Announcements
Hello members and guests! We have a few announcements here to make, first off; IK Reopens! After being closed for way too long, me and Luna have worked and brought IK back!
And we have a New Theme! I basically finished it, and just put it up last night. Let me know what you think.
We even got a new thing here, where you can help Build a Community, where you can make your own tavern or shop for In Character purposes, to give more depth to a character if they own a shop, then get your own forum for it.
There are also plenty of new forums! Welcome the Continents of Lebenna and Estahs!

That's all for now, but since we're getting back in action, plots will be started soon, where your characters can be a part of, and help the world either be destroyed, or saved.

Christiana was up a tree, quite literally. While one would think that this was an entirely unacceptable activity for a young lady of her breeding, she had a perfectly acceptable explanation for it. The explanation was this: Christiana had decided to draw the school for one of her teachers, and the best vantage point (she had decided), would be at this particular branch in this particular tree.

So she was carefully perched, her legs wrapped around the branch and her back against the tree. On her lap was a sketchpad, and a new drawing pencil clasped in her hand flew across the page.

The drawing was coming out quite nicely, she thought. It wasn't perfect, by any means, but it certainly would make a nice gift. Holding it at arm's length from her, she studied a little more critically before setting it on her lap again and trying to fix some of the errors she had found in it.

Maksimilian had intended to spend his day training, practicing, honing his skills despite the fact that he felt it truly wasn’t necessary; it wasn’t like he had anything better to do. However, that was not to be, for fate would be playing its hand in the course of the day’s events....

The midday sun was high, shining down brightly upon the school grounds. Maks made his way closer to the training area, a scabbard that was latched onto his belt bouncing at his hip and against his thigh. Long, black hair was left loose as always, blowing here and there in the gentle breeze. A white shirt that was made of a thin, loose material, clearly meant for these sorts of situations, adorned his upper body, with the sleeves rolled up so they wouldn’t get in the way. His boots stomped loudly on the ground with each stop he took, but once he reached his destination, he abruptly stopped.

Up in a nearby tree was the figure of a person, a young lady to be exact. Finding himself distracted by her presence, Maks decided to take it upon himself to get rid of her. Heaving a sigh - for these things always seemed to fall upon his shoulders - he made his way closer to the tree and looked up.

“The last time I checked, girls either belonged in the kitchen, sewing, or taking care of babies,” he called up to her, folding his arms over his chest. “So uh, why don’t you go do that? Unless of course you’re trying to be something that you’re not.”

Christiana heard a voice and she leaned over her notepad to stare down at its owner, a (handsome but clearly) tactless student, who was clearly intent on practicing his swordplay. She really had no intention of bothering him by being there, but she was also sure that her being there would really not distract him, especially if he decided not to pay attention.

"I'm sorry," She said politely. "I didn't realize that I wasn't allowed to be here. There's nothing that says otherwise." Christiana could have easily commented on the fact that she was capable of much more than working in the kitchen (though she never even boiled water), sewing, or taking care of babies (which she'd also never done before, either). She decided not to, however. It would do absolutely no good to start a fight with him. He was just a silly boy whom she'd never need speak to again after this occasion.

Round face, blue eyes, blonde hair; she was the perfect example of the word ‘angelic’. His dark eyes narrowed as she peered down at him, and a light grunt escaped from the back of his throat. As polite as her apology was, she didn’t seem very sincere, something Maks wasn’t quite sure how to deal with. She had apologized, but she wasn’t quite trembling in fear or climbing down to bow before him and beg for his forgiveness.

Maybe he should change that.

“There isn’t anything, saying you can’t be here” he conceded, voice grating for he hated to admit he was wrong. “But a training ground still isn’t a woman’s place, shouldn’t you know that? Nor is being up in a tree... are you convinced you’re a monkey? For goodness’ sakes, you’re going to get yourself laughed out of this school... and furthermore you are absolutely rude.”

He allowed only a short pause before proceeding with his scolding. “Don’t you know who I am? Prince Maksimilian in case you didn’t get the memo, and if I were you I’d watch my tone and my words a lot more closely than you currently are.”

Christiana didn't care if she looked like a monkey or if she got laughed out of the school (she wasn't particularly sure how being laughed at would mean that she had to leave). However, being called rude was quite frustrating. She said her words over in her head, trying to figure out if there was any way her words could possibly sound mean. She really was sure they weren't rude, or she wouldn't have said them. She was about to apologize for being rude and to explain why she was in this particular tree, but he continued before she could.

