The most useful and important utility is you...The way in which you use your computer and surf the internet in large part determines the dangers of inadvertently installing a computer virus or malware on your machine. There are many anti-virus, firewalls and the like, many of them free, that will "help" keep your computer running smoothly... Several suggestions will follow.

But just by using a little common sense one can avoid a lot of trouble.

NEVER open an e-mail attachment from an unknown source. And even if you know the sender you should scan the attachment before opening it, many viruses replicate themselves by sending themselves to everyone in one's contacts list (Many e-mail programs now scan for viruses in attachments automatically).

When downloading programs. shareware, screensavers , backgrounds or peer to peer downloads ALWAYS save to disk and scan with a good antivirus before opening and / or installing.

Antivirus programs must be kept up to date. Updates are included automatically in any decent antivirus program, make sure automatic updates are turned on, or religiously manually update the program.

If money is an issue (and when isn't it) there are several good free anti-virus programs available.

I especially like Avast, it does a very good job and free is about as cheap as it gets.

Also: Avira AntiVir Personal

And: AVG Anti-Virus

All these are free...
