The day began ordinarily enough; Sawtooth awoke and made a quick round of the territory, seeing to it that everything was in its proper place: wolves, trees... that peculiar little bush she passed and marked whenever she made a trip 'round the borders. Nothing abnormal going on at all. Her belly was swollen as the full moon. It slowed her down a little, but all-in-all, Sawtooth was still Sawtooth: gruff, blunt, a dictator in wolf's fur.
Sawtooth had been mid-way through her rounds and the sun had been high when she felt a most horrid sensation in her abdomen. Well, it wasn't actually a sensation so much as it was a ...cramp. No, not even a cramp! This was something else altogether! She had known she was close, but... she wasn't entirely a fool, and even Sawtooth did not force herself to continue her round when she felt this pain deep in her belly.

It was time.

She had turned back quickly enough, moving as quickly as she dared without breaking into a run. She was too thick in the middle for running to be comfortable, though she was still fully capable of moving at high speeds if need be. At least she liked to think so. She was deeper into the Pine Forest when another pain shot through her, this time a little worse than before. It forced the alpha female to slow her pace, to stop, to nearly gasp aloud with suddenness and ferocity of it. It wasn't like the time that bear tore through her hip. Not even like the sensation of her brother's fangs raking cruelly across her face...
And that was where she would be found now. The densite was not so far away: a few minutes' walk, if not a little less! But this pain was a warning of what was to come. If Sawtooth was afraid, it didn't show on her powerful face. One thing did, though. One thing showed well enough, despite her attempt to mask it: pain. But as the... episode ebbed away, like some awful tide, even that disappeared from the alpha's face.
Sawtooth's pregnancy had moved along easily enough. Sure, there were a few small things -- a little less energy, the desire to eat more... those things were trifles. Bothered her only a little. She had done little thinking about when the time actually came for her to birth the pups. She had chosen a special den, just for herself and her future children, one separate from hers and Amos's den together. It was just... the pain. She wasn't sure if she had expected it or not. She had only thought of having puppies. Not of the pain of the labor. The work of it. She hoped they would be obedient puppies: she didn't want to have to punish them all the time-
She noticed a tightening in her belly; it would be time for another pain soon. She needed to get to the densite. So the alpha female allowed herself a soft sigh, then picked up her paws to continue forward... where was Amos, anyway? She needed to make sure he knew. She felt, somehow, that she would need him to protect her during this time. She would be weak. She hated to think of that, but she would be weak... and while she didn't mistrust the wolves that had become dear members of Blacktooth Pack... instinct told her to hold her own flesh and blood closer than those strangers whom she had come to know in her lands...

As Sawtooth's time continued to get closer Amos was having a harder and harder time letting her go out and do her normal duties. She insisted upon scouting the border, and even left before he had woken that morning. He had just gotten the sleep from his eyes when he noticed her absence, so e had gone to retrieve her. It had finally reached his breaking point where he would no longer be letting her leave his sight. It was too bad that he had not thought to do this yesterday. So the alpha male began to search for his dear mate, and noticed she had been doing the usual, until suddenly her trail took a sharp turn and headed back towards the den site. A worried look came to his face. This is not like her.

He hurried as fast as he could, and it was not long before he found her again, though he had thought the time longer he had worried so. His big paws made plenty of noise as he found himself by his swollen mate's side. He whimpered a bit and noticed she was not quite as comfortable as he would hav eliked her. Even though it would not show in her face, or even in her posture he could tell she did not feel as though she were in her fittest shape. He let his muzzle come up and nuzzle her own as he looked to see how much farther then den was. The place of refuge could not have ben but a sprint away, but he knew that Sawtooth was in no shape to sprint, so he stayed by her side and leased her his shoulder to lean her much larger body upon. He let his mouth come closer to her ear and whispered calmly though he didn't feel it, "My love we are but a few steps away."