Prince...Maksimilian? It felt as though Christiana's heart was slowly sinking to her stomach. She hadn't met the prince since she was quite young, five perhaps. Her memories of him weren't very clear. And it was unfortunate. She would have liked to have been able to say, "how silly! You're not Prince Maksimilian! He is sweet and kind". But she couldn't, because she didn't remember Prince Maksimilian, and she wouldn't because she hated to be rude.

Somehow, she couldn't bring herself to tell him her name. Christiana really did not want him to know that she, the laughable, tree-climbing monkey, was his fiance. She felt that it would not go over very well with him at this moment. "Begging your pardon, I didn't recognize you." She also didn't say that she felt rather stuck; she was sure that if she moved, she would lose her balance and fall, which did not sound at all pleasant.

She seemed almost shocked upon finding out who he was. His name was a known one, both in the school and throughout their world. Being an heir to a throne to one of the more unique kingdoms, this probably wasn’t wasn’t something to come as a surprise. Of course, there was more to it than that, such as his aggressive reputation and often reckless and hotheaded behavior. Christiana was only getting a small sample of what he was really capable of.

Maksimilian scoffed as she said she didn’t recognize him. Sure - because that was believable. Who wouldn’t recognize him, with his strong features, height, and - psh, the details didn’t matter, the question was what mattered! There was no one around here half as handsome as him, or half as smart to boot. To him, though, it seemed like she was still being a bit rude. He’d told her who he was, given the clarification, but she refused to tell him who she was. Cowardly, much?

“And who are you, Goldilocks?” Maks asked, unfolding his arms to bend them at each of his sides in an exaggerated shrug. “I’m waiting, you know. Haven’t got all day and you’re taking up way too much of my time.”

Each time he opened his mouth, Christiana felt more disheartened. She thought about going to her room posthaste and composing a letter to her parents, begging them not to force her to marry him when they came of age. But even she knew that would be foolish. To break off an engagement with the Prince? It certainly seemed that there was no way out of this situation.

"I'm no one of consequence, Your Highness," Christiana said in a contrived voice of humility. "You needn't pay any attention to me, I'll be done soon and then I'll be on my way." Hopefully he would leave before he found out that she was stuck. She most certainly did not want assistance from him. She'd rather stay in the tree for the rest of her life than accept assistance from someone so ghastly.

Oh, for goodness’ sakes. This woman was ridiculous. What was it with women? Once they had made up their mind it seemed impossible to change them, and if they didn’t want to talk then they never, ever did. In some cases, stubbornness could be a positive trait, one that kept a person determined and unswayed - but in others, such as Christiana’s, it was nothing more than an utter annoyance and hindered any potential progress.

“If you’re no one of consequence,” he began, mocking her in a nasal tone, “then you wouldn’t be at this school to begin with. I’m not a fool, I know what sort of school I attend.” Rolling his eyes, Maks took a step back, but it was only to look up at her at a better angle. “You see, I’d leave, but we’ve still got a problem, Missy. You’re still in that tree, which means you’re still going to distract me, and I still don’t know your name. Considering I’m a prince and I’m asking you for it, I would think that asking would be equivalent to ordering... am I making myself clear?”

Suddenly, Christiana felt like crying. She didn't think about her betrothal often, but when she did, she hoped that the Prince was gentle and kind and someone who she could eventually learn to love. But as the man who stood on the ground below her stared up at her and complained about how she was going to distract him and, not in so many words, that he was not getting his way, Christiana knew that she would never, ever be able to love him. As much as she just wanted to throw her paper at his head right then and there, she did not.

Instead, with as much dignity as she could muster, she spoke in slow words. "I am the Lady Christiana Emilia Grace Paschal of Rousthera." Perhaps, she hoped, and it was a very small hope, that there was another Prince Maksimilian of a country she had never heard of. And her Prince was still very kind and gentle.

This hope was very small, indeed.

...

She was who?

Wait. Back up here. Back. Up.

... This mess was his fiance? This absolute mess of a woman was his intended?! Oh dear Lord. Maksimilian stared up at her, completely and utterly dumbfounded beyond belief. His jaw had dropped, leaving his mouth agape, but his capabilities for speech seemed to have deserted him in his time of need. This blonde, resilient, stubborn, rude woman who didn’t know her place was the woman he was going to marry. This was the woman he was going to be stuck with for the rest of his life, however long or short that may be. This was the woman who was going to take his name and rule his kingdom with him, this was the woman who was going to have his children...

