Ok, here it is... Mystery in the Cave "Ugh, I'm bored." Said Tony to his friend John as he rode up to him in his yard on his bike. "Well, we could go see if we can swim with Josh in his pool." "We did that yesterday and Wednesday, not to mention Monday." "We could sit and talk like on Tuesday and Sunday." "Theres nothing else to talk about." "Thats true. I know! lets ride our bikes to the ice cream store!" "Sure, we just did it Saturday, but whatever." "Yea the horse ride down is about two hours. Then we camp for a week." Said the man in front of them. At the ice cream store. "When?" Asked the man he was talking to. "The next trip will be July 20 through 27." "Hmm... I wonder what they are talking about?" Asked Tony. "Sounds like fun." Answered John. "For more info go to campgrandcanyon.com, heres my card." Said the first man. "Grand Canyon?! Sweet! Dude, we should do it." Said John. "We should. I wonder how much it costs." "Large triple chocolate Butter Finger Kit Kat and Heath flurry." Said the ice cream guy, the man talking took it and left. "Four hundred dollars per person." Said John as they read the website. "Crud, we have 3 months to raise a eight hundred dollars." "Plus the travel fees." Groaned Tony. "Oh, yea. Great. Thats about one hundred dollars...Each." "Maybe we should ask our parents if we can even do it." Said Tony. "Sweet! I can do it!" Said John as they met up ten minutes later. "So can I!" "Now, where do we get the cash?" Wondered John aloud. "We could mow lawns or something." Suggested Tony. "Huh, We could start a lawn mowing company and put up signs." Answered John. JOHN AND TONY'S LAWN MOWING Cost: $10 per hour. When: anytime, call us at 653-8742 or johnandtonysmowing@gmail.com Read the signs they put up. "Well, lets hope it works." Said Tony as they hung up the last sign. "Now all we have to do is wait." Replied John. "Lets go play NASCAR '09." He finished. "I call Jimmy Johnson!" Said Tony as they took off on their bikes. "Let's check the email to see if there's anyone that wants their lawn mowed." Said Tony after a few races. "Ugh, nothing." "Hey John! My parents said they will pay a hundred bucks for the trip!" "Sweet!" Replied John a week later as Tony walked up to John's house. "maybe my parents will too. That would pay for the travel fees." "They will!" Said John when they met after lunch that day. "Awesome! thats three hundred dollars with the rest." Replied Tony. "Hey! Theres two more!" Cried Tony as they checked the email. "Hey John! That guy gave me five extra dollars! He also said that he would pay me to weed whack too!" "Sweet! We can add that to the sign and charge say...five bucks?" Replied John. "Sounds good, you have a weed whacker right?" "Yes." "Tony! I just checked the email and there's six more people wanting us to mow their lawns, and four want us to weed whack! That would get us enough money! "Cried John over the phone. "Sweet! I'll be right over." Replied Tony. "That's it! We're done!" Cried John when they where done. "Alright! Let's count it." "Nine hundred and ninety dollars." Said Tony when they finished counting. "We must have miscounted." He continued. "Well, I guess we gotta go mow another lawn." Replied John. "Yep. Let's check the email." "Theres two, we can just do both then take down the signs." Said John when they checked the email. "Ugh, now we have to wait ten days." Said Tony after they where done. "Well, we still gotta pack!" Replied John. "Thats true. I should probably start packing' to make sure I have everything I need." Said Tony. "Finally!" Cried Tony when the jet they where on took off. "I can't wait!" "Neither can I." Replied John. They where finally there. After a four hour plane ride John and Tony had ridden for two hours on horses down to the deepest part of the Grand Canyon. It was a long and bumpy journey. The group consisted of two park rangers, a photographer and his brother, (also a photographer) and two other tourists like them, except John and Tony where looking for an adventure, not the scenery. They helped set up camp for dusk was on its way. After camp was set up and a ranger had built a fire, the rangers called the whole group around the fire. The rangers told them the rules: “1. There will be absolutely no wandering of without a one of us rangers. 2. Do not do anything with the horses. 3. Keep all trash in the trash bags, we don't want to spoil this place. 4. Be vary careful with the fire. and 5. Us rangers always need know where you are, especially when we are outside of camp.” The next day John and Tony woke to the sound of voices, the rangers and photographers were getting breakfast. “I guess we should get up.” said Tony. “Yeah, I think Jack wants to show us something while Matt takes the photographers to that .” replied John, referring to the rangers. “That will be a relief, those to guys are always talking about this or that shot, this or that place thats great for taking pictures, or how much so and so paid for so and so photo.” After breakfast the photographers set out with Matt. “finally” whispered John to Tony when they were out of earshot, and Tony replied “you can say that again.” “finally” laughed John. “Heres a list of what I want you each to bring.” Said Jack. “We're going on a hike!” About twenty minuets later they found themselves at the base of a large waterfall about one hundred-fifty feet high, it made a tremendous noise. The ranger started to look for some special stones he wanted to show them, when he looked up the two others were nowhere to be found! They called and looked but could not find them. Suddenly the sky darkened and it