Who on earth needs a Toastmaster by David Lister : Toastmaster MNGT The best way to answer the question is to ask a friend who had one at their wedding but failing that here are some of the answers. WE DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START I’m bound to say, with the toastmaster, aren’t I? However there’s no one who knows more about every single aspect of a wedding, including all the service providers, good and bad. ALL HE DOES IS BANG HIS HAMMER Most of my work is done behind the scenes ensuring that everything happens the way you want it to. The “hammer” or gavel is only used to tell people that something important is going to be said and, for their sake, need to listen. STUFFY AND TOO FORMAL You can’t do the job without good humour and a sense of fun! The red tailcoat is worn to provide an obvious focal point for everyone to seek help and advice. There are always lots of questions that can be dealt with without any of the bridal party being bothered. The guests always warm to my presence when they realise that I’m not there as a policeman but simply to help them to have a wonderful day. YOU DON’T NEED TRADITION Maybe you’re right but if it’s worked for hundreds of years then it will certainly work for you. There’s a lot to be said for our “modern world” but it’s a fairy-tale day so do leave room for a little bit of old world magic. WE WANT TO DO IT OUR WAY No problem but you will need help to realise your dream. My motto is “Things don’t go right by accident”. IT’S THE BEST MAN’S JOB Yes it should be, but no matter how good he is there are lots of duties that only a toastmaster has the training or time to deal with. So why not let the best man do just as much as he feels he can then let him enjoy the day, with everyone else. THE SPEECHES ARE A NIGHTMARE My job is to make it easy for everyone. I have a special formula that enables those in total fear to say a few words and enjoy it! WE HAVEN’T GOT MUCH TIME I would have done a lot of planning with you beforehand but on the day my liaison between all the service providers will make it happen, without you needing to worry about a thing. My most important prop is not voice or gavel but my watch and I even carry a spare, just in case. THE HOTEL DO THE JOB Oh no they don’t! They will certainly bang on the table and announce the speeches, in a totally dispassionate way. However, as your toastmaster I would have already given you lots of help and advice so that on the day we work together as a team. You will feel my guiding hand at every stage, like a friend. WE CAN DO WITHOUT A TOASTMASTER The only answer I can give is to quote what almost all my brides say to me;- “We don’t know what we would have done without you” More info on www.davidlister-toastmaster.com or email davidlister@localdial.com |