And suddenly, he truly wished he had put up more resistance to this whole ‘arranged marriage’ thing. Was it too late to change his mind?

“Huh,” he began, hands falling to rest on his hipbones. “I always imagined you... prettier.” Yeah, that was the word. Maks blinked, still in something of a stupor, before he began to laugh sardonically. “Whoever thought you would make a good queen, or even a good wife for that matter, must have been really out of their mind!”

Christiana stared at him. She had never met a ruder person in her entire existence. How could he claim that she, who had tried to be as polite as she could manage, was rude when degraded her looks and capabilities in the same breath? How could anyone do that, particularly to their betrothed, of all people in the world? It was true that they had only just met for the first time in eleven years, but that was no excuse for rudeness!

"I'm afraid I haven't any choice in the matter, either, your Highness, or I would have declined the marriage offer." She meant in a polite way, in a "I know how you feel and I'm sorry" way" Yet it came out nothing like that. And she didn't realize it.

This was an outrage. This woman didn’t know her place, she didn’t know anything, she wasn’t ready for the title she would soon be assuming! What was Maks to do with a woman like this? If this school wasn’t teaching her anything, then what could? He certainly wasn’t going to take his time to do so. Just because she would end up his wife didn’t mean he had to love her, or even like her at all. All she had to do was stay out of his way, not embarrass him, and perhaps this whole ordeal wouldn’t be too bad. Maybe.

The prince bit the inside of his cheek in building rage. She would have declined the marriage offer. “You have a really bad tendency of putting your foot in your mouth, don’t you?” he growled, his visage seeming to darken at her words. Not marry him, was she insane? Why wouldn’t she want to go through it? It was an arranged marriage, but he was going to be king and he was going to make her queen, he was going to make her powerful! “You aren’t grateful at all, are you? My parents could have found anyone to marry me and they choose your family, and you want to defy their wishes? I don’t know how you were raised but apparently you were spoiled so rotten...” Maks couldn’t even finish. His blood was absolutely boiling.

“I can’t remember you ever being such a little wench,” he grumbled. Granted, they hadn’t met for a good many years, but he never would have expected her to be like this.

Suddenly, Christiana had visions of her family being sent to prison and her being taken from the school just because she had upset this overly pampered prince. And even though she really didn't wish to, she knew she had to amend this situation as well as she could. "No, no. I didn't mean that at all," She promised. "I only meant that I can sympathize with you; I dislike having my future planned out for me." Somehow, she still doubted that he would forgive her. But she would certainly have to be given credit for trying!

"I don't remember your being such a spoiled, arrogant louse." That was what Christiana would have said if she were brave or capable of coming up with something mean to say. "I didn't mean to anger you." She said, careful to mask the impatience in her voice.

Sympathize. What a useless word. There was no point to sympathy, empathy; what did any of it matter? So neither of them liked having their futures planned for them, that didn’t mean they suddenly had some sort of unbreakable bond. “Congratulations, you found one similarity between the two of us. Would you like some sort of prize?” Maks hissed the last word. “That’s probably about the only thing there is, you don’t know how overjoyed I am that I didn’t turn out like you did.”

He rolled his eyes at what he assumed was her formal apology. She was really quite awful at imploring for him to absolve her. “Oh, I’m sure you didn’t,” he mocked, shaking his head and narrowing his eyes. “Go ahead and play innocent, sweetheart. You’re lucky you’re in that tree, I swear it. Maybe it’s a good thing if you don’t ever come down. Insolent little waif...” Maks took a deep breath. “I don’t know how I’ll manage if I have to spend my life with you.”

How would she bear him for the rest of her life? His constant verbal abuse, his unfeeling comments, his lack of regard for others? How could she tolerate it? She couldn't, and that was the plain and simple truth. Perhaps when presented with the facts that they were so incompatible, their parents would change their minds and break the engagement -- with no hard feelings left over. Further contemplation was in order, Christiana realized.

"I'm afraid you misunderstand me. I'm not playing anything. I truly didn't mean to upset you!" Her arms flailed in punctuation to her words. Suddenly, Christiana felt herself losing her momentum. She wobbled back and forth precariously on the branch and her paper and pencil slid off her lap to the ground before she herself slipped completely from the branch.

