Yachel means "to gather" or to assemble. It contrasts, somewhat with the idea of "kadosh" which means that which is separate, distinct or set apart. Yachel describes a sense of commonality or belonging. It's worth noting that this is the concept with which the Most High describes the act of building the tabernacle. This is not a Moses thing, nor even an idea of the leadership. It is literally an introduction of the concept, "for the people and by the people." It's easy to lose this when we come together in our modern expectations of worship. We tend to gather as a collection of individuals: some are giving, some are receiving, some are just enjoying the show. We easily lose sight of what it means to be a part of something: to have a role, not as an individual but as a member of the community. This is the cultural definition of veyachel and what is described to us in the manner the people apply themselves to the construct of the Tabernacle. Each person who has a willing heart is making his or her contribution; but not to establish a trophy for themselves within the community. The end goal is to build the Tabernacle, as a community, the house for God. |
