I couldn't help but share this chapter early. Hope you like it. I am really enjoying writing it. Chapter 3 There had been no communication since Oliver saw Kyle and Nick at the rally. To be honest, he really didn’t expect any. He wanted to call Kyle, but he knew it was better to just leave it alone. He had tried. He wanted to make things right with Kyle, but maybe it wasn’t possible. He decided he’d better go back to focusing on himself for the time being. He wondered whether he had really forgiven himself for what he did to Kyle in college...and since. He wasn’t sure. Essentially, he needed to move forward in his life and he needed to let go of how he acted in order to do that. Therefore, he had to forgive himself. And in a sense, it wasn’t that hard. He felt like a different person now. He saw his life from such a different perspective that he could hardly believe he was the same person. But when he thought about the people he hurt, that was a completely different story. Especially Kyle. He hurt Kyle worse than he’d hurt anyone else and he could barely think about it. But if he wanted Kyle to forgive him, didn’t he need to do the same for himself? He was walking to work through Angel’s Square. The air was crisp and clear. The leaves were starting to change. It was so beautiful in Landview this time of year. As he was walking through, he thought he heard his name. He stopped and looked around and spotted Kyle on one of the benches. He had a to-go cup of coffee in his hand and his text books next to him on the bench. He looked so good, not shaven and bundled up against the chill. Oliver stopped in his tracks, unsure of what to do next. Kyle motioned him over. ‘Come on and sit down for a few. Are you headed to work?’ Oliver slowly walked up to the bench. ‘Yeah, what are you up to this morning?’ Kyle squinted against the sun, putting a hand to his eyes. ‘I have a class in a bit and was looking over a few notes beforehand. Will you sit down so I can see you?’ Oliver wiped his hands on his pant legs and said ‘Sure’ as he sat down. ‘How are things with you? Did you and Nick see those news stories about Dorian the other night? She is really an interesting…’ Kyle cut across him. ‘I don’t want to talk about Dorian. I wanted to talk to you about…something. Okay?’ Oliver looked down at his feet and said ‘Sure. Go ahead.’ Kyle took a deep breath. ‘I don’t like reliving those moments in college when we split up, okay? I don’t. I don’t, I didn’t, want to revisit them, but in a way, I thought you deserved it, that we both deserved it. I didn’t want to look at it because I didn’t want to see what happened to ...us afterwards. The way we left it and the way we dealt with it afterwards. Not a whole lot of good came from that. And I couldn’t see that a whole lot of good would come from looking at it again. Understand? I just wanted to move on, I still do. But I can see where you would like me to understand why you did the things you did and ...forgive them. I am doing that and I am seeing it in a better light, I think, so I just wanted you to know that.’ Kyle abruptly tapered out . Oliver couldn’t think of anything to say to any of this. He continued to stare at his shoes. Kyle paused a minute and then slowly said, ‘You know, I think that I just wasn’t willing to let you off the hook because then I would have to accept where we are now. Accept that things are different and we’re not together anymore.’ Oliver’s heart surged back into his chest. He slowly looked at Kyle. Kyle looked away before their eyes connected and downed the rest his coffee. He looked like he was getting ready to leave. Oliver turned his body more toward Kyle and said, ‘Well I guess that’s two of us. I didn’t want to see that either and seeing you and Nick together the other day was just another reminder of all I have done. But I want to you to know something. First, I am grateful that you are willing to try to forgive me. I am amazed that you would even attempt it. Secondly, I am trying to do the same for myself because I think we both deserve to let go of the pain and move on. And lastly, I want you to know….’ He reached out to touch Kyle’s face and turned him toward him. ‘How much I still love you, Kyle. I have never stopped. I love you.’ He brushed the side of his face with his hand. ‘I love you.’ He started drawing Kyle closer to him. ‘I love you, Kyle.’ Kyle allowed himself to be drawn in. He knew Oliver loved him, but he hadn’t seen this open, dare he say romantic Oliver since college. His heart drew itself straight to Oliver. He couldn’t resist it. Their lips met and softly melted together. It was so slow and effortless as they started to come closer together searching for more. Oliver tenderly cupped Kyle’s face and was somewhat surprised to feel Kyle reach out for him, moving them even closer together. Oliver urged Kyle’s mouth open and he was already there. The kiss grew more impatient, more urgent as they folded themselves into each other’s arms. Suddenly a young kid on a skateboard rocketed by their bench and jolted them both back to the park. They had parted quickly with surprise, but Oliver had unconsciously moved Kyle even closer to him to protect him from the unknown source of the noise. Kyle could feel how quickly Oliver had responded and how his heart beat so quickly in his chest. He wanted to stay right there in that pocket forever, but he didn’t. He wouldn’t allow himself. He slowly pushed back searching for stable ground outside the ring of Oliver’s arms. Oliver looked for his eyes, but they didn’t reach his. Kyle started to pull farther away. He reached to the arm of the bench to support himself. ‘I can’t do this’, he said. ‘Kyle.’ Oliver held him there and turned him to look deep into his eyes. ‘You know we belong together. I just needed to say it and to show you that I am here. I am ready when you are. You know. I know you know. You were waiting for me. Now I’m ready. You are meant to be with me. Please. Be with me. ‘‘I can’t,’ Kyle repeated. ‘I’m just, not…’ He seemed unsteady as he started to get up to leave, but Oliver held him down. ‘What? What is it? You don’t forgive me or is it that you don’t trust me?’ Kyle looked at him then. ‘Maybe that’s it. I don’t know if I can do that again’, he said fiercely. ‘I’ve got to go.’ Oliver caught his hand as Kyle got to his feet and started to walk past him. ‘Please, just remember what I said.’ Kyle looked at him.’ But I already know you love me Oliver. I know you do. But that’s not enough right now, I guess. I need to go’. With that, Oliver let go of his hand and watched Kyle walk as quickly as he could out of sight. |

Here's the next chapter. Thanks so much for your comments. It's great to hear what you think. Chapter 4 There wasn’t a moment when he hadn’t known that Oliver loved him. In fact, that’s what screwed him up for so long. He felt that if he had just been able to get Oliver to move past his fear then they would have been happy. They would have been together. But he couldn’t do it, no, Kyle thought fiercely. He just couldn’t stand up for me for once and see what I needed. That’s not fair, he told himself quickly. Whoever in that much pain could see what I needed? The whole situation sucked and now he had moved on with Nick. He had made decisions to move away from Oliver. And what happens, Oliver finally figures it out. Damn it. He was walking so quickly and so blindly that he had little idea of what was around him. Unconsciously he found himself at school, early for his class. He was wondering if he should bag it entirely. His attention was clearly somewhere else. He threw his books and bag down on the last row of desks and sunk into a chair. No one was there to see him furiously wipe away tears of frustration and disappointment. He just wasn’t ready for this. He kept thinking that he was over this, that it was no big deal and then Oliver would throw him another curve ball. He suddenly thought of how tender Oliver was today. His heart ached as he rubbed his hands over his eyes and through his hair. So beautiful. It was so beautiful he couldn’t resist him, but it couldn’t happen again. Seriously. It could not happen again. He grabbed his notes and books as others started filing their way into the classroom. He had sat toward the back hoping that he wouldn’t be bothered. Unfortunately, he found himself accosted by a young woman who wanted to know if he had the notes from the last lecture and could she take a look. He moved them over to her as she sat down next to him. ‘Hi, I’m Sharon. Thanks for the notes.’ ‘Kyle. No problem.’ He sunk farther down in his chair. She said, ‘I hope you don’t mind me asking, but are you alright?’ Kyle tried to move his attention to her and get past all he was feeling. ‘Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks for asking. I just had one of those mornings you know.’ She gave him a huge smile and said, ‘Yeah, I understand. Sometimes the world just has a way of showing you the writing on the wall.’ When he looked blank, she said, ’ You know, of getting you to pay attention. Happens to me all the time. Especially when I don’t want it to.’ Kyle gave her a curious look. Was she a psycho or a psychic? ‘No, I guess I don’t understand. What do you mean?’ She looked up from the notes and smiled again. ‘ Well, I’m just assuming you had one of those mornings where you plan it all out that things are going to go one way and they go a completely different way. Then you debate with yourself for awhile which was you were supposed to go.’ She laughed, ‘To me, it’s like God or whatever is tapping you on the shoulder saying , Ehh hello, take a look over here. You should be listening to this and once you do, you stop struggling, you know.’ Kyle looked at her and looked. ‘Ah, I guess I have never, ever, thought of it that way. I mean I guess lose my keys or something occasionally. I don’t expect every day, what would you call it, miracles? ‘She looked up again, ‘Well in a way, I guess it is a tiny miracle. I’m just saying that life has a way of pointing you in the right direction if you listen. Has that never, ever happened to you?’ He looked stumped. ‘I guess not that I know of and if it has happened now, I’m still, what did you say, in the not listening phase.’ She looked up again and smiled even wider. ‘Then you’d better expect the message to get louder and louder until you do. ' Oliver sat on the park bench for the longest time. What did I just do?, he thought. I can’t believe I am that stupid to hurt him again. He doesn’t deserve it. He’s right. He should just move on, move on from me. Eventually he slowly got to his feet and continued on to the station, his thoughts continuing to focus on Kyle. For a moment, just for a moment, I thought he would come back to me, but now…, now I guess everything is worse. Lucky for him things were so busy at the station; he didn’t have time to focus on Kyle for long. But he did take a moment to see if Layla was free for lunch. ‘Do you mind taking a break with me at the Buenos Dias? Is Christian there today?’ It was easy for her to know when Oliver needed a show of support. ‘No problem. Let me know when you are ready to go, okay?’ As they headed out, thoughts of Kyle immediately returned. ‘What a busy today, huh?’, he said. ‘Yeah, I’m amazed I could get off the phone for two seconds to go to lunch with you,’ she laughed. ‘I really can hardly wait till the election is over. So much drama.’ His laugh sounded a bit hollow. ‘Yeah. Exactly.’ ‘What’s going on Oliver?’ ‘Nothing really, I just wanted to ask a friend to lunch. Anything wrong with that?’ he teased. ‘Just wanted to focus on something else besides me, like my great roommates. Sound good?’ ‘Sure’ she said simply, knowing that there was something more, a whole lot more of something. They walked in to see Christian behind the counter and waved a hello. Layla still had no clue how much Christian cared about her, but Oliver was sure that it was only a matter of time, before his roommates were a couple. Today the thought made him happy and sad at the same time. Christian walked over. ‘Hey, you two. The police department doesn’t need you for a few minutes, I see. What are you having?’ They ordered and Christian headed back to the kitchen. ‘Oliver, what’s up? You look so sad. Did something happen today? Just tell me.’ Oliver shook his head. ‘I just don’t think I can take hurting one more person I love, you know. What’s wrong with me that everyone gets hurt when I’m around? You know what, don’t answer that. I’m ashamed to even be saying this to you of all people.’ He sighed and said, ‘I saw Kyle today.’ Layla smiled slightly and said, ‘That’s great. Isn’t it? You wanted to talk to him right?’ ‘Yeah, I talked to him alright. Actually, he talked to me, said he was trying to forgive me, and what do I do, I sped it up too fast and told him I love him.’ Layla grinned, ‘But that’s great, Oliver. He needed to know you do.’ But watching him, her grin receded. ‘He didn’t take it well?’ Christian walked back with their food and sat down with them next to Layla. Grabbing a fry, he said, ‘What did I miss?’ ‘Oliver told Kyle that he loves him today.’ ‘That’s fantastic. Right?’ Oliver shifted in his seat,’ Well it was almost fantastic. I kissed him and it was fantastic and then it wasn’t at all. He took off and told me it wasn’t enough for him. That he already knew I loved him.’ They were all silent for a minute. Christian broke it, ‘Sorry man. I’m really sorry. I know he cares about you. I know he does.’ Oliver sighed, ‘Yeah, I think he does too, but I’ve hurt him so bad I don’t think it makes a difference.’ Layla was searching for a bright side and the guys both knew it. ‘Just don’t even try, Layla.’ Oliver said, ‘I don’t think there is any silver lining in this one.’ Edited by sporter, Sep 28 2009, 12:57 PM.