started to downpour! The ranger told John and Tony to go into a nearby cave for shelter from the rain while he continued looking for the others. “This is a cool cave” said Tony as they sat waiting for something to happen. Then John cried “Hey Tony this is our chance for an adventure! We might find treasure or an old hermit or something in the back of this cave! Lets go explore!” They had no idea what they would find but what they did find was nothing close to anything that had crossed either of their minds. The ranger thought to himself “Oh I have to find those two, if something happens to either of them I might get sued or something and that would not be good. “Get your flashlight it will be dark back there.” Said John. “We should also bring some of our emergency rations.” “Speaking of food, lets we have a quick snack before we go.” replied Tony. “What do you think we will find back there?” asked John. An old pirates treasure? A gang of thieves? Dinosaur bones? A secret passage to the White House? An evil scientist's lab? These plus many more (some ridiculous and some not so ridiculous) were mentioned while they were eating. “Yum, I'm glad we packed those emergency rations.” commented Tony as they set out, flashlights in hand. They walked for about two minuets before coming to a split in the tunnel they went to the right because it was steeper and looked more like the type of tunnel to have an adventure and after another minuet or so they came to a cavern almost perfectly round, about fifteen feet across, ten feet up to the domed ceiling, and right in the middle sat a very large gray rock. "Nothing. I guess we should have expected it. Well I suppose we should head back." Said John. I guess so. Hey! Theres an unusual crack on that wall, see its too straight to be natural! And its nearly hidden! That crack was hidden on purpose!" Cried Tony. And John replied, "Your right! Lets go check it out!" As they walked around the rock they saw more cracks forming a rectangle on the wall. "Thats defiantly some sort of door." said John. "Lets try and open it!" They pulled and pushed put it did non budge, after vainly trying and trying they decided to take a break, so they sat down with their backs against the door. After a few minuets John said: "Hey Tony! look theres another door on that rock! Lets go see if we can open it!" With renewed energy they went over to the rock and upon close examination they found that there was a little crevice chipped out of the rock barely big enough for their fingers to fit in. John stuck his fingers in and found that there was a space behind the door he pulled and the door opened easily. "Oh, where are they?" Thought the ranger to himself, "Oh I wish we didn't get caught in this rain it would be so much easier to find them. Whats that in the distance? Is it two people? Is it them? I sure hope so, but I can hardly tell, because this rain is coming down so hard. Oh it better be them. They are causing so much trouble. Yes, that has to be them, I'm sure of it now." "Follow me into a cave where I will build a fire and we can warm up." said Jack as he walked up to the two. "Were are they? I told those two boys to stay right in the cave, but they're not here." Wondered Jack as they entered the cave. After sitting for a few minuets Jack got ready to go look for the two boys and as he was just leaving a thought struck him, "Maybe they went to the back of the cave, how about I make sure before I leave." "A lever!" Exclaimed John and Tony together when the contents of the space where revealed. Without even thinking they pulled lever and then a scraping noise started behind them, as they turned the door in the wall was just finishing opening and behind the door was a large cavern almost three times the size of the one that they were in. But there was an awful lot of difference other than size. As they walked past the door it closed and some lights went on. It was an "Automatic door closing and light turning on system" as Tony put it. "John, what do you think all this is?" "I don't know but theres only one way to find out!" Replied John. Jack walked for about two minuets when he came to a fork in the cave and he decided to go to the left because the right was steep and looked hard to get up. After walking for another two minuets he came to a small cavern. It had nothing in it, nobody was in there. As he walked back he decided to look for them in the other tunnel, though he was loosing hope because as walked up the steep tunnel he herd no voices, nothing just silence. After a minuet he came to a cavern about fifteen feet across and a domed ceiling about ten feet above and in the middle sat a large rock but the thing he noticed most was that there was nobody in the cavern. As he turned to leave he thought he heard a faint noise, possibly voices coming from the back wall he stopped and listened but he heard no more, it was probably just his imagination. As he was walking back to the front of the cave he thought about what he saw. "Nothing unusual, except there was some straight cracks in the back wall. Never mind, I'm probably imagining again. Anyways how would they be able to make straight cracks in the wall? It could not have been them." As Tony and John walked into the cavern, they saw many stacks of boxes and crates piled up around the cavern. "Lets open one and see whats in it!" Cried Tony. They walked to the nearest crate and tried to open it but the lid would not come off. "I wonder if theres anything we can use, maybe theres a hammer around here." They looked and found a toolbox by a wall in to there dismay there was no