DRAGON BREEDS
Note: Dragons can have a variety of traits, so some might look like a mix of two different breeds, but they must have the basic traits of their Breed. So a Common Drake cannot be long and skinny like a Waveskimmer, and a Waveskimmer cannot be heavy-set and squat like a Spineback.
All measurements are an average of the Breed. Some can be larger and some can be smaller. Height is measured to the shoulder and length from chest to tail.
Common Drake (Draconis Communis) Draconis Communis, also known as the Common Drake, is often believed to be the base of the different Breeds of Dragons within Kaldanis. They are the most abundant Breed, being generalists when it comes to habitat and hunting styles. They are tall, about twice the size of a fully grown man, with strong, arching necks that supports a head similar to a Theropod. Their jaws are filled with serrated teeth, which have a combination of crocodilian and mammalian characteristics. Most Common Drakes only sport one set of horns with a frill of spikes around their jaws, though some may have more horns and some may have none. They sport a pair of hand-like wings, each with four fingers and a thumb-claw. Common Drakes are somewhat of your all-purpose Dragons, being able to carry a Rider into battle or help around with menial tasks like moving heavy objects, being used as transportation, shipping objects from one place to another, or even be used as messengers. Height: 7-13 Feet Length: 20-29 Feet
Furdrake (Draconis Terdecursus) Draconis Terdecursus, or the Furdrake, is often mistaken for a furry Common Drake. However, upon closer examination it is clear that they are very different. Fur drakes have a delicate build to their skulls, longer necks, and thinner bodies. Occasionally they are short and squat, though they are usually tall and elegant. Furdrakes are roughly the same size as Common Drakes and are just as abundant. Their wings are four-fingered and hand-like, though the base is covered in fur and some individuals may have fur extending down the arm and even the fingers. They are capable of a wide variety of jobs, though they usually avoid work in hot and arid climates. Their fur can be trimmed to give them more comfort in the heat, though it's impossible to completely shave them since the fur grows between scute-like scales. Height: 7- Feet Length: 20-29 Feet
Swiftwing (Draconis Armopennae) Swiftwings are the speed demons of the Draconic Kingdom. They are aerodynamic and strong, possessing a long and stiff tail to provide excellent balance while running. They are also equipped with a pair of narrow wings, making them some of the fastest fliers in Kaldanis. They are often used as messengers, or even bet on during races. Unfortunately the Swiftwing lacks the endurance to stay in the air for long, though they have excellent stamina on the ground. Their wings are not made to sustain them in the air for long, as they consist of only one wing-finger and occasionally an elbow spine that the wing membrane attaches to, though this is not always present. Their strong bodies allow them to carry a Rider though for nearly as far as they could without a Rider on the ground, making them excellent mounts for those who have a need for speed! Height: 9-12 Feet Length: 29-37 Feet
Spineback (Draconis Sepicheosa) The only word that can describe a Spineback would be Tank. They arere huge and hulking beasts, standing at least 3 times the height of a fully grown man. Their appearance can be rather intimidating, with their bodies covered in large ridges. Their tails are excellent weapons since they are often a mass of dense bone. When a Spineback charges there is almost no stopping it, and all but the strongest of barricades will crumble beneath their feet. For being such large beasts Spinebacks have a relatively low metabolism, they do not need to eat as much as some of the other breeds. They are often used to pull heavy carts or used as battering rams during wars. They are so large that they have no use for flight, and over the course of time their wings have become small and useless. Some may even have no wings at all. A very rare few individuals have full sized wings, and they are only capable of short glides from high point A to low point B. Height: 9-25 Feet Length: 24-67 Feet
Waveskimmer (Draconis Narefluctus) Waveskimmers are the Sea-Dragons of Kaldanis. They are thin, noodle-like, and covered in different frills and fins all over their body. Some have long, whip-like tendrils sprouting from their body that are bio-luminescent, while others lack these tendrils completely. Their heads are reminiscent of both a crocodile and a prehistoric raptor, and while most may appear "ugly" because of their protruding teeth a few have a sleeker, more refined design to their head and face. Waveskimmers do not have wings so much as they have webbed spines sprouting from their back and shoulders. They are not the best of fliers but swimming is an entirely different matter. They swim a lot like a fish, with a gentle side to side motion of their body, though some swim more like whales, and their wings are used more for balance and turning in the water than actual swimming. Their wings are very useful as paddles when the Waveskimmer simply wants to drift along the surface in an ocean current. They are adaptable to both fresh water and salt water, though they prefer warm fresh water to cold salt any-day. Much like a fish they have a thin layer of scales, though they have a thick later of hide beneath the scales that prevents them from loosing water, though they'd rather not leave the water for more than an hour or two at a time. It is not uncommon to see a sailor or a fisherman bonded to a Waveskimmer. They are very handy when it comes to chasing fish into nets or catching the larger and more dangerous delicacies that the oceans have to offer. Height: 6-9 Feet Length: 49-73 Feet

DRAGON BONDING
The bond between a Dragon and a Rider is the most beautiful thing that can ever be witnessed, or even felt. For a creature so beautiful and terrifying, they have an amazing effect upon the world around them. For the Rider of a Dragon, it is as if they can do anything, so long as their counterpart is there beside them. The bonding of a dragon is not by choice of the person. The Dragon Chooses its Rider. Upon birth of a Dragon, unless it is wild, the hatchling will seek out its "Soul Mate" Or Rider. With it's rider, the hatchling can truly grow into its potential, but without it's rider... It will have little chance of survival.
