ever leave me again, okay?’ Oliver laughed as the tears continued to stream down his face. ‘I can definitely manage that. I am never letting you go. Never, Kyle. You are the only one for me for the rest of my life. I love you, Kyle.’ Epilogue Kyle sank back into the cushions. The sky was unbelievably beautiful. You could see the entire Milky Way tonight. His comfortable seat was nestled on the front of a white boat in the middle of a large lake. It was a calm and peaceful evening and you could see millions of stars and a few other brighter lights across the water, but he couldn’t get over how quiet and peaceful it was here. It was even better than he dreamed. He was getting a little bit of a chill in the cool night air. He only had swim trunks on. He nestled back further into the cushions to get warm. It wouldn’t be long now…. And it wasn’t. Oliver came around the side of the boat to him with a glass of wine and another lit candle in his hand. He certainly had gone all out, Kyle secretly smiled to himself. ‘You went a bit overboard, don’t you think?’ he teased. ‘Flowers, candles, amazing food, wine. What will you think of next?’ Oliver put the wine and candle down next to Kyle and sat down close to him. ‘Hmmm. I wanted you to have everything and I wanted it all to be perfect.’ Kyle drew his mouth to his. ‘It has been. It has been perfect.’ Oliver had marked the anniversary of their reuniting with this trip. Kyle didn’t remember but he must have told Oliver about his dreams in the days just after they reconciled. Oliver had obviously remembered and had even upped the romance a few notches. Kyle may have teased Oliver about overdoing it a bit, but his heart soared. The boat may have been beautiful due to Oliver’s hard work, but it was nothing in comparison to Oliver himself. Kyle thought Oliver had to be the most beautiful person he had ever known. After awhile, Oliver said to him ‘What do you want to do next?’ Kyle moved to look at him, his heart so full, and said, ‘I would love to do anything with you, Oliver.’ As he moved his mouth and body closer, he said ‘Right now, I want to thank you for being here with me. And then I want to thank you again.’ Oliver smiled and said, ‘My thought exactly.’ |

As I said before, I want to thank all of you so much for supporting this effort of mine. If you haven't heard me say it before, I have never written anything in my life (Well maybe a college paper or two.) It has meant a great deal to me regardless of the results to just be inspired by these two amazing characters and I will miss it. I want to especially thank appleridge and 3395233954 for their support of me and all the other fanfic out there. See you on the boards! You guys are the best! Sandy |