She knew Amos would never let here hear the end of this. The further along she had gotten into her pregnancy, the more protective he seemed to get. Not that his protectiveness was a bad quality at all, it was simply that Sawtooth’s mate was almost over-protective, and frankly it was beginning to annoy her, just a little. She loved him, needed him, wanted him… but she needed space to do her own things, and sometimes she found his presence overbearing. But she might’ve glimpsed as much in the way he had courted her. That was part of the reason she had chosen him, wasn’t it?
Sawtooth’s head whipped around as the sound of pawsteps crunching over the ground alerted her to another’s arrival. Needless to say, the alpha female isn’t the least bit surprised to see Amos there, padding towards her with unhidden concern in his eyes. His first audible sound was a whimper, and it softened Sawtooth enough that she sighed and seemed to sag a little with relief. In allowing herself to relax a little, however, that wave of pain seemed to come all that much sooner, and almost at once she gasped faintly with the sharpness and tightness of it. It even made her back hurt; her muscles pulled or pushed – it didn’t matter what they were doing, she was certain this was it. She was going into labor! And she wasn’t at all certain whether or not she wanted Amos to see her like this… and yet, as his fur brushed against hers, she instinctively leaned into him, shaking her head slowly.
”How long have you been following me?” Sawtooth rasped, looking at her mate out of the corner of one brilliantly-colored eye. Her voice was a little more strained than usual, but as she was Sawtooth – and that was all the explanation needed – it was a well-controlled note, all things considered.
Seeming to recover somewhat from the pain, Sawtooth pulled away from Amos to stand on her own weight again. The pain was ebbing away once more, and she didn’t want to need his support right now. ”I will be fine…” For the first time, it seemed Sawtooth was telling a blatant lie: her gaze was indirect, not straightforward and powerful as it usually was. She was afraid, and this was perhaps one of the most visible displays of this emotion Amos had likely ever seen from her… and even this fear wasn’t the same way most wolves would have shown it.
She didn’t move forward right away, although the sense of urgency she was beginning to feel meant she would have to move soon.

The alpha male shook his head at the hard headed female. She was a grand leader, but ugh she had such a thick skull sometimes. He had been trying to make her stay in or at least near the den for days now, and each time she convinced him other wise. He knew that he was starting to annoy her, but it was for her and the pups own good. Once they were born, which would be in the very near future, he would leave her in peace. Though if they decided to have more pups next year then he would be right back in to bad habits. And maybe then she would actually listen to him. He doubted it though.

"I have been on your trail since I found you gone from the den. I thought today would be the day I actually kept you in the den. Maybe it would have been a good idea."

Then again he had heard that if the female walks about before the pups were born that it would make for an easier birth. He hoped that that would be right because she had done quite a lot of walking. Amos had watched her as a pain shot through her and while he watched he thought that his heart might break then and there. While she went through physical pain he went through emotional pain. He felt her take her weight off of his shoulder as they proceeded to her new den. He would miss her terribly as she and the pups staid in their own den, there was a good chance that he would be staying outside her den during the night for a while.

He trudged forward and now could see that the den was only feet from his paws.

Actually listen? To Amos? Sawtooth would take her own counsel into consideration first, most likely. Then his, secondly, and the pack’s, thirdly. Not that she didn’t respect her mate’s opinion: she loved him dearly and his thoughts did matter to her, but, well, Sawtooth was a very strong-willed she-wolf. She could be arrogant, or at least place her own opinions before that of others’.
Amos’s answer is satisfactory, and yet brings forth a soft sigh from his mate. Then she smiled, turning her head so that she might look at him fully, rather than from the edge of her vision.
”Keep me in the den? Me?” her voice was laced lightly with amusement, and her eyes glittered along with it before growing deathly serious again. ”My duties as an alpha are far more important than lazing about in the den, despite my con-“ her voice caught in her throat for a moment as she felt the pain again, a little more unexpectedly, before she could finish her word: “-dition.”
“To the den.”

