SungGyu My name is Kim SungGyu. I’m the leader of Infinite. I was born on April 28, 1989. I’m the only member born in the 80s, so I feel the generation gap from my dongsengs sometimes. A while ago, I was really fascinated when our magnae SungJong said that he didn’t know H.O.T sunbaenims. In our time, there was no way not to know them! I’m the leader hyung in the team, but at home I’m the magnae. I have a nuna who is five years older than me, and because to her friends I’m a young dongseng, they like to say that we’re really cute when they see us on TV. I’m JeonBook nobility and used to be in a school band. The band name was ‘Beat’…at first, we used to play hardcore band music similar to Pia, Linkin Park, and Limp Bizkit. We also liked Ellegarden and Muse. I was the vocalist and rapper. When I was twenty, I had the thought that “I will do rock music”, so I came up to Seoul and was active in HongDae district, but the friends who came with me went back and I was the only one left. I began liking different genres such as African-American music, pop, and dance, and I went into my current company and learned how to dance and felt joy from it. To be honest, the biggest reason I joined the company was because of Nell sunbaenims. They were my idols ever since I began music, so I even have the albums they released underground before their official ones. I was really taken aback on the first day filming Mnet’s <You’re My Oppa>. I thought that we were going to do something cool because they said we had our own program, but as seen on broadcast, Jiae suddenly came into our dorm while we were eating and I hurriedly called our manager hyung. That was all real. It started like that, and I think I showed everything from my face without make-up to taking off my clothes at the bathhouse (SungYeol: Your chest was shown too!), to crying. Because my body was already revealed before debuting, I didn’t have the obsessive thought that I needed to make my body better. We all have accepted that ‘we have average bodies’. Occasionally, I think, ‘Should I exercise?’. Ha ha ha. We still keep in touch with Jiae, who appeared as our younger sister. She came to support us at our first performance and at our showcase, and called us after seeing our performance to advise, “Work hard. It’ll be hard”. She’s like a nuna. Ha ha. While filming for the ‘Come Back Again’ music video, there were many things to ride, but I rode the limousine. Everyone seems to think that I took the good thing because I’m the eldest, but it’s not like that. The director said that the atmosphere suited me… (SungYeol: You don’t suit it that well. Ha ha ha~) Eum, I think that he picked the one that he hopes I will suit well in the future. When I sing, my eyebrows become sad-shaped like the Chinese character for eight (八). After seeing the performance, even my mom said, “Shouldn’t you fix that”, so I’ve been paying it a lot of attention and practicing, but it’s hard to fix because my eyebrows were born like this. (DongWoo: But SungGyu hyung seems to have a more emotional voice when he has a sad expression.) Now, more people like my eyebrows, and I think that soon WooHyun will begin imitating my expression. He might be practicing it in a place I can’t see him. DongWoo My name is Jang DongWoo. I was born on November 22, 1990. I have two sisters, one who is six years older and one who is three years older. Everyone says that I must have grown up being loved, but in reality I grew up being hit! (SungGyu: He talks like that, but when I occasionally see him talking to his nunas on the phone, they seem to really love him and take care of him.) My parents told me that they would allow me to sing and dance after I graduated high school, but because of my want to stand on stage faster, I began learning from my first year of high school. My nuna did dance, so I learned that and also danced a lot of R&B, but I think that my audition…I narrowly passed it. Ha ha. When I first met WooHyun and SungJong, I had a very manly image more than I do now. I grew my hair. (WooHyun: He viewed us competitively because we had come in as trainees before him. Ha ha!) But after we ate together for 30 minutes, we got close. The power of food is indeed impressive. I gained the nickname ‘Kenya DongWoo’ from Mnet’s <You’re My Oppa>. During my school years, my nickname was ‘WooDong’. And there are some people who ask me if I’m really from Kenya, and…ha. Those are all misunderstandings. I am a native Korean from the Kyeong-gi-do area. I once ripped my pants on <Infinity Girls> while dancing. I didn’t know at first, but I felt a cool sensation and glanced down to see something white! I hurriedly danced while gripping onto my clothes and afterwