[Origional Story] Artificial
Spoiler: click to toggle The laboratory was as sterile and white as always, it’s owner, a man of science, hooked up his creation, an android boy whose likeness to the scientist surely showed to all who saw the two, into a pod like machine that was created for the purpose of charging him so that he could continue to “live”.
-If “life” is too much to ask for, then just let me “be”.-
One would swear that they were of the same blood if it were not for the panels of metal that were on the smaller one’s form. The key difference was that one aged with every passing day, and the other was trapped in an eternally youthful form.
-How I wish I could share my “forever” with you.- -But maybe it is better that way- -You already bear the pain of the past that I do not have- -So let us simply share our “now”-
The little android child stared at the scientist with the same artificial shine in it’s blue eyes, the same manufactured smile that was always painted onto it’s face when the scientist was around.
-I smile because I am happy to see you- They were always together; as the man worked the child simply watched and did his best to help, as the man slept the boy who had no need for such things cleaned and maintained the laboratory. This is how things were for a very long time.
-Because I want to “be” with you.-
The scientist couldn’t handle it anymore. The little abomination that he created with his own hands haunted him every day.
-But that is too much for someone like me to ask for isn’t it?-
“Brother, is something wrong?” The scientist hated that artificial tone speaking to him in such a way. That item could never be his brother. That monster could never love, he knew that fact best, he created it. How dare something with no true self speak to him with feigned concern!
-I know what is wrong. I can never replace him as you had hoped.-
The scientist smiled gently and ruffled the messy black hair that was made to feel and look the same as his brother’s. His brother that died of a disease that’s cure was found not long after he died.
-Can’t I just be me? Can you love me for who I am?-
“Nothing is wrong. I am just a little tired. I was up all night making a breakthrough.” He put in the final cord, this action causing the boy to gasp, as though the action actually could cause him discomfort.
-Your face twists into one of hate between your smiles-
He walked to the control panel that sat in the middle of the bare room, looking at them with affection. This would free him forever. “I have made adjustments in the machinery to make it so that you will be able to tolerate a charge of a higher power setting. It will mean that you won’t have to be charged as often.”
-You are lying to me-
“That is great. Those cords really hurt when they are attached.” The scientist was disgusted down to his bones. How dare it speak as if it knew pain! He had lost everything, and had failed to regain it with the creation of this being.
-You have always felt this pain, whereas I won’t for much longer.-
“Brother?”
-Let my last words to you carry my feelings-
“Yes?”
The scientist flipped the switch. The boy shorted out before he was ever able to speak his words of love and truth to his creator and brother. -I love you- -Even if we were both fake- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The scientist died alone, his “now” ended shortly after he had flipped the switch to end his companion’s. He wrote one last letter to anyone who might find it before he died. A hundred years later a lightning blot hit the laboratory, giving a pair of blue eyes long forgotten by the world the ability to open again.
-If what you wanted was life from death-
His cords broke from the force of the shock that woke him from his endless sleep. This would be his last charge. The boy did not mind. He was not expecting to wake at all.
-Then what is life from nothingness to you?-
He looked about the room. It was bare as always, but the white of the walls had greyed to almost a black. He walked forward, wondering if the scientist had moved to a different laboratory after he realsed himself from his pain. His eyes caught sight of a paper sitting on the panel. He picked it up and saw that it was his creator’s handwriting.
The “Artificial Miracle” Project Final log entry I started this project many years ago, trying to find a way to create a “miracle” of science, wanting to see if it was possible to re-create life. I found that such an idea was an idea for fools.
-So I was a failure in the end. My words did not reach him-
It is not possible to bring back the dead. But it is possible to create new life. At the time I did not realise it but I was able to create a whole new person, I succeeded at creating a soul.
-Why am I shaking? Why am I crying?-
This child here is my brother, not by blood but through bond. I killed him myself with my misguided hate. I can only hope that he will forgive me. I fixed him as much as I could but...there was no way to fully repair him without deleting all of his memories. It may be selfish, by not repairing him, I took away his “forever”, just to save the “now” that we shared.
-Is this the “miracle” you always spoke of?-
The power here is broken and I cannot reach the city with my body in this state. I am too old. My “now” is ending. Please revive him, even if he will only be able to live for just a while more, I want him to know how I feel.-Though my words could not possibly reach you- I love you, even if we are both fake.
The android spent the last hours of his life doing something he had never done before. He was crying tears of joy, something that should be impossible for him. His last words were “Thank you.”