hammer but there was a small crowbar, this they used to pry off the lid of the crate and in it was several small cardboard boxes, they took one out and opened the box. They gasped at the contents. As Jack was walking back through the tunnels a thought struck him. "Did I go in the wrong cave? maybe I can look for footprints in this cave and see if they even came into this cave. When he came back to the main cave he looked for footprints, he found none other than those that he and the others had made. "I suppose they might have been messed up by us when we entered, but I will still go look for them in a different cave, I know I saw them enter a cave though I don't know which one." After informing the others, he left the cave and went to the nearest cave, about ten feet away. When he entered the cave he saw footprints, he was sure that they were the boys but he didn't know what kind of shoes they had,he found that the prints led into the cave but not out. "Interesting, were could they be? Farther back in the cave? Maybe though I don't know why. Wait, whats that on the floor, a paper? What does it say?" "Dear Jack We went to the back of the cave to explor Mite be back soon. hope we have enuf food. Don't know how long we will be gone Tony" After reading this Jack thought: "Hmm, needs to work on his spelling. I guess I better go find them before something happens." "Wow, this could be bad." Said John. "No kidding." Replied Tony. "What should we do?" "I have no idea, lets find Jack" They closed the box and put it back how they had found it, looked in a few more boxes, then turned to go and realized that the door had closed, and this time there was no rock in the middle of the room. Jack followed the footprints back into the cave and started to think that he had been in the cave before, when he realized that this cave was vary similar to the cave that he went in before. In fact vary similar when he came to a fork in the cave. He followed the footprints to the right and soon came to a cave almost exactly the same as the other he followed the footprints around the rock and to the far wall, it looked like they had sat down by the wall, then they walked to the rock and sat there. "Interesting, why would they sit down and then get up and sit down in another place?" He thought. "Unless, they saw something that they wanted to look at up close." It took just a glance to see the little door and the lever inside, on the rock. "Well, now what? How do we get out?" asked Tony. "I dunno but we gotta get out soon so we can tell Jack." replied John. "I'm hungry" Suddenly said Tony. "Lets eat." "Fine but then we find a way out, and lets hurry." Said John realizing that he was quite hungry too. "Should I pull it? What does it do? What would happen? Did they pull it? Did they pull it!? Thats it! If they pulled it that means if I pull it then I will be closer to finding them! Did they pull it?" All this went through Jacks mind in a few seconds after he saw the lever. He looked closer and saw that there was dust on it except where someone had recently pulled it, he couldn't be sure if it had been them or not though. After a few seconds of thought, he decided to pull it. "Okay, now how do we get out?" Wondered John when they were done eating. "Should we try pushing on the door?" Suggested Tony. "Dunno, I suppose we could try it, or we can look around for something like controls or a lever." Replied John." "Lets go look on the other side of the room, maybe theres some controls or something." After walking past several boxes similar to the one they opened earlier they came to the far wall. Finding nothing they started to walk back, but on the way back they saw something. "What is that? A control station?!" Hurriedly said Tony. At a closer examination they found a map of the room with doors every ten or so feet, when they thought about it this was a very large cave probably fifty feet across. There was a switch by every door. "Should we switch one?" Asked Tony referring to the switches. "I bet they are for the doors, lets try the this one." He said, pointing to the switch by the door they had come in. He flipped it. Jack was just about to pull the lever when suddenly the door behind him opened. "What!?" He cried. Then he saw them. John and Tony. "What happened? Did you open the door? How? What is all this stuff? What were you doing?" He asked all this as they walked up to him. "Yes we opened it, with a switch over there, what is this stuff well we where going to tell you that and what where we doing? exploring." Calmly answered John as they walked up to the Jack. "What exactly is this stuff?" Slowly asked Jack after a few seconds of thought. "Mine" Said a rough voice behind them. They quickly turned around and there stood a rough looking man about six feet two inches tall. He held a 22 pistol in one hand and a coil of rope in the other. "Get over there by the wall." He said, waving his pistol in that direction. He tied them up with the rope and said, "You just sit tight, I have some business to tend to. Then I'll be back to take care of you." "Now what?" Asked Tony a few seconds after the man had shut off the lights and left. "Can you reach my knife? We could cut ourselves out." Replied Jack. "I think so, but John is closer." "I'll try." said John, reaching for the knife. "Got it! Jack, can you move a little bit closer to me? I can't quite reach." "Now let me cut you out." Said Jack after John had cut the rope. "We better get out before 'Mr. Just Sit Tight' gets back." Said Tony after he was untied. "I think thats the door we came in." Said John, when they where