The bond can be broken, severed, or destroyed. To kill either the rider or the Dragon, will send the other spiraling into depression, and the remainder of the pair will have a hard time surviving without their other half. For a Dragon and a Rider indeed share a soul. Bonded together to survive and grow with each other, a broken bond is like having a lung torn out. You cannot survive long without it.
Dragons speak mentally to their riders, and only to their riders. In order to communicate with other Humans or Dragons they must learn Common (spoken by most Humans) or speak to humans that know Draconic (native Dragon language, instinctively known by Dragons). In cases of mute Dragons, which is not very common but can happen during the hatchling age, or even the developing age, the Dragon will be able to communicate to others telepathically. This takes much practice though, and most are only able to communicate through images, emotions, and simple words. It is a crude way of mute communication, and it can be confusing at times as well.

BREEDING SEASONS
The majority of Dragon Breeding (flights), occurs during the early spring to early summer. The growth of new life and the warm sun stimulates females to go into estrus, and once in estrus a female will trumpet her challenge to all male Dragons in the area. Male Dragons have an instinctual compulsion to chase, though older Dragons can ignore it with mental training.
Flights usually consist of a bit of posturing and threatening by the males, but it doesn't take long for the female to launch herself into the air. The males will quickly follow as she leads them on a merry chase across the skies. Eventually she will choose the best fit male to win, or the only male remaining if all the others dropped out of the chase.
After a flight a female will remain egg heavy for about three weeks, then after she lays her eggs about four weeks later they will hatch.

HIERARCHY A group of Dragons that live and sleep together is called a Creche, and can be formed of multiple males, females, and young. Riders are often included in these Creches and hold the same respect as their bonded partner. Creche Hierarchy is a female run society, they are held in high regard because of their ability to lay eggs and bring new life into the world. The leading female of the Creche is called the Matriarch, and she is usually the oldest female in the Creche or the first to rise when the previous Matriarch passes away. Whatever she says goes, though if her mate, the Patriarch, has a conflicting view then his opinion will be considered, as he has just as much power as the Matriarch does. In wild Dragon societies both the Matriarch position and the Patriarch position can be challenged for, and this is usually when a female, or a male, is jealous of the others mate and wishes to take that Dragon for their own mate. In societies that involve Riders, however, fighting for the Matriarch or Patriatch position is highly frowned upon, as the death of a Dragon is much like shattering the soul of their Rider.
The Daughters are usually from the first clutch of the Leading Pair, and are usually the first three females to hatch. This means that with each new Creche Matriarch comes a new group of Daughters, and they are used as advisers to the Creche Leaders. They demand deep respect from the rest of the Creche, though when push comes to shove the Matriarch won't protect them from the retaliation of another Dragon.
Within wild Dragon Creches the pecking order of the Dragons vary from Creche to Creche, and it usually has no set ranking order. It all depends on the relationships between the Dragons within the Creche. However, in a Rider-based Society this jumbled mix is broken down into a more orderly and simple fashion. In most Rider-based Creches there are two or three Wings of Dragons. Each Wing is led by a Flight Leader, which helps keep order within his/her own Wing. Each Flight Leader has a Flight Adviser, who helps the Flight Leader with their duties. Then the Dragons and Riders within a Wing are ranked based on their skill and experience level.
Each Wing is usually based off a certain job, so, for example, a Wing of Messengers will most likely be composed of mostly Swiftwings and Common Drakes, while a Wing based of transportation services would most likely be comprised of Spinebacks and Common/Fur Drakes. Waveskimmers are usually in a class all their own, as they function best in water, though they will occasionally be seen in a different line of work.

ELEMENT AFFINITY Dragons have a wide range of elements that they can be connected with, ranging from the common elements of Wind, Water, Fire, and Earth to more complex ones such as Frost, Energy, Volcanic, and many others. The more complex elements are rarer than the four base elements and are a combination of two base elements. The exact nature of each element and how it manifests itself in a Dragon varies from individual to individual, but all can be classified, and can learn other magics within their connected element.
There are rumors of Dragons with more than 2 elements at their disposal, but so far none of hatched in the current times, and most people dismiss these rumors as fantasy tales.
All Dragons can learn to channel energy to other places in their body other than their Breath Weapon, but this takes time and practice. For example, a Fire Dragon could learn to release their fire magic around their claws instead of out their mouth, creating a glove of fire that burns as well as scratches. Dragons can also have a wide variety of Breath weapons so long as they fit within their Element.
All Dragons hatch with an elemental rune somewhere on their body. The exact color, size, and placement varies from Dragon to Dragon, but the rune always reflects the element they are tied to.
