Thanks again for all your support everyone! You guys are the best! Hope you enjoy the latest. Same ratings and disclaimers. Chapter 9 Kyle lingered on the hotel steps to tie his shoes tighter and then took off like a shotgun. He was tired of chasing down his thoughts and feelings. Right now, he just wanted hard pavement and solitude. He ran for several miles in a bubble of frustration that seemed to push him faster and faster. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to keep his thoughts at bay and his mind turned to the evening’s events again. Not even a hard run like this one could remove the feelings he had being with Oliver last night. His dreams kept lighting on his mind with a vividness that made him think them real. Everything mingled together in a mix of words and images that made his heart melt. He knew that he couldn’t ignore how he felt about Oliver any more. He had avoided it. He had rationalized it. He had pushed it away, but the message was getting clearer and stronger if last night was any indication. He wanted to be with Oliver; heart, body and soul. As he completed his track and began to return to the hotel, he walked back toward the park and sat down. He was cold, but the chill seemed to help clear his mind. Even thought there was no doubt in his heart about wanting to be with Oliver; in his mind, the resistance to being with him was just as strong as ever. It was like a no win situation. The clearer the message got to be with Oliver, the stronger his will became to never go down that road again. Oliver had hurt him so much. More than Kyle was even willing to admit to himself. And that essentially was in between them. How could he forgive and trust a man who treated him like that regardless of what Oliver had to process? What on earth made him think that Oliver would be different now? But he was different. Kyle knew in his heart he was. He just didn’t want to admit it to himself. Anger still licked inside him at the way Oliver tossed him aside. It was hard, really hard to admit that Oliver may have finally learned what he needed to learn and freed himself of his demons. As he tried to be honest with himself, he realized that Oliver was doing exactly what he had always hoped he would. Come back and fight for him. Kyle sighed and stood up. So now what? He still wasn’t ready to do anything about it. He was ready for a shower and hopefully his lecture. Maybe it was a good idea to leave his phone in his locker at the hospital this afternoon. As he came up the front steps he heard the voice of the proprietor inside on the phone, ‘I’m not here right now, but if you leave me your name and number, I’ll get back to you. Yeah, well take the hint and call back later.’ Kyle laughed as she hung up the phone. She looked like she had just gotten out of bed with an eye mask shoved up on her forehead and a leopard print robe thrown on. ‘Another satisfied customer, huh Roxy?’ ‘Eh. It’s too early in the morning to be calling here. Morris says we should make them pay double.’ She turned to look at him, ‘What happened to you? You look terrible.’ Not the greeting Kyle was hoping for, ‘Gee, thanks, Roxy. See ya later.’ He started up the stairs. ‘Whoa, whoa, wait a minute. I gotta tell ya. Your sweater vested hottie came looking for you last night. He looked real worried about you. Said he’d been calling you for hours?’ Roxy was clearly searching but Kyle hesitated. ‘Yeah, he found me.’ ‘And you were……..’ Kyle let her keep guessing. ‘Out.’ She looked confused, ‘Out? You think I don’t know that already! I’m asking you where you were last night.’ He sighed and cracked a smile, ‘I know what you are asking, Roxy.’ He wanted to talk to her and yet, he was cautious. Did he really want to open up a can of worms he was barely able to open himself? She didn’t seem to be willing to take no for an answer. ‘Is something wrong between you and Mr. Gap Ad?’ Kyle didn’t answer. ‘You and Officer Hunk?’ He must have given something away, because she got it. She nearly screeched, ‘Really? You and the Officer are back on? Oh my God! Morris break out the champagne. We gotta celebrate.’ Kyle was torn between confusion at her reaction and trying to keep her voice down. ‘Roxy, keep it down, will you? We don’t want everyone in town to hear.’ She paused in lifting out a bottle of vodka and looked at him, ‘We don’t? Why not?’ As he closed his eyes to think of some excuse, she came up with the answer. ‘You’re not back with him are you? You are just thinking you might like to be.’ He decided that was enough for now. ‘You know what Rox, I think I’ll skip the celebration and head for the showers.’ She wasn’t getting the hint. ‘I know you think that I don’t know all that goes on around here, but you, my friend would be greatly mistaken. I got eyes. I see it all.’ ‘Yeah, such as?’ ‘Such as you’ve been spending all this time with Mr. Khaki Pants and you still don’t look at him the way you do…you know who.’ Kyle lost his fight at that. ‘I don’t…I am not…’ ‘Oh, give me a break, Kyle. Just spill it. Who am I gonna tell?’ He stared at her. ‘Yeah, who are you going to tell, Roxy?’ ‘Nobody! My lips are sealed. I swear. Morris swears too. Right, Morris? Right! Now spill.’ He actually looked to see if she had crossed any fingers in this bargain, then sighed and said, ‘Okay fine, here’s the truth. Oliver has been on my mind a bit too much lately. So much, that I went to Rodi’s and got tanked last night, and what happens, they call the cops and I end up with Oliver taking me home.’ She started to shriek again and he cut her off. ‘Hold on. Nothing happened...really. We re-connected a bit,’ he winced at the understatement, ‘and he helped me get into my place. Then Nick showed up looking for me.’ She was all confusion, ‘Whaa? That’s it?’ He took a deep breath, ‘Well, okay. Oliver told me he wants to fight to get me back.’ He paused again, ‘There’s a bit more…’ ‘I knew it! Such as?’ ‘I sorta came on to him a couple of times. I was drunk.’ She practically was beaming, ‘Mmmm. Sounds delicious. You know, I woulda done the same thing. Who wouldn’t? He’s saying “trust me, love me” and you say, yeah baby! In a heartbeat.’ Kyle cracked a smile but he started to want to be alone. He started to get up. ‘I gotta go get a shower and get to class, Roxy.’ She quickly rose too. ‘Wait a minute. So what are you gonna do? You’re gonna give the Officer another chance?’ Kyle looked at her. ‘I don’t know, Roxy. I don’t know what to do.’ She gave him a huge smile of encouragement. ‘Well I know exactly what to do. First off, you go get that man and never let him go. And if you happen to keep seeing the other one while you are, shall we say re-connecting with the guy, so be it. What’s wrong with a little of seeing the two of them at once? Yeah. It always worked for me. Made them all work a little harder, if you know what I mean.’ |

I had such a good time writing this chapter I had to post it right away. Hope you all enjoy it too. Chapter 10 Oliver didn’t hear from Kyle till late afternoon of the following day. His nerves were shot but he was grateful that Kyle didn’t leave it longer. Now his mind went into overdrive about what Kyle might say. He tried desperately to focus on other things but in his mind, he kept re-living different parts of the evening last night. The night had given him hope, but today, he was determined to be realistic. He had done a lot of damage and Kyle was still hesitant. He understood he had a lot to make up for and he was determined to do it, no matter what, he thought. He was determined to get Kyle back no matter what the time frame was. He went to the door around 6 pm to answer it and Kyle was standing before him. His eyes sparkled slightly but he looked worn out. He hadn’t seemed to have recovered from his late evening and didn’t seem overly excited to be there. Oliver’s heart sunk a bit, but not for long. ‘Hey, I’ve made something to eat. Are you hungry?’ Kyle walked in the room and turned to him quizzically, ‘You cooked?’ Oliver smiled and nodded. ‘Yeah, I did. And I’m not half bad honestly. My roommates are big fans.’ Kyle looked around. ‘Not partaking this evening, I see.’ Oliver walked around the counter to continue his preparations. ‘Ah, no. They are out at Capricorn tonight for a fund raiser, but I made plenty for leftovers.’ Kyle was impressed in spite of himself. ‘So what’s all this? ‘Oliver looked thrilled to be showing him. ‘I made a pepper crusted sirloin, roasted potatoes, a salad with 1000 island dressing and I bought an apple pie for dessert.’ Kyle’s heart did a little dance, but he said evenly, ‘That sounds great. I wasn’t expecting to eat now, but…’ Oliver jerked his head up but calmly said, ‘Well, I was hoping you might stay to eat, but if you have other plans, it’s okay.’ Kyle smiled again to himself. He had to admit Oliver was working hard to up the ante. He shrugged, ‘No that’s okay. I can stay for a bit. I’m starving.’ And as Kyle sat down at the bar, he gave Oliver that amazing grin that made him feel like he’d definitely hit this one out of the park. As they ate, the old banter came back to life for the first time in a long time. They hadn’t just sat and talked about anything for many years. It was like a favorite old record being played again for the first time in a long time. It was hard to say who was having the better time. Oliver’s dinner was praised and laughed at and thought to be better than of his other efforts that Kyle remembered. ‘Spaghetti-Os and Captain Crunch. That’s what I remember.’ Oliver laughed, ‘That was only freshman and sophomore year. Junior year, I started to make sandwiches; peanut butter and jelly, bologna and cheese. A culinary master in the making.’ ‘Well, I never would have guessed that you would master this. It was excellent, Oliver. Really good.’ Oliver’s face lit up, ‘Thanks. I’m glad you liked it.’ His insides were squirming. He felt all of Kyle’s praise and yet nothing else had come up. ‘You want anything else?’ He opened the fridge. ‘Not a whole lot more in there.’ He was starting to get nervous and Kyle seemed to be feeling his distress too. ‘Ah, no thanks. I need to be headed out anyway.’ Oliver turned sharply. ‘Really, I was hoping you would hang out for a bit.’ Kyle had gotten up. Oliver was choking down his nerves. Here’s it comes, he thought. ‘Look, Oliver. I came here tonight to …get a handle on things. I care about you and last night was a bit of an eye opener for me, but I …’ Oliver’s stomach sunk. He tried to breathe and be calm. ‘I think maybe we should just hang out a bit more...see what happens next.’ See how we work together without denial or alcohol, he thought to himself. ‘I am sorry Oliver. That’s the best I can do right now.’ Oliver didn’t let that deter him in the least. ‘I understand. You want time. Time to figure out what is best for you.’ Decide if you can trust me, Oliver added in his head. ‘I can do that. I can show you what you want is right in front of you.’ Kyle’s heart bumped up a notch. ‘You understand that I’m not committing to you or anything. That I am still seeing Nick.’ Oliver let nothing but calm escape him, ‘I understand that in time you will see that I am everything you need and if you need that time to discover that, it’s completely fine with me.’ Kyle’s heart kicked up another notch. ‘You don’t care that I am seeing Nick.’ Oliver smirked and shrugged, ‘Well, I wouldn’t say that I don’t care. Far from it.’ Oliver paused a minute debating whether to ask, but he said, ‘Will he know that we are ….getting together occasionally or not?’ Kyle looked uncomfortable. ‘How you’d feel about it?’ Oliver thought a minute and decided to be honest, ‘In this situation, I would prefer a straight forward fight.’ Kyle looked amazed as Oliver continued, ‘But I am willing to do whatever it takes to be with you.’ Knowing Kyle as he did, Oliver felt sure Kyle would be completely up front about his decisions, and hopefully the news that Oliver was now in the picture would completely scare Nick off. Perfect, he thought. He was also dying to know if anyone, particularly Nick, was going to have sex in this arrangement, but he didn’t dare. He thought things were going well so far. He wasn’t crazy about Kyle’s decision to continue to date Nick, but Kyle had cracked the door open for the two of them and the hope stepped up and roared in his chest. Kyle moved to the door. ‘I’ll call you tomorrow.’ Oliver quickly came around to the door before Kyle could reach it. ‘Sounds good,’ he said. As Kyle went to open the door, Oliver moved like he would open it for him first, but instead took the opportunity of getting close to him, sweeping Kyle up with his other arm, and kissing him. Kyle was surprised to say the least, and his shock grew from there. Oliver gave him one of the most passionate kisses he had ever remembered in his lifetime and then pulled back. Kyle was absolutely shell-shocked. Oliver gave him a huge grin. ‘Well, have a nice evening. Talk to you tomorrow.’ Oliver opened the door for Kyle, who nearly ran into the door jamb as he walked out. He could barely say good-bye. Oliver continued to grin to himself as he closed the door. If his knees were shaky after that kiss, he felt pretty satisfied that Kyle was barely able to walk past the door. Take that Nick! Kyle stood outside Oliver’s door for a full minute, long enough to hear Oliver humming to himself happily inside. He wondered if he would be able to walk down the hall. Damn, Oliver was turning him into putty before he’d even gotten a chance to decide if seeing Oliver was something he really wanted to do. He shook his head to clear it and tried to take a step forward. Maybe Roxy was right. Maybe they would work harder. If the last two nights were any indication, Oliver was stepping up in a big way to win him back. Now he had to face Nick. This could be a bit more challenging, he thought. He hadn’t really talked to him today or last night for that matter. It would be a difficult conversation but he hoped Nick would stick around. It seemed like they had barely begun to get to know each other but, as they had, Kyle was drawn to him more and more. From the beginning, he had tried not to compare Nick and Oliver; but there were certain things always came up in his mind. For one, Nick was so powerful and commanding in every aspect of their relationship. With Oliver, he thought it was more balanced. Although Oliver seemed to be learning some new power moves, Kyle smiled to himself. As he left Oliver’s building, he called Nick to tell him he was on his way.