looking at the door controls by the wall of the cavern. "No, let's use another door, he may have placed a guard. The one that we are most likely not to use." "Which is that?" Asked Tony. "The one farthest from the controls." Replied Jack. "Okay, here goes nothing!" Said John, as he flipped the switch. And thats exactly what happened. Nothing. "He must have locked them somehow." Slowly said Tony. "Could we try another door?" "I guess so, try that one." Replied Jack. Suddenly the door they had tried to open before opened! "Hey! It must have been jammed, or something!" Tony cried. They quickly crossed the room and went out the door, into the smaller cave. Shortly after, the door closed. "By the way, what is in those boxes?" Asked Jack as they walked through the cave. "Mine" Laughed John. "Actually, its counterfeiting equipment. Printers, ink, paper, everything needed, plus a few guns." "We need to get the cops. And fast, now that they are found the counterfeiters might move out. That may be the business that he was referring to." Jack had no idea how close to the truth he actually was. The rain had stopped when they were in the cave and the others where ready to go when they got back. "Lets go, we need to get the police." "What happened? Is something wrong?" Everything was explained to them on the way back. "The boys and me gotta go get the cops. I'll explain later." Said Jack to the other campers when they got back to the campsite. "I will call for the camp helicopter." In the police station, they explained everything to the police chief, who said, "Counterfeiters eh? Well lets get out there and nab em' before they scatter." "Put her down right by the waterfall!" Yelled Jack as the police helicopter came in view of the waterfall. "Follow me! said Jack, as they got out of the helicopter and headed for the cave. "Ready?" Asked Jack before he pulled the lever in the rock. "Here goes!" He said after a nod from the chief. With guns drawn the police went in the room before the door was fully open. "Drop your weapons, and put your hands in the air!" Yelled the chief as they entered. Everyone was taken by surprise and obeyed immediately. Except for one. Apparently their leader, the same man who had caught them in the cave before. "Well, well well," he said. "The intruders brought some friends, I hope yo-" "Put your hands in the air!" He was quiet after that. "A national gang eh?" Said the chief as the leader confessed everything back at the station. "Yea, all over America the boss has smaller gangs working on making and distributing the money. We only stay in one spot for about six months. then we move to another spot so theres less chance of being found." "This 'boss' of yours, who is he?" asked the chief. "Nobody knows, he calls us to give us orders. We just call him 'boss'." "Where is he located?" "Same thing, nobody knows." "Does he call regularly?" "No, he only calls to give us special orders." "How long have you been here?" "About six months, we where gonna move out tomorrow, thats why everything was in boxes." "Where were you you going to go?" "I don't know, boss is gonna call to tell me where to go." "When?" "Don't know, he always calls at different times, again, for secrecy." "Hmm, What phone does he call?" "The one that was in my pocket when you arrested me." "We can hook it up so it will tell us where the caller is. And you will answer and act normal. As if nothing happened." "Hello?" Asked the counterfeiter after the phone rang three and a half hours later. "There is a cave right under the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge, go there." *Click* Went the phone. As 'The boss' hung up. "He is just north of Dallas sir." Said the police officer at the computer. "How are we gonna get him?" Asked Jack. "We will send a S.W.A.T. team to storm his hideout." Replied the chief. " And this time you can't come." The gang leader was taken by surprise. He thought that he was so secret he would never get found. As the S.W.A.T. team came in he started to pull a gun from his pocket, but saw that he was caught, and went willingly. They searched him and found two more pistols, extra ammunition, two knives, and a cell phone. But back in the Dallas police station he would not talk. He did say that none of the other counterfeiters know where the others are. "How are we gonna get them?" Asked Tony when he was told about it. "I have no idea." Answered the chief. "We will probably just warn all the police stations and have them tell the stores to watch for counterfeit bills." "Can I see his phone? I have an idea." Said Tony. "I guess so, whats your idea?" Replied the chief. "Let's check the phone number list on his phone." Answered Tony. "Ya! Why didn't I think of that?" Laughed the chief. "Yep" Said the chief. "Theres nine different numbers here labeled with different places where they are. Now all we have to do is tell the police stations in the areas of these locations to nab 'em." He finished. "Well, I guess its time to go home." Said John. "Ya, maybe we can do something next summer." Replied Tony. "Hey Tony! Whats this trap door?" Asked John back at home when they where cleaning out Tony's shed for money to go on another trip. "What trapdoor?" Asked Tony when he walked in from outside. "It's a trap door right here." Replied John. "I have no idea, and dad doesn't know about it either. That wood covering it up was here when we moved." Said Tony. "I guess theres only one way to find out what it is." He continued. "I'll go grab a flashlight." The End for now... It's kinda different because I can't center things on this, but it is the story
