Those challah look gorgeous! Mine don't turn out that fancy, but I'm trying!

Make a youtube video! That's a fantastic idea!

I took a challah class with my rebbitzen and it made all the difference, only I still prefer Realeez's recipe to anyone else's.

Thanks guys!

I make a 6-braided challah. It gets easy after awhile. The Spice and Spirit cookbook has illustrations on how to make a 3, 4 and 6 braided challah. They're pretty easy to follow.

Hotchili, those are great!

When I used to make my moms recipe, I did 6 braids without a baking pan. My recipe comes out so much better when I make it in baking pans. So when I'm in a rush, I do a 3 braid, and once its baked in the pan it looks almost the same!

I want to try the 6 braid!!
There is a reason I do heart challahs.
My husband proposed to me in shul on Shabbat.
Then hosted a surprise kiddush for our engagement at the shul that day.
Then we went to our friends for lunch, and it was a surprise l'chaim, with HEARTS EVERYWHERE, on the lamps, on the towels, on the table, balloons, on the napkins, the plates, the cups etc., even the challahs were heart shaped, so since that day I make heart shaped challahs. One to remind me of that fantastic day and how amazing we each felt that day, it also reminds me of what wonderful friends I had who helped my husband plan everything (it was an entire weekend of surprises but I will spare you ) and also because it reminds me of the great love my husband and I have for one another.

That's beautiful! I love that story.

SM.. I'm visual.. if you ever do get a chance to do a youtube video, I'd love to see it. I do a 4 braid challah. We learned to do a 6 braid one where you do a large 3 braid and a small 3 braid on top of it, but it doesn't turn out like yours.

I could try next time I make challah. But I need to find a videographer (my daughter).

Dina, I could post my recipe, too, if you want.

so realeez- how bout posting your recipe??
1 cup water
1/2 cup oil
1/2 cup sugar
1 T. honey (optional)
2.5 tsp salt
2 eggs
4 cups flour
2 1/4 tsp yeast

If you have a bread machine you put everything in in that order and put on dough cycle.

If not, put the yeast in the water with some of the sugar. when it bubbles knead in the rest. the longer you knead the better the challah. I'll bet you could do it in the food processor also - maybe with the plastic blade. Let rise for 2 hours or so.

Shape. Let rise for about 1.5 - 2 hours. Egg wash the challah. Put in non preheated oven, turn on oven, and bake about 1/2 hour until golden on outside and sounds hollow when tapped.

Try it one time :) So many of my friends who have never made challah started with this recipe and were so happy. Do you have a stand mixer or a Cuisinart?

Realeez, why don't you preheat your oven?

Dina, I will post it in a little while. I've got my hands full with babies and bottles.

I make Realeez's recipe and I preheat. I put them in meatloaf tins so that recipe fills two. I add 5 minutes for that second challah.. so 35 minutes in a preheated oven. I also sprinkle vanilla sugar on top and it's always a hit. Sometimes I add a squirt of Agave in addition to everything else.

Dina, I love her recipe because it's only 4 C flour. It's manageable for me to work with. The only extra tip I have, is when it's ready to bread, sometimes it's still a bit gooey. I put extra flour on the waxed paper, and when I take my strands, I roll it in the extra flour and then I get a perfect braid.

apparently if you don't preheat it makes it rise more.

barbie, i think the gooey-ness has to do with US vs Cdn all purpose flour. I think our all purpse flour is closer to US bread flour.

I use the bread flour....

I didn't realize it rises more if I don't preheat... I'll try it next time.

don't need to take challah from this amount.

(and no such thing as a stupid question)
