Maldrid was going on a usual walkabout of the academy. He didn't have much in mind to do today since he had no classes at the moment. It was times like these that Maldrid enjoyed because it had a sense of unpredictability. For Maldrid didn't like to follow a set routine for an extended period of time. The classes that he took for the better part of a week were pretty much all he could stand. It was nice for him to be able to have a free days at the end of his week. The reason for him having a dislike in a routine was the fact that the days would blend one into the next and his days and weeks would go along too fast for his liking. He preferred to enjoy his days and savor life as it came to him.

He roamed the halls at a leisurely pace, taking in the sights as he went along. Occasionally he'd get a few nobles that would come and talk to him for no reason at all other than to say they had a conversation with royalty. Maldrid would go along with their conversation because he didn't want to be the kind of person to act all high and mighty to not slow down and talk with anyone who wished it. He also enjoyed meeting new people that would randomly come up and strike up a conversation. After a few of those conversations, Maldrid started to get a bit bored with walking the halls. He decided that he'd want to spend the next few hours practicing on his weapon skills.

Maldrid walked along the corridors to arrive at the training grounds. The sound of clanking weapons could be heard throughout the grounds. He went to where he typically stored his things and equipped himself with his studded leather armor. He didn't want to go into training unprotected, he even put on his face concealing helmet. Even though people here were there for some friendly sparring, you could still have an accident. Maldrid would be open to anyone who asked to spar with him but he decided to start off his training practicing alone. He went up to the practice weapon rack and grabbed a halberd. Maldrid hadn't practiced with a pole arm in quite some time and he thought this would be a great weapon to start with.

After grabbing his weapon he went out into the middle of the field and started to perform various exercises. He'd start first with stretching his muscles then starting a simple lunging motion with the halberd and repeated the motion for a good ten minutes. He then went into exercises that involved wide sweeping motions with the weapon. He'd alternate which direction he swung the halberd to get his muscles accustomed to the motion. Maldrid knew to himself that he needed to practice the simple things often because it was basic motions that would often give the wielder the advantage. That was why they were taught so early and practiced so often.

When he'd finished with his basic exercises Maldrid went into a series of twirling motions with his weapon around his back and front. He made sure to keep himself balanced through it all and to relax the proper muscles to perform such a task. He kept note of where the blade was so as to not hit himself. After five minutes of this he stopped with that motion and continued onto another series of exercises.

Shydian carried an armful of books out of one of the rarely used doors of the academy. She was out of class for the moment and planned on skipping the next one she had for no other reason than she was sick of school for the day. It wasn’t that she was a bad girl or unwilling student, it was more along the lines of she was so completely overwhelmed with the material she needed to get away from it before she killed herself. Well maybe not that extreme but she would do something drastic like scream bloody murder in the middle of the class and run away. She decided that she would take this time off to study and try to understand what was going on. In her arms was the book she had to read about the art of language.

Sighing she ducked under a low hanging branch and weaved her way over to the training grounds. She found that the people there were so keen on their practice that they didn’t disturb her. She found a seat on one of the viewing benches and opened her book. She skimmed over the words, only half-interested. All of it seemed to go beyond her now that she was further into the year. She was sure how long she sat staring at the words on the page and barely taking it all in when the sound of someone practicing brought her out of her trance. She looked up to see a boy swinging around a halberd.

She left her book open on her lap and watched him go through his excises. It was more interesting than breaking apart sentences to find out various ways of saying something so that it was political. This school catered to the nobles in most classes so it wasn’t a surprise she had to learn these things. But hey they did have all the money.

She watched him twirl about the pole arm, her head resting in her hand as she did so.

Maldrid continued on with his exercises. These exercises were very challenging and at the same time taxing. He panted heavily as he attacked at some imaginary foe. Twirling the halberd with skill, slicing his imaginary enemies that challenged him in his mind. They came at him from all sides, he blocked, parried, and lunged at his foes. Maldrid was in his own moment, he could not stop, not when there where many people in his mind willing to kill him off. He blocked an imaginary blow to his chest and then used his enemy's momentum to his advantage and threw him away. Maldrid was then assailed by another foe trying to go at his legs. Maldrid jumped and slashed downward at his foe, killing him. There were more coming at him. He lunged at one, piercing him through the chest. He threw the imaginary corpse to the ground and took his weapon out of it's chest. The other one was trying lunge at him. Maldrid side-stepped the assailant and tripped him. Immediately after his foe hit the ground Maldrid stabbed him in the back.

After all this was done Maldrid stood up out of his fighting stance and breathed heavily. He was breathing so hard that to him he thought he'd never get his breath back again. He then put the practice halberd back on the weapon rack and then took off his helmet. Maldrid was relieved to be breathing fresh air and not the hot smelly air that came from inside the helmet. He took in greedy breaths of air to catch his remaining breath. After which, Maldrid decided that he deserved a break. He didn't want to leave the training grounds just yet. He wanted to have a few more hours of training since he had nothing better planned for his day. Maldrid then went over to one of the benches and sat down to regain some of his strength. Wielding a halberd with that much force wasn't exactly easy.

