Made me think...

This quote was taken from a recent article that surfaced on Yahoo!.

It was about brain trauma and how it was poorly diagnosed with soldiers.

Something that really got to me was this quote right here...

"I always put the military first, even before my family and friends. Now looking back, I wonder if I did the right thing," she said. "I served my country. Now what's my country doing for me?"

It was said by a veteran, of course, but the context get's to me.
It rings true.

I mean these soldiers are basically doing all the fighting for free. If you think about it, they don't really get THAT much of a benefit from serving.
And long time serving, dedicated soldiers, get even less.

I know people would love to debate this but in my opinion, they should at least be granted a stable life with needed benefits if they truly are veterans.
I may be wrong about this but I'm pretty sure they get neglected a lot of the time.

Hell, I know I would love some "benefits" (mind you, some useful ones) if I had served my country for a certain amount of years.
Not talking about million dollar checks, just the useful stuff, so that you can enjoy whatever time you have left with family and friends.
After all, being a soldier is just suicidal in most cases.

They really do go in there as substitutes for us...

When I hear the phrase "serving your country" Ithink of protecting oil reserves and accomplishing imperalist, corporate driven invasions of sovereign nations. (i.e. allowing the Iraqi cultural meusem to be ransacked by looters while definding an oil depot down the street.) With this in mind. I really don't think people who murder to accomplish these objectives should be given benefits, especially since there is no way in hell any of these people were drafted or are fighting out of an olbigation to a defensive war. Its imperalist, corporate greed pure and simple driving the current conflicts...and that to me does not desrve to be rewarded. WWII on the other hand, or Viet Nam with its draft- I can dig that. But not the current batch of nice little conflicts we have, no way. Just my two cents...and nothing at all personal against you solid. Just differing opinions.

"Soldiers fight for kings they've never even met. They fight when they're told to fight, they die when they're told to die...don't waste your life following some fools orders" ..this line got to me

if i ever fight, it will be for my reasons not somebody else's

but won't you have to follow oders ruff? chain of command, right? And if those orders indicate hosing down villages because of suspected i"nsurgents"? as in the Fallujah clean out? Street by street that place was CLEASNED. thousands killed. Could you really be a part of that? Are you really bringing "freedom" to these people or just raping them for their natural resources? wiping out whole percentages of countires. Ording jellied napalm strikes, burning the skin of the bones, "Shock and Awing" by throwing cruise missles into neighboorhoods (saw this terrorism myself on day one of the invasion) No way man, fuck that crap.

I respect your opinions and I understand what you are trying to say. The recent wars are debatable but that's not what made me think...

It's just the fact that most veterans are neglected. Especially WWII ones which are dying off as we speak anyway.

My great grandparents, for example, almost have no real benefits at all... I mean they got drafted, fought, and lived to tell the story.
Because of their survival and part in the war, my grandparents were allowed to live, which in turn made my parents possible, and in the end, myself.

I really respect them for it and AM GLAD that I didn't have to go through that. I mean the things my great grandfather is suffering from today... its awful.

I just think that we take everything for granted and then complain that life's a bitch, you know.

No one wants to die, but these people risked it for at least some safety in the mean time. All I'm saying is that If I were in their position, I would like an "insured" remaining life.
I would think I deserve it.

But, we all know that's never going to happen. Man is too greedy and self centered. That is his curse.
And when we do unite, its only out of fear of death and defeat, because once we can stand back up on our feet, the strong alliance that was, will become brittle and weak, and some day will snap...

It's too bad really...
