For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount. (Exodus 19:2 KJV) Rabbis tell us that the Torah must have been given in the wilderness. If it were given in the Promised Land, then Israel could say, "It is ours." If it were given some place else, then others could say, "It was taken from us." But given in the wilderness, it is established for all who will take it for themselves.
