But eating too many of them can make one fatter and slower....Just as too many stored website cookies can make your computer fatter and slower. Most websites you visit set cookies on your computer, some are harmless, even helpful... some are annoying, while others can be downright dangerous. You can set your browser to reject all cookies, but many websites require you to accept their cookies or you will be blocked from that website. Helpful cookies remember your login information for your email sites, homepages and whatever, saving you from having to log in every time you want to visit that site. Many however contain adware or spyware that at best slow your internet connection and at worst send your personal information to people who shouldn't have it. Depending on your browser there are different methods of manually deleting the bad cookies while keeping the helpful ones, but that is time consuming and not a whole lot of fun. At any rate you should set your browser to reject third party cookies....In Internet explorer click tools, then from the drop down box click Internet Options then the "Privacy" tab. Move the slider to Medium or Medium High. This will block many but not all "bad" cookies. There is a free program that I use and highly recommend that does a number of useful things, one of those things being a function that allows you to save the cookies that log you on to your favorite websites and email programs while allowing you to delete all those hundreds of useless and even harmful cookies in one fell swoop... It is called Ccleaner and can be downloaded free from here: http://www.ccleaner.com/ After you install the program you have the option to set it to delete browsing history, temp files and many other unnecessary files from your computer....more on this later For now uncheck eveything you're not sure about then check the box labeled "cookies". Then click on the box labeled "Options" then "Cookies". You will notice two boxes...one labeled "Cookies To Delete" on the left and another labeled "Cookies To Keep" on the right. You can now move the helpful cookies, the one's that let you automatically log you on to your favorite sites such as Yahoo, MSN, Live, AOL and etcetera from the left box "Cookies To Delete" to the right box "Cookies To Keep" by clicking on the ones you wish to save then clicking the arrow. Then simply click the "Cleaner" Icon , click "Analyze" then " Run Cleaner". All those bad cookies will be tossed and you should see a real improvement in surfing speed.
