oh, turns out you did post this on juts. too bad the song has been taken down and i can't listen to it. /:
the PC-88 version of snatchers ost is pretty rad, although i feel like the sega CD and the MSX versions were stronger. MSX - eternal promise MSX - pleasure of tension Sega CD - one night in neo kobe Sega CD - pleasure of tension
i still haven't gotten around to listening to any more than patience and encounter from this, and i don't know why. those songs are fantastic ): Edited by J. Beaumont, May 24 2011, 12:51 PM.

I've been listening to a lot of Hamauzu lately and recently discovered the soundtrack for a game called Shiguma Hamonikusu, or Sigma Harmonics (i'd only heard a single song before now). I think its kind of swell. Hope Given "Dance of the Dog's Howl" The first song I heard for this game. I think this and "Showing Heart" (linked below) really help to emphasize that one of my favorite things about Hamauzu's work is the way he uses piano or keyboard type instruments. Corroding Darkness this kind of makes me want to see Hamauzu compose a Metroid soundtrack. Showing Heart "Dance of Cornered Rat" I'm getting kind of a big SaGa Frontier II vibe from this, particularly in the percussion and the first piano melody~ Guided to the Finale Dance of the Moon Spirit

When I listen to Skullgirls' music it's like there's a complete divide between modern Yamane and the one who composed for SotN or LoI. But the song I linked stirs up a quality that I think she's lost or abandoned, even if a lot of it is built around a fairly straightforward chromatic transition. The melodies feel a little looser, a little more syncopated, and the resolutions aren't in such a dang hurry to be formulaically resolved. The part at 38 seconds seems so reminiscent and right, and not in a "here we go again" way (the resolution at 50 seconds bothers me a lot (not as much as 2:01 to 2:07, though)). For me this would be a pretty great song if the instrumentation weren't so weak, and if the percussive work didn't stay fixed to one pattern. I wonder what Yamane's honest feelings about where she is right now, as a composer, are. |
