The people became obstinate

And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt? And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt. Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.
(Numbers 14:2-5)

The people literally became obstinate. This is the image we typically see of the mule that refuses to move forward. But it was much more insidious than simply stopping in their tracks in rebellion. As one would say to another, “Let us make us a “head” and let us return to Egypt,” the circumstances were that of confusion. We often see this today, when leadership is undermined, the congregation begins to reel in a panic state of mob. Now, of course, there were a number of qualified men who could potentially take on the role as a democratic head. There have been, and will be, a list of potential leaders who are anxious to rise to the top. But those guys all know what waits for the person who would lead the people back to Egypt. It would be a short-lived reign… literally.