Note: Dragons do not always follow the following personality guidelines, as they are just that, guidelines.
Base Elements
Earth: Those with the affinity for Earth are usually self-centered and down to earth. They tend to make good, stead-fast leaders and advisers and they often like to take their time with things. Earth provides Dragons with control over anything you could classify as rocks or dirt. Some are powerful enough to cause earthquakes, others can cause rock falls. The breath weapon of an Earth varies, some launch huge boulders and others spray dust particles so fine that it slices your lungs to pieces.
Air: Air Dragons are often aloof and explorative. It's hard to keep them centered on a single project and they have a habit of starting more projects than they can finish. Air allows Dragons to control the wind and clouds, and the strongest might start tornadoes or suck the air out of a room. Breath Weapons of Airs usually involves a huge blast of either super-cooled or super-heated air, though some can manipulate it into piercing sickles of air sharp enough to disembowel another Dragon.
Fire: Fire Dragons are often fiery and hotheaded, like their element. They are sometimes prone to explosions of temper and wanderlust, and are often the first on the battlefield or the first to volunteer. Fire Dragons have an instinctive control of fire from the moment they hatch, though this control must be honed or else they might set fire to a house, for example. The Breath Weapon of a Fire Dragon can range anywhere from a cone of fire, a burning hot jet of flame, or a lobbed fireball.
Water: The Water element commonly manifests itself in Waveskimmers and other Dragons that have close ties to water, though this is merely a commonality, not a rule. Water Dragons are often cool-headed and go with the flow, though if you anger one they can be powerful and unstoppable like tidal waves. Some Dragons are even able to create tidal waves, calling the very essence of water to do their bidding, while others have limited but more precise control over their element. Their Breath Weapons range anywhere from focused jets of water with the impact force of a train to more soothing, and potentially healing, waves.
Complex Elements
Frost: (Air + Water) Frost, or Ice, is the expected combination of Air and Water. Its forms, when compared to some of the other elements, are more limited, but this element can be just as devastating. Most frost Dragons are known for their ability to turn water into ice, though some are able to spontaneously generate ice from the moisture in the air, or are able to chill the temperature in a room to below freezing. The oldest and most powerful of Frost Dragons can either usher winter sooner or hold it at bay. Snowball fights between frost hatchlings in the middle of summer is quite common.
Energy: (Fire + Air) Often erratic and hard to predict, Energy Dragons are known for the havoc they tend to cause and their attraction to all things metal. They are, in essence, the treasure hoarders of the Dragons. Anything that might enhance their electric charge or, in some cases, suppress it, they want. They are known for localized electric storms and explosive bolts of lightning that shoot from their mouth. Some can even drain the electrical energy from another creature's nervous system, effectively draining their life-force. This ability, however, is rare and takes years of training.
Volcanic: (Fire + Earth) The Volcanic element is, potentially, one of the most terrifying elements in existence. With the combination of Fire and Earth Volcanic Dragons are capable of lobbing car sized, molten boulders at their enemies and they are often used as artillery. Some, however, have direct control over lava and can summon it in either a jet of molten rock or send it exploding outwards from their body. Volcanic Dragons are not always destructive though. Some can use their powers to create islands in the middle of the ocean, and others assist in the building of houses or other large buildings.
Steam: (Fire + Water) Steam dragons are strange and fickle creatures, often time ranging between two extremes. Some take on the traits of the fire they derive from, some take from the water. This makes a mix of dragons ranging from explosive and wild to calm and collected. Because of this some are naturally adept to lead while others are villains through and through. But all dragons with the power of steam are based from the combination of fire and water, and are all able to expel massive clouds and jets of boiling hot mist that can melt the skin off of even the most armored of dragons.
Sonic: (Air + Earth) Dragons blessed with the sonic rune will find themselves a mix of things, but as a general whole seem to be creatures that are rooted in their beliefs and aloof in their thoughts. These dragons often times make steadfast, though unique friends, and are more often than not very social creatures. Sonic dragons hold the mastery of all things sounds, ranging from mimicking what they hear, be it voice or instrument, and recreating it. This power also holds sway over frequencies far to high or below the range of hearing for humans, even some dragons, and this strength can be used to create sonic bombs which can crush a foe's inner ear and create severe hemorrhaging within their bodies, as well as deafness, dizziness, and concussive force.
Nature: (Earth + Water) Nature Dragons are odd creatures, the pairing of Earth and Water gives them control over plants, the earth, water, and to some degree animals. Their strong-point is in healing and making plants grow, though having the vines of a tree suddenly snap down and strangle you is not a fun way to go. A group of Nature Dragons can make an entire forest grow in days, and their Breath Weapons have such a wide variety of types that if it weren't for their shared affinity for plants they'd be classified under different elements. Some Nature Dragons have a poisonous Breath Weapon, breathing deadly gasses that are often colorless and odorless, while some spit toxic goo that will eat through anything organic. Others spray a healing mist that calms and soothes, and some might have venomous fangs instead.
