A long journey, so far, and Strychnine had neither seen nor sniffed any trace of a fellow wolf. Not until he crossed through the mountain passes, that is. A pack was some ways off, near the base of the mountain, perhaps. Hopefully their territory did not reach all the way around to the other side; he wasn't much interested in running across a group of strange wolves. Not just yet. Large paws carried him around heavy snow drifts and over large boulders with little trouble. The arctic ran through his veins, and snow was not alien to the male. In fact, his physique was well adapted to suit it: long, white fur, broad paws, and a large build. All common traits of northern wolves, to survive the snow. Though, Strychnine was exceptional in his size - a tundra titan in height. Though, his muscle mass was yet to be proportionally developed. A work-in-progress. Pale eyes matched the grey rock of the cliff, carefully picking his way along the boulders with at an easy gait. He was following an old goat path, no doubt. While he kept watch to avoid slipping, the wolf's ears remained attentive for any other signs of life. Or falling debris that might strike him off balance and send him flying from the mountain side to a crushing fate. 'No need to be thinking like that,' the white wolf reminded himself as he rounded a high corner. Strychnine slowed his pace and came to a stop as he came around the face of the mountain. His path dropped down at a slope. The trail had been like this for a while, taking him up and down through twists and straights. Yet from this vantage point, he could see his way off the mountains, and a red-banked river beyond. A tuneful wind from the south brought no pack scent; a relief. Despite the low whistle of the mountain, the land seemed silent and still. Perhaps even mournful. 'Or is that my own perception?' Strychnine questioned, internally. For a moment, the scars that marked his shoulder and dragged toward his chest seemed to ache. As if to remind him of the cause for his solitude. Alone in the mountains, Strychnine grimaced. Then he continued on his way to greener pastures. Hopefully. Keeping in his mind's eye the lay-out of the mountain, the wolf found his way moving toward the distant river. He was less than an hour away; not that a wolf knew much about hours or minutes. Strychnine would surely reach the red banks by noon, at the rate he had been traveling. The thought of water sounded appealing. |

Hawk flattened her ears against her head. This incessant whistling, singing, howling or whatever-the-hell-you-want-to-call-it was driving her absolutely insane. Whatever had possessed her to climb the mountains in the first place had long ago flown out the window and Hawk found herself completely regretting the decision. Her lips curled in frustration as she snapped at a nearby rock. This action only served to bruise her poor little nose, and in response, she flew into an out-right frenzy, digging and pouncing on the rock with complete disregard for the dangerous footing. Hence, it wouldn't have come as a surprise to anyone that her back feet proceeded to slip, sending the petite creature backwards (as she had been rearing at the time). A shocked look overcame her face, a look that quickly morphed into one of annoyance as Hawk twisted her body so she would land on her side. She skidded briefly along a small pathway before she came up against another rock that provided enough resistance to keep her from continuing. Hawk stood and shook herself vigorously, snorting in annoyance. She eyeballed the rock she had previously attacked, now several feet away from her, her yellow eyes narrowed into slits. Then, much like Arnold Schwarzenegger (though she had no clue who that was), Hawk pointed at the rock with a paw in a way that suggested 'I'll be back.' She then tossed her nose up in a prude manner and turned to start heading back down the mountain. However, since her nose was in the air, her eyes were clearly not watching her footing (as they almost always failed to do), and Hawk did indeed slip once more. This time, her sliding path would zip her from behind her boulder and a few feet in front of Strychnine, whom she had not noticed due to that stupid whistling wind that wound its way through the mountains. Hawk came to a stop on her backside, just in time to notice the white wolf. A big smile broke out onto her face as she remained nestled on the somewhat slick ice/snow surface. She waggled a paw at him. "Yo." |

Strychnine heard the crashing of rocks, and ears pricked toward the sound. A short way above him, he saw part of the mountain slide away. Hackles stiffened in alarm, and the male took several careful paces back. Keen eyes of stone searched the cliff directly above him for any slide that might tumble directly on top of him, but all was clear. Cautious, the male watched for any additional slides. His intended path would cross under where stones and small boulders had just sprayed over, and the white wolf did not care to rush into a second slide if he could help it. Sure enough, before the echo of the last fall could die-off, there was a second upheaval. Strychnine took another two paces back, watching the second hailing of rock, ice, snow, and...fur? Strychnine's legs stiffened slightly, and he felt a twitch in his lip. He knew the fur for what it was: another wolf. The mountains - full of high and low places - and the shifting winds made properly scenting a real trick. Yet the winds favored them both, now, as Strychnine was brought her scent. Her scent. In an instant, Strychnine's posture relaxed (save for a readiness to spring, should the land give way a third time). The tall male shook himself, clearing away what dust may have settled over his fur, as well as the unease that meeting a rogue brought him. Strychnine held little tolerance for male rogues, these days. What fortune it was that he should meet a female, instead! Quick as lightning, a flash of silver seemed to shine in his grey eyes and settled there, gladly. The somber mentality of the wolf gave-way to an open-maw grin, and Strychnine favored the petite wolfess with a wag of his tail. "Greetings! And my, what an entrance! Do you always intend such flashy arrivals, or was that just for me?" he laughed, nose pointing toward the origin of the landslide. "Maybe just a fluke?" he cocked his head, twisting an ear to the female as he looked her up an down. "I don't suppose you've been harmed, have you?" the wolf inquired, his voice silky without any loss of masculinity. The wolf took a few paces closer, sniffing the air. "You don't appear injured; I don't scent any blood. Then again, I've little experience in healing. If you can get up, I would suggest we move a ways away from here. No sense in waiting for another slide." For a moment, the wolf mused over her condition, and then suddenly remembered himself. "Oh, I nearly forgot! I called Strychnine," he offered, smiling. "And you must be...?" Edited by Raevion, Tue Feb 17, 2009 4:40 pm.