And that marked the end of her speaking. She padded as lightly as she could by her mate’s side, avoiding his gaze where she could without looking entirely afraid or as if the pain bothered her so severely. She would be strong, right up until she could not be strong anymore. And that moment was, perhaps, coming very soon; a dreadful moment when even Sawtooth might whimper in agony. If only she had thought so far ahead when she mated with Amos… alas, she would not have any pups at all, and she would not have him as a mate.
But she did not regret the decision. Not right now, at least.
The silvery she-wolf passed under pine and beyond boulder until she recognized the secluded den she had chosen to birth her pups in. It was a comfortable little hole in the earth, nestled – like many of the dens here – in the crook of a mighty pine. The tree’s roots tried to obscure the entrance, but to no avail.
Sawtooth was beginning to pant when she trotted – the fastest she had moved since the pains had begun – toward her chosen nesting site. She stopped before entering however, so that she could look back upon her chosen one. Her yellow eyes sought his and she chose then to speak some of her fears:
”I have heard stories of she-wolves whose lives were lost when bearing their young…”
She realized the weight of her words perhaps too late: she knew Amos was a worrier and speaking so darkly might cause him unnecessary burden. But the words are in the air, too late to be snatched out of it again. Regretful of that much, at least, the alpha female’s head snapped back around as she lowered nearly to her belly to enter the little den. Her rump disappears within a matter of seconds, darkness and earth embracing her form entirely from sight.
On the inside, the tunnel proceeded only a few feet before widening, but it was entirely dark inside. The roots concealed most of the light of day from entering. Sawtooth was isolated; completely alone in that den… and she could feel the readiness of her pups deep inside her womb: they wanted out today.[/b]

Sawtooth's response to his wanting to keep her in the den was less than satisfactory, but really he couldn't have expected much more from her. She decided what she wanted to do and really he didn't have much say so but he did try. He hoped she knew that he only had her best interests in his mind, while still thinking of the pack. Though because he did have a tiny bit of selfishness in him he would have rather she be safe and in perfect health in the den than if she had run off and hurt herself or the pups because she was doing something for the pack. "You do realize that there are two alphas...." He said this quietly and was sure that she could not hear him. Sawtooth had gone into another convulsion and he let another sympathetic whimper slip from his mouth. Her decision to finally retire to the den amused him a bit he didn't know why, maybe it was just how she said it... anyway.

He let her stay by his side as she made her way to the den she had found. She would not be, to his misfortune, staying in the same den as they had shared for the past few months. Maybe it was better this way, she would be able to take care of the pups more easily plus the den was deeper so the babies would be safer farther in the ground. So long as the pups were safe he would give up staying with Sawtooth for a while. She would have her paws quite full for a while. He was getting so excited, their children would be here in such a small amount of time. Amos was all ready for her to enter the den that he was surprised when she suddenly turned around. ”I have heard stories of she-wolves whose lives were lost when bearing their young…” He looked at her for a moment, stunned, but got over it quickly. "My love, you are too stubborn to die from birthing your pups. Much too strong for something such as that to occur." He nuzzled her a bit before she let herself slip into the den. He ddin't follow, mostly because it was such a small space and she would need her room. "I await your return." His soft voice echoed into the den.

The gentle, loving voice of her mate echoed in Sawtooth’s ears as she moved to the back of the den. There, hidden away from the prying eyes of the pack, the alpha’s labor began in earnest.
The pain wasn’t so terrible at first. Just the sudden pangs she had felt when she was outside. But as she rested longer in that earth-scented den she became increasingly uncomfortable as her pains came more regularly and seemed to last a little longer each time. Not only that, but the pain seemed to get worse. Her belly would grow so hard that she felt herself rising off of the ground a little, and resting on her side was no longer favorable.
The minutes passed. Ten. Fifteen. Twenty.
Sawtooth was panting softly by then, her yellow eyes narrowed with pain. Her water had broken, signifying the imminent arrival of her first litter… fear gripped her heart as the pain came again, worse than ever before. Still, the brave she-wolf suppressed any whimper that threatened to escape her throat. That was how she spent her time in that dark birthing den, keeping little track of time – only knowing that it was horribly painful and seemed to stretch on into eternity. Then, with a painful force, there came the first pup.
The slimy thing slid out easily, onto the dirt. Instinct drove Sawtooth to tend to this special pup – her firstborn – by chewing through umbilical cord and licking her pup vigorously with a smooth, pink tongue. Only when the first shrill cry of the she-pup rose into the darkness of the den did Sawtooth cease her licking and a strangely content sigh escaped her maw. She could not see her daughter, but she knew it was a daughter, and Sawtooth knew her daughter was immensely beautiful. Before the contractions could begin again, the alpha guided the pup to her teats, then relaxed momentarily. The smell of blood was thick here. The smell of birth.
It might’ve been an hour by the time the contractions had intensified again. But the birth was proceeding like a frequently-performed ritual: everything was going according to plan and could not have been more perfect.
The second pup slid free only a half hour – give or take a few minutes – after his sister. A male pup, her special, first-male pup, second-born. She treated him as gently as she had his sister, then relaxed again.
In that time, the birth seemed to abate, just for a while, and Sawtooth panted softly. She wanted water. But she could not leave now. The strange, new feeling of pups pawing at her belly – now from without rather than from within – was comforting and stirred strong, before-unknown feelings inside the stubborn she-wolf. Already, she knew she loved these little beings more than anything else in the world. More, even, than Amos. At least it felt that way.

