And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. (Exodus 19:6 KJV) The nation of Israel determined by God to become "a kingdom of priests" is largely dismissed by the Christian world. In fact, many arrogantly assert that the gentile church has been called to replace Israel in this role (though without obeying His voice, nor keeping His covenant). The Jewish understanding of this responsibility is equally dismissed, determining that the Torah and the covenant is for her alone. Yet, the idea of priesthood is that of intermediary between God and man. Israel’s role is that of demonstrating God’s will and purpose in relationship offered to all of mankind. Paul speaks of this in Romans 1-3, that faith is given to the Jew first (primarily) but also (by extension) to the Greek. |
