Falling, Failing

Lumina cinched the belt around her waist a little tighter and smoothed out the long green dress she had worn for the trip. She had thrown her long brown hair into a bun on her head and ad tiny braids in it for flair. She had come here just for a trip, life got a little boring cramped up in the temple and she always liked to get away sometimes. She had to be there for the solstices and so autumn was the best time for her to visit. She also liked to go and see those who couldn’t travel to her temple for whatever reason. Today she hadn’t come as a priestess. She didn’t wear the pendant that marked her as Lysithea’s chosen and so walked today as just a normal woman. Talavane wasn’t much different than she remembered from her last trip, but things in Archea never seemed to change much. The fountain burbled happily in the center of the town square and Lumina made her way over to it. She sat down on the stone side and trailed her fingers in the water. She stared deeply into the water watching the sparkling of coppers people had tossed in for good luck. As she was watching a common woman recognized her and came over. “Priestess a blessing please,” The woman got down on one knee and Lumina glanced around. She did a quick blessing before anyone noticed and shooed the woman on her way. |

Leander arched his back, enjoying the warmth of the day's sun. He'd just finished patching up his boots with a thick needle and leather cord, holding together fairly well, given their age. He'd not bought a new pair since leaving his home, though at the rate they were fraying, their time was approaching. Holding his left arm close to his side, cradling it to his stomach, he pulled the wrinkles out of the sleeve. Running his good hand through ruffled hair, Leander strode the cobbled path, keeping his head high among the light crowd. Keeping with the flow of the population to the town square, he fished in a pocket for loose change. Pulling out a copper, he turned it in hand as he made his way to the fountain. The woman directly in front of him had shifted her path to approach the woman sitting on the stone bench around the fountain. Paying little mind to her, he closed his eyes, pressing the coin to his lips and whispering a quick prayer. Resting it atop his thumb and forefinger, he flipped it into the water with a small splash, drowned out by the gentle rush of water spouting from the fountain. Once the woman left, he looked to the sky, licking his lips. “Do you think”, he spoke just loud enough for the priestess to hear, “That there is a power that can help the helpless?” His tone was strained, forced. He was hardly interested in true religion, but the question of someone who could make him whole intrigued him. Smiling, he looked down at the sitting woman. "Leander Tristram." He extended his hand, the stretched flesh of his shortened middle finger shining. |

Falling, Failing

Lumina heard the small plink of a coin being tossed into the fountain behind her. She paid the small sound no mind, figuring that people normally tossed them in every now and then to improve their lots in life. Her eyes strayed across the street watching the woman she had blessed walk away hoping that she wouldn’t be pointed out to the crowd. Thankfully the goddess was with her and the woman went silently back to her gaggle. However another voice drew her attention and Lumina moved her eyes over to the man who had spoken and drank him in for a moment. She smiled at him and grasped his outstretched hand. “Lumina Azimuth,” She shimmed over to the side and indicated that the stone seat beside her was free. “It’s called love. The power you’re thinking of.” Lumina glanced over to a young couple holding hands. “It happens in many different ways and forms but those who love will always want to lend a hand where no one else will.” She fell silent for a moment. “If you mean the Gods and Goddess of our world,” Lumina shrugged slowly. “They work in many different ways that can be hard to see or understand. They can touch someone’s heart and push them down the alley with the hungry man. Whether or not the person will part with a copper is another matter,” Lumina glanced into the fountain. “So sad they do it so easily for their own wish,” She smiled a little sadly, knowing where that money would go at the end of the month. |

Leander bowed his head to her, smiling as he took the seat next to her. Clasping his hands together, he sighed, feeling the warmth emanating from his burns. Taking a glance at the couple, he smiled. “Love? Hard to find these days.” He chuckled, shaking his head. “I'd be willing to bet my life that their love is a temporary thing. Maybe it will fall apart all at once, maybe they'll get married and live their lives unhappily.” Looking down at his hand, he pulled the sleeve back to his elbow. Slumping his back, he dipped it into the fountain, sighing. “They could touch their heart. Maybe the man would give a copper. Who's to say the hungry man wouldn't want more?” He kept a smile on his face. “The poor are willing to go to extreme lengths to get that which they require. It's not a beautiful world at the bottom of the ladder.” Looking back to the fountain, he pursed his lips, nodding. “Even when they need the money, they would wish it away, giving up a warm meal for a vague hope. Meanwhile their money lines noble pockets. It's an unjust world. They need someone who can help them.” |

“Aren’t you just a ray of sunshine.” Lumina smiled to take any sting out of her words. “Many forms doesn’t always have to be romantic. Maybe their time together will end because of a myriad of reasons but they will always have the memory of being in love and they will hold it close to themselves always.” Lumina watched as the boy wrapped his arm around the girl and gave her a kiss on the head before the ducked into a local bakery. Lumina turned and looked at him and studied him for a long moment before she said anything. “I’ve seen what the poor will do, the lengths they will go. It normally involves many, many things and most involve the Gods turning their heads in shame. You rarely see the hungry man seeking solace in a temple.” Lumina shrugged and watched Leander’s hand in the water. “It’s a beautiful world if you know where to look,” Lumina’s eyes sparkled as she watched the man, and laughter seemed to play about her lips. “Is that someone you?” Lumina reached down and touched Leander’s and with her own. “The world will always be unjust. No matter what you do the emptiness people feel inside will not be filled. We lust for more and more and more.” She withdrew and stared at him. “They need to help themselves,” |

A smile broke through Leander's solemnity, creasing the corners of his eyes, skin dark and wrinkled from constant exposure to sunlight. “Truth.” He chuckled lightly. “No matter the trials life will put us through, we'll always have that experience, that memory to cling to. For some of us, that's all we have to hold on to, all that keeps us going.” He took in a deep breath. “But not all of us know where to look.” “That someone could be anyone. It could be me, it could be you. That someone resides in all of us. Maybe a peasant, maybe a king. Maybe a god. I know the hurts of the world are too deep for any one man to cure on his own. No one man can help everyone. But to the starving man, the man on the edge of death, a helping hand makes all the difference. Isn't it worth it all the difference to save that one man?” Leander smiled at her touch, the burnt flesh twitching. “A young man can have his dreams. But I know a taste of the darker parts of the world. And I'm going to do all I can to help, even if it's just that one, starving man.” Leander smiled at her. |