Maethorion was relieved to have finally made his way to the Training Grounds, instead of being caged like an animal inside the Academy. How he pitied those classroom teachers. Orion took in his surroundings. This was his classroom! The open field, the clashing of weapons, the blue sky above him. He loved it. And if he closed his eyes, it almost felt as if he was back on the battlefield. Mae took in a deep breath of the fresh air. He could get used to this, almost enjoy it, he would just have to keep his distance from that damned Academy.

Maethorion started making his rounds through the fields, walking barefoot across the sand, enjoying the cool sensation it gave on his feet. He wore a baggy and dark silken vestment which scarcely covered his upper torso, allowing the plethora of scars that painted his body to be readily seen. His pants were of the same material as his shirt, but tighter fitting and secured by a purple sash he wrapped around his waist, and his long snow white hair was pulled back into a knot. And for the first time in his stay the at the Noble Heart Academy, he allowed himself to break a smile, if only a small one.

Orion paced through the training fields, watching the pupils spar with each other, and gave advice when he saw an attack or defense that could be improved upon, but there was something he could not quite put his finger on. And as Mae studied them more and more, it became apparent to him what it was. Their movements, whether they be striking or parrying, they were fake. That was the best word Maethorion could think of. It was as if everything they did was choreographed. They put no heart into their fighting, no passion. To them, their sparring was no more than sport and for show. But Orion looked on the other hand. This was a generation that knew no strife; they knew not what warfare was. To them, battle and fighting was an ancient thing to be read about in text books, and Maethorion pitied them.

Orion became lost in his musings as he wondered about the training fields. The dark elf's train of thought was interrupted when he spied erratic movements in his peripheral vision. He turned his head and took notice of a young human boy. The boy held in his hands a training halberd. Normally, Mae would have said this was a clumsy weapon, but the human wielded it with relative skill, swinging it purposefully and precisely, as if besieged by multiple enemies. But more than that, Maethorion saw it in the boy's eyes, the bloodlust. The craze that takes over a person on the field of battle. This was someone who had an inkling of what war was.

Eventually exhaustion gave way, and the young man rested on one of the benches, after placing his weapon back upon its rack. Maethorion made his way over to one of the weapon racks. "You know, I can't say I have ever been a fan of halberds. How would you like to try your hand at spears?" Orion inquired, not making eye contact with the young man, but speaking loud enough to be heard. He grasped a training spear, the familiarity of it bringing back old memories of bloody battlefields and dire skirmishes. "But where are my manners?" Mae said as he broke from his reverie. "My name is Maethorion Saelnír, and I am one of the training instructors." He stated, bowing slightly as a courtesy.

When Maldrid had finished his little episode with the halberd and rested somewhat he saw a dark elf walking in his direction. This one was quite intimidating at first glance due to the scars that he had all over his body. Maldrid didn't let that get to him though, it could mean any number of things. He watched as the dark elf strolled over with confidence to the weapon rack.

"You know, I can't say I have ever been a fan of halberds. How would you like to try your hand at spears?" The elf said without even making eye contact with Maldrid. Maldrid thought this a bit disrespectful on the elf's part. Then again, when were dark elves ever respectful to anyone other than their own.

"But where are my manners? My name is Maethorion Saelnír, and I am one of the training instructors." The elf then bowed somewhat to Maldrid.

"Spears eh?" Maldrid said in a slightly sarcastic tone and chuckling a bit. He then went over to the rack and grabbed a training spear and tested its weight. "I suppose that I could give it a try." Maldrid then walked over into the training ground. "I am Maldrid Balief by the way. Pleased to meet you." Maldrid said this in a friendly tone. Maldrid wasn't one to be racist at all towards dark elves, despite the rumors about what they did to anyone who crossed them.

After arriving in the training ground Maldrid got into a simple fighting stance. He didn't want to show any sort of greater skill to this elf at the moment even though the reason for the elf's interest was probably the display Maldrid showed earlier with the halberd.

"Oh, Balief, eh? Royalty, then?" Orion inquired, attempting light conversation, something he was unpracticed in. All that the dark elf hoped, though, was that this was not another spoiled brat. While his halberd skills were impressive, there were no clues as to tell whether or not this was another pompous teenager within the academy.

But Maethorion smiled regardless, and followed him into the training circle. The dark elf wore no protection or padding, thinking that if the student struck him, he very well deserved it, and through his pain he would learn. Mae got into stance lateral to Maldrid. He firmed his grip on the spear, his strong arm grasping the butt of the spear, but loosened his grip with his left hand, which was placed roughly midway up the shaft of the weapon. He bent his legs slightly, feet shoulder-width apart, preparing himself for his first move.

"Then let us begin." Orion said, allowing a few seconds for Maldrid to ready himself before he started. When the moment passed, Mae made his move. Quickly, he turned his hips forward, transferring all of his weight on his front foot. Aiming for Maldrid's midsection, he drove his right shoulder all the way forward, extending his right arm completely while letting go of the spear with his left. The spear shot forward in a one-armed thrust.

"Yes actually," Maldrid said in response to the teacher's question.

