I've spent the week reading and listening to a number of Jewish scholars describing the character of Abraham through his life. Abraham is presents as an example in Jewish antiquity as a person we should learn to emulate. As I learned these attributes that these sages describe, I began to see a pattern that followers of the Messiah would recognize.
Blessed are the poor in spirit: Abram recognized his own sense of spiritual need
Blessed are those who mourn: Abram was grieved for the spiritual blindness and insensitivity of his world
Blessed are the meek: Abram is described as self-abasing in the presence of others
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness: Abram is described as from his earliest days not being content with the religious hypocrisy that surrounded him.
Blessed are the merciful: Abram championed the cause of the needy
Blessed are the pure in heart: Abram refused the selfish agendas of others
Blessed are the peace-makers: Abram actively sought reconciliation with those who were against him
Blessed are those who are persecuted (put under pressure) for righteousness sake: Abraham was put to greater tests than any of us to demonstrate his faithfulness to God.
