Name: Allison (Allie) Richards Canon/Original: Original Alias/Codename: Sylph Age: 18 Height: 5'6" Weight: 118 lbs. Place of birth: Garland, Texas, USA Place of residence: X-Mansion Affiliations: X-Students Appearance: Allison is rather short, thin and lightweight. She has very fair skin that is adorned with a mass of freckles covering a body that is neither overfed nor overworked. Her eyes are green, and her hair - which might fall straight and just past the shoulders if it weren't for the wind so constantly billowing around her - bears a light shade of red. She refuses to wear make-up, saying that she would rather show the world her real face rather than a mask of paint. Her nose is a bit on the large side. When it comes to clothing, Allie prefers to keep it simple and casual. Usually she can be seen in jeans and some sort of T-shirt or tanktop and a blue denim jacket. On hotter days, however, she will do without the jacket and may prefer shorts. Because of the nature of her powers, she avoids wearing anything overly baggy, and especially avoids wearing dresses or skirts. She can often be seen with earphones in her ears, their wires dangling toward the mp3 player that is kept in one of her pockets. Personality: Allison has an artistic mind. She is a lover of music of all sorts, often enjoying singing or humming along with whatever she may happen to be listening to...even if she doesn't happen to know the lyrics, or the song she's listening to doesn't have any at all. She is also very much a fan of the written word, and will often launch herself into a realm of fantasy with a good book for hours on end. These are the sorts of qualities that she values above all else in her video games of choice as well; while there is something satisfying about a well-done, action-packed game, she truly enjoys herself the most when she encounters a game that is both well-written and well-composed. These are the ways that she engages herself when it's time to escape the worries and responsibility of the day. Allie is both frightened of and curious about her own abilities as a mutant. She has known about them for some years, and in private found it an entertaining distraction to mess around with them while simultaneously increasing her ability to control it. Socially she tries to keep her distance from others, but not due to a desire to be a loner - in fact, she is by nature quite a friendly person (which tends to result in failure to keep away from other students). Allison fears that if she gets close to other people again, then she will only end up hurting them one day with an uncontrolled burst of her powers, as she had before. Allison has an active imagination, which has a side effect of causing her to space out every once in a while to daydream about some thing or another. Occasionally she likes to write her dreamings into short stories; in fact, from the time she discovered her powers she had began to write about the heroic exploits of a character she called 'Sylph' (hence her alias) who had powers similar to her own, only more controlled. Powers: Air/Wind. When in complete control, she can create individual, concentrated gusts of wind that reach up to 130 mph (approx. 209 km/h), enough to lift some cars off the ground or uproot large trees. If she wanted to affect a larger area though, she can create the equivalent of a Category EF0 tornado (based on the Enhanced Fujita Scale) and control it reasonably well. However, as her mood shifts toward emotional extremes the amount of power she can exert increases, while her ability to control it decreases. In fact, the wind surrounding her can often be used as a telltale sign of how she is feeling at that moment. When she doesn't choose to control it, there is always a constant breeze that surrounds her, even indoors. The breeze grows more intense in proportion to her emotional state at any given time, and with it the difficulty of controlling it increases as well. Power potential: The height of her power will be reached when she can create winds up to 500 mph not only at will, but under complete control. Other skills: Allison is a talented singer of a variety of styles, and an avid video gamer. She also enjoys writing. Equipment: None. History: Allison grew up in the relative safety of a suburban neighborhood located near Dallas. Her household, while not a wealthy one by any means, was a loving one. They got by well enough, but with little extra money for the added luxuries that so many enjoy. Allie never grew up watching TV like many children; instead her parents would encourage more intellectual growth throughout her youth. Her father helped nurture a love of the written word in the girl, while her mother would teach her to sing. In this way she would be raised in an atmosphere of family togetherness which would give her the self-confidence she would need when she was finally old enough to go to school and spend much of her days away from her parents. At about the age of 12, she began to notice the wind. It started simple and small; someone may mention that it would be nice to have a breeze to cool them off, and one would start. Eventually she would come to realize that the wind would start, stop, or change direction just from her thinking about it. By this point she knew well of the existance of mutants, and that most regular people, including her own family, don't trust them. At first she was in denial; she didn't want to believe that she could be one of those mutants that she herself had grown to fear. However, she was extremely lucky in that the first manifestation of her power was subtle enough to not be noticed, and after the denial eventually wore off curiosity kicked in. She started teaching herself to control it, and managed to keep it hidden from her friends and family as time wore on. More time would go by. With a love of singing instilled by her mother, Allie would join the school choir in 7th grade. She would make many friends through the organization, including a slightly older girl named Reina who would become her best friend. Reina would share with Allie the wonders of video gaming, while Allie would in turn introduce her new friend to many of her favorite books and authors. Their friendship would continue strongly for years to come, until the end of Allison's junior year of high school; Reina had graduated. That was a bittersweet summer for them, as Reina was set to move off to college in the fall. It would culminate in one final party between friends a week before all of those who had graduated were to start going their separate ways. Her parents were gone for the weekend, and so the girls and their friends had the house all to themselves. They would end up breaking into her parents' liquor supplies, intending to make this last get-together a memorable one. As it would turn out, alcohol and mutant powers don't mix well. Although she hadn't intended to overdo it, Allison had a few drinks too many. The more she drank, however, the more trouble she would have controlling her wind powers. As she wobbled through the kitchen, she hardly noticed the wind that had begun to pick up, although her friends would note with some concern that the wind was picking up indoors. This changed quickly, however, when the empty glass she had just set on the counter flew off and into the wall, startling her as she realized what had just happened. Allie panicked as she listened to her friends' confused chatter as they searched for the open window they thought to be the cause. Soon, she feared, she would be discovered - just as soon as they they realized that there weren't any windows open, and that it was in fact quite calm outside. They would begin the worry, and then surely they would come to realize the source... As the fear rose, so did the wind, and the increasingly strong reaction would cause her to panic even more. Before long the party had turned into a disaster; people were taking cover, objects were flying everywhere, and poor Allison was caught at the center, cowering to her knees, almost begging the winds to stop as her fear caused them to strengthen. On that calm summer evening, a tornado hit Garland. News reports all over the state would cover the disaster the next day: "Out of nowhere last night a tornado strikes the city of Garland. Dozens of homes were devastated, injuring over 150 people, with five known fatalities so far..." When a disaster strikes suddenly in unusual circumstances, there is only one possible explanation: a mutant must have been responsible. Authorities set out in search of the monster responsible for the deaths of the five recent high school graduates, the injuries of so many others, and the destruction of so much property, and with Allison being found at ground zero not only alive but without a scratch, suspicions turned her way. Fortunately, someone else was watching too. That day she and her family were contacted by representatives from Professor Xavier's school for mutants. They offered to take her somewhere safe where she could learn to control her powers, and where, they promised, she would be understood and accepted for what she is. Although she and her parents were reluctant to accept, in the end there was little choice considering the alternatives. So it happened that Allison came to join the school for mutants. When it came time to adopt an alias, she thought back to stories she had written when fantasizing as a child about her own powers over wind; she wrote stories about a character she had called Sylph who had similar powers to her own. That, she decided, would be her alias; Sylph, a spirit of the wind. For a year she has remained at the school, deepening her control over her powers. She was depressed for a time, but has since grown out of it. Instead she forges ahead, hoping that one day, like the fictional Sylph she had written about, she may perform heroic acts. Maybe this way she might atone for the disaster she caused. |