Maldrid waited until the teacher made his first move. This move was apparently going to be a blow to Maldrid's midsection. He side-stepped the blow and with his own spear whacked the top of his opponent's spear and then twisted the spear in a way that would throw the spear to the side of him so that Maldrid could get a clean shot at the instructor's throat. After Maldrid had executed that move he lowered himself to the ground for balance and shot his own spear to the teacher's throat keeping both hands on his spear. If Maethorion made a move against Maldrid in retaliation he'd be prepared to move swiftly out of the way.

Maethorion was displeased that his blow did not land, but happy that this student showed so much prospect. His opponent had batted his spear aside, and with only one hand to stabilize the weapon, it lurched off to his side, leaving just about his entire body exposed. Having been in enough duels to know that his opponent would not waste such a golden opportunity, Maethorion worried more about dodging the next move, then getting back into his guard stance. Orion saw the point of the wooden spear come almost too late, and leaned to the side as he leaped backwards, with the wooden shaft of Maldrid's spear grazing the side of his throat.

Maethorion almost stumbled backwards, catching himself at the last second. "Hah. Maybe you should be training me." He said, almost embarrassed that he had had such a close call. Taking advantage of this moment of respite, he switched into a more slash-happy stance, this time placing his strong arm at the mid section of the spear, with his left hand grasp at the butt. He inched his way toward Maldrid, and once in range, swiped diagonally, aiming for where the shoulder met the neck.

"Hah. Maybe you should be training me." Maldrid heard Maethorion say to him.

"If that were the case I'd be the teacher and you the student," Maldrid replied back. After he had said this he saw the teacher get into a stance that would be used mostly for an offensive strike against him. Maldrid made sure to be wary of this and took up a defensive stance. Almost immediately after this Maethorion was closing in on him and swiped at his neck where his shoulder was. Maldrid blocked the attack and was surprised at how much force was put behind it. This elf was certainly playing for keeps now and Maldrid knew that if he had any chance of lasting any longer with the instructor, he'd have to do the same.

Maethorion's strike was blocked, but Maldrid gave a tiny bit of ground under the blow. Orion frowned a bit. Not that he was disappointed in the young man, but because he realized that he had probably been training out here for some time, and he was not at his full strength. But regardless, Mae pressed his attack. "Getting tired, are we? And here I had been hoping for a good duel. I guess I'll have to look elsewhere." Orion said, trying to ignite some anger within Maldrid, not to insult him, but to give some motivation to go on the offensive. Orion began goading the young man, snapping at the edge of his spear with his own. "C'mon... hit me." Mae taunted, smiling a toothy grin.

This dark elf was obviously very cocky. It was getting on Maldrid's nerves a bit. To top it off Maldrid was getting tired, but he knew that in a real battle situation there were no times for respite and one had to push himself beyond his limits in order to have any hope of survival.

"C'mon... hit me." The elf then gave a toothy grin after the taunt.

Maldrid then pushed Maethorion back and then stepped back himself and twirled his spear around in the air and stopped it behind him. Tired as he was he then proceeded to charge at the instructor with full intention to hit him. He held the tip of the spear in front of him and then at the last moment improvised. He then performed a summersault on the ground in hopes to get behind him. Once he got there he stayed low to the ground and slashed the spear at Maethorion's feet in hopes to trip him.

Maethorion could see the anger in Maldrid's eyes begin to grow. Orion was pushed back by the young man, after which he proceeded with a charge. The dark elf readied himself to parry, but at the last moment Maldrid somersaulted behind him, and before he could turn he felt his legs give way under him. The spear had struck Orion in the lower back of his legs with enough force to put the trainer on his back. When he hit the ground, the air was knocked out of him.

Letting go of his spear, Mae slowly rose to his feet panting. "Yes! Harness your hate... Make it useful!" Orion said to Maldrid, patting him on the back. "That is the kind of ferocity I want to see. And I believe you have won this duel." He added, bowing again.

OOC: I think we can effectively say this thread is finished.

IC:
Maldrid bowed back to the teacher. "Thank you for the match," Maldrid said with sincerity. Though anger can be useful in a combat scenario it could lead to one being too careless. He concluded to himself long ago that he'd maintain a delicate balance between his anger and a cool collected mind. Maldrid panted heavily and returned his weapon back to the training rack. After which, Maldrid went to his locker and took off his armor and donned something more comfortable. He felt that he had spent the day well, his time was something that Maldrid valued greatly. Maldrid felt he needed a break and then proceeded to the baths.

((OOC: One last post))

Maethorion nodded as Maldrid thanked him for the match. "I thank you for sparring with me." He replied. But with that, Maldrid left Orion. The dark elf felt that he did not drive his point into clarity, and that the young man would just disregard it as another unimportant teaching. Perhaps it was just Dark Elf and Human ideology not seeing eye to eye. It was true that dark elves were vicious in combat, and anger and malice were as effective tools for them as any sword or shield, but did the same not hold true for humans also? It was surely so. Mae pondered on this for a moment, and pushed it from his mind. It was just the beginning of the year, and no doubt he would see Maldrid again soon.