“Save it,” Maks said, his voice maintaining the same hissing quality from before, and his lips lifted into a snarl to match. Sorry, sorry, sorry, blah, he didn’t care. She had already made her impression on him, and he would not have a woman like her at the throne with him. From what he had gathered so far, he almost worried she would turn out to be traitorous - in fact, he wouldn’t put it past her to somehow commit treason. Stupid girl... this was why women, this was why no one, could be trusted.

As her arms flailed, Maksimilian’s eyes widened, for he knew what was likely to come next. Acting out of body’s natural instinct rather than the want to purposely allow her to fall, Maks got out of the way, leaping to the right and bending his back with his arms lifting into the air. He winced for a moment, staring at her, before his hands found his pants-pockets and he began to laugh. At first it was a chuckle, but it quickly built into something stronger and far more mean.

“You’re a little klutz, aren’t you?! Now isn’t that endearing?!” Maks doubled over at the waist, staring at her with a red face and mouth wide as more hysterical laughter poured out of him. “Did you have a nice trip, a nice fall, Christiana? Oh goodness, maybe you would at least provide some comic relief to my life...”

He just let her fall. What kind of person just let a girl, the more delicate (at least by his way of thinking, apparently) sex, fall from a tree without attempting to catch her? Thank goodness it was a low branch, or she surely would have been dead upon contact. On second thought, it was a shame the branch wasn't higher. It would have been a nice alternative to having to spend her life with him.

Mustering all her dignity once again, Christiana stood slowly, hoping that her limbs were in no way damaged. They seemed to be all right, however; she wasn't bleeding or in much pain. She brushed the dirt off her skirt. "It was quite pleasant," she said calmly. "Thank you for your attempt to catch me." Although her words were sarcastic, the needed tone was missing from her voice. Sarcasm was something she had never managed.

"I'm glad to do you some service, Your Highness." Christiana smiled sweetly, deciding that if she couldn't hit him, she could kill him with kindness.

Still laughing so much it hurt, so much that he was bent over almost completely, Maksimilian paid no mind to her as she got to her feet. Watching her fall had been completely worth this burst of sudden energy. It had been the most hysterical thing he had witnessed in ages, and the fact that she had deserved it only made it sweeter. After a good few more minutes, Maks finally began forcing himself to calm down. He wiped at his eyes, for tears had gathered along his lashes, as emasculating as it was for him to realize that. Luckily she hadn’t seen.

“Oh come on, don’t be like that,” Maks said, almost seeming a tad more pleasant. “I would have caught you, but I’m pretty sure you might have very well crushed me. You look a bit too heavy for me to lift, I wouldn’t want to get squashed into the ground.” Maks took a deep breath. Back to their bickering, and now he was actually looking forward to it. “Besides, I’m sure you’ve got some sort of... germs... or disease... or something... I wouldn’t dirty myself by touching you.”

Maks shook his head. “Probably the only good thing you’re good for, woman - amusement,” he stated with a grin.

Christiana felt a weird sensation. It was the sensation that she would soon break and begin yelling at him -- something she had never done before in her life, not once. That thought was a little terrifying actually, and she took in a gulp of hair, wondering at the thought that she might actually raise her voice at someone. But thinking about it calmed her, and she no longer felt like yelling at him.

"Actually, it would be more likely for you to give me a disease. As my previous living conditions were slightly inferior to yours, I would have built up a stronger immunity to disease, which means that I would be able to fight illness off better than you. So you would be more likely to fall sick here and pass it on to me, than the other way around." Christiana explained sweetly. "And I believe you're right. You don't seem very strong at all to me. I'm sure you wouldn't be capable of supporting my weight."

Despite the fact that this was probably the rudest she had ever been in her life, Christiana's entire disposition, her voice, her expression, were all polite and sweet, as though he were not bothering her at all.

... What? Every word she just said about disease and illness passed through one ear and out the other, perplexing him slightly. Everything she said made sense, at least up until the last part. “Um, I thought you just said you had a higher immunity, Miss Scientist,” he retorted, lifting both of his brows and staring at her as if she had two heads. “So if I got sick it wouldn’t really matter. Unless it was your fault. Then I would be absolutely furious and say you were trying to kill me.” Maks nodded, as if this was entirely factual, and as if he had even planned this out.

When she jabbed at his strength, however, Maks took it as a blow to his masculinity, and he looked down at her. A full foot or so taller than her, he was perhaps more than a bit intimidating. He stalked closer, staring down at her and sucking on the inside of his lower lip. “You wanna put that to the test, Goldie? I’ll lift you like a sack of potatoes if I have to. None of that bridal-style crap, gimme a break.”
