The Tournament is a spectacle of violence held on Crossroads for the entertainment of the masses. People from many universes enter into the tournament to fight each other and be named grand champion. It was started by the Liandri Corporation from the Unreal Universe and began it's life as a small and simply coliseum where two fighters entered into single combat with one another. It has since expanded to epic proportions. The primary arena is used for trial fights and the grand championship battles, but most of the fighting takes place at various locations all over Crossroads. These locations are all linked together via a series of teleporters. Fighting takes place in some specially built arenas but most of them are in merely abandoned locals, like mines, factories, ghost towns and such. Some even take place on ships in orbit. Modifications have been done to make sure the contestants cannot leave the combat zone and weapons are hidden around the area for the contestants to pick up and use. The contestants are divided into three categories. Yellow, Blue and Green. Yellow competitors are for light weight and non-lethal fighting. Like boxing or mixed martial arts, the winner is determined by a knockout or through a points system. Blue contestants fight using weapons but are still generally non-lethal. They use stunner weapons or melee weapons that allow them to wound their opponents or stun them. The winner is the last one standing. Green contestants are full on, hardcore deathmatch players. They fight to kill, and use any weapons or means to finish off their opponents. Rocket launchers, rail guns, miniguns, grenades, high explosive, it's all accepted and encouraged for use in the Green Fights. Only a Green Contestant can compete to be made Grand Champion. Fighting is done in several different types. There are just man to man fights where two combatants are put into a smaller arena and sent after each other. There are larger free for all battles where a larger arena is filled with combatants who then set out to kill one another and be the last one standing at the end. There are team games like capture the flag as well and are played by contestant teams who are usually sponsored by a company. The tournament uses a system of devices called respawners to help make the fights more interesting. In timed fights, dead contestants are beamed away from the battlefield using transporter technology and reassembled using their last known pattern. All the arenas are lined with scanners so that their pattern can be monitored and kept up to date to the point right before death. Contestants are beamed back into the fight where they can continue fighting until time is called. Grand champion battles and the finals however do not use this system ever however and they are all fight to the death matches. All the fights are televised on the Liandri channel and are broadcast over 80% of crossroads and it's moons. they can be viewed on just about any kind of viewer, from black and white TVs from the 1960s to advanced holographic displays. |