”Amos? Are you still there?” Sawtooth called softly while she could. She waited for a reply. She didn’t want him to enter – likely all hell would break loose if he attempted to enter now.

She listened for a reply, then attention returned to the matter at hand as the pain returned, and this time it seemed far worse than it had been the last two times. Even Sawtooth could not hold back a whimper… a whimper that turned into a growl of agonized pain. The pups already at her side could not hear, but felt the new rumble. One of them – the male, Sawtooth thought – began to cry softly before latching onto a nipple again.
Sawtooth rested her head against the cool earth of the den, ignoring the tree root that poked her torn ear.
”Amos…” Sawtooth whispered, her voice scarcely rising above the pain she felt at that moment. There was no room for her mate to enter, even if she had wanted him inside.
Hers was a world of pain; time slowed down and she could hardly see through her agony. She could not hear or think, or even blink. She realized, as another pup was born, that she had been holding her breath, and her den seemed to sway even in the blackness of its cover.
Once she recovered from her light-headedness, Sawtooth realized something was wrong this time, but she could hardly think beyond that before further pain struck her body and she threw her head back. Her fangs were bared, though none could see. A drawn-out whine, the likes of which had never left Sawtooth’s maw before. Silently, she pleaded for whatever force in Nature might aid her. The worse was yet to come, and she sensed it… this was wrong, unnatural. Something was horridly wrong.
The alpha gasped.
The labor was proceeding slower now, but the pain was not easing. There was another pup to be born. Sawtooth could feel it. But could not expel it…
Through the pain, she tried to tend to the most-recently born pup, but even as she did so, she found she could not even twist around to reach it… but she had to! It would die if she didn’t… and so, the stubborn she-wolf fought the pain – a pain worse than the wounds she had ever received in life before – and pressed her nose to the newest pup. She licked it like the others. She expected it to move, to squirm, to cry out… but nothing. Not even a twitch of life. Absently, Sawtooth registered that the pup was stillborn. Miscarriage was common in her family. Stillborns… she could not think back far enough to wonder if any of her siblings had ever been stillborn before pain wracked her body again, her stomach tightening so much she felt it might implode.
”Amos!” she gasped her mate’s name and wished he hadn’t. He could likely hear her, and she didn’t want to cause him any more alarm. He was an easy wolf to worry…
More than an hour had passed now. The day was passing along. Sawtooth wondered when it would be over. She hurt. She wanted the pain to go away…
Then at last she felt it slip free of its prison. The last pup.
The alpha was still in immense pain when she twisted around. She could smell and feel more blood than before. More than what had accompanied the other pups. But she tended to this pup as she had the first two and the third… and she hoped that, unlike the third, this one would move. She did not want to experience the emptiness of the Still One. Not again.
For a long time, she licked the little pup… a male. He did not move. For the longest time, he did not budge, and Sawtooth nearly gave up… when the softest squeak left his little – she imagined it was darkly-colored – maw. Carefully, she moved this small, frightfully weak pup to her belly to drink.
Her belly hurt and she was so tired and sore. But she sensed it was done at last…