Hawk immediately sensed no danger (although she was quite lax to begin with). This male was different from the two she had already met- she could see that clearly. Thus, while Srychnine spoke, she remained lazily on her back, eyeballing him from behind pastel yellow slits. The only aspect she found slightly annoying about him was his incessant blabbering. Did the male even know how to shut his mouth, or was it on auto-run? However, that detail was lost the moment she heard his name. At first, Hawk could only blink in astonishment, and then...she broke out into obnoxious laughter. It was sincere- she honestly thought his name was a joke. Hawk didn't laugh for long, rather, her laughter quickly died in her chest but an idiotic grin remained. Slowly, she picked herself up and shook the snow from her fur. "Was your mother crazy? Or did she have a speech impediment?" Hawk smirked towards him, her head cocked, her eyes twinkling, "Because, mutt, your name is totally screwed up." She was being honest, as Hawk was known for. She also disregarded all of his previous speech, as she didn't particularly care to state the obvious...plus she was feeling quite lazy at the moment. But, since Hawk somewhat liked Strychnine, she decided she could get past the name...if she altered it. "I'm going to call you Mutt." It wasn't so much a request; more like a statement. However, it held absolutely no hostility. He was a mutt, and he should have already accepted this. She shook her fur again, distaste for the wind crossing her face, "I'm Hawk. Pleasure to meet you." It was, for the moment. He appeared interesting, to say the least. |

OOC: Sorry this took so long; homework was more than I expected! Strychnine raised a questioning brow to the laughter of the female, broad ears cupping forward with curiosity. Did he say something funny? The white wolf looked to each side of him, as if she might be laughing at something else. But unless she was crazy and found mountain rubble to be hilarious, there was nothing else to laugh at. He didn't come to any understanding until the little lady finally found her voice. Even then, he had to take a moment to puzzle over her words. "Crazy?" he frowned slightly and tilted his head, too. The wolf took on a thoughtful look as he mused, considering the stranger's words. In a quick moment, he came to a conclusion. His name was pretty screwy. With that settled, he flashed another grin. "Your words are true enough, and if this is so, then the name suits me. Strychnine the Screwy," he laughed, giving a little mock bow for effect. Though, Strychnine found without much delay, she had chosen him another title. "Mutt?" he repeated, making to sign of having been offended. "Another name to suit me. Is it that obvious?" he asked, looking down his legs to his paws, and then back to his shortish tail (which was less obvious, thanks to his long fur). He turned forward once again and smiled when he was finally granted her name. "A pleasure to meet you, as well, Lady Hawk," he nodded. With a pause, he glanced up the mountain side again, as if he'd just remembered it. "Uh, perhaps we ought to move along some," he suggested, looking ahead to the path behind Hawk. "Ladies first. Though, if you are distrusting, I will gladly go ahead of you." What she might be distrusting of, be it him or the mountain, he did not specify. With a small delay, he gave Hawk the chance to make her choice, and then carried forward (assuming she did, in fact, go anywhere). "I hate to be a bother with predictable questions, but are you new to these lands or have you been around a tree or two? I was just passing over the mountains to the south, myself. And feeling a tad thirsty at that. The river beyond doesn't seem to far, if you'd be interested in joining me for a drink," he rambled, just a bit. Strychnine was a bit talkative at times, but it wasn't generally for the sake of talking. He usually had other intentions, such as distracting himself from bothersome thoughts. Or just to be friendly and get to know others. In this case, it was both. "Forgive me if I talk your ears off; I've not seen a fellow wolf in a few months," he commented with a dismissive wag of his tail. |

Hawk stretched once as he spoke, her body suggesting she had already become disinterested in his words, when in fact it was the opposite. This male struck her as incredibly interesting. The fact that he could laugh her words off with an amusing little smile in his eyes was enough to keep her in his vicinity. She mentally rolled her eyes as she thought briefly of the other two males she had met, both of which had been absolute bores. "Mk." Her reply to his suggestion was brief. She hated the windy mountains anyway. The faster they could get out of there, the better. Thus, without further delay, Hawk turned and started carelessly picking her way down the steep slopes. She showed as much care with placing her feet as a mere infant would with its first few steps. Of course, her carefree manner did lend to some missteps, one of which landed her face first into the ground during the middle of his rambling. Hawk hadn't been paying much attention to his words - as it was hard for her to pay attention to much at all - but as she picked herself up, she caught the last bit. Hawk shook away the momentary pain caused from her bruising, a stupid-looking grin on her face as she continued down the slope, her ears rotated back towards the mutt, "Really? That's unfortunate. Other wolves are such much fun to play with." She hrmed underneath her breath, "Well, not here though. I met some idiotic dumbass mutt like yourself that has some ego problem he probably inherited. Oh, and some other short-tailed thing that even depressed the air around himself." Hawk swatted at a nearby rock and grinned as it was flung off into the air and tumbled down the slope, "But, some socialization is better than none. Besides, the odd ones are much more fun to play with, don't you agree?" |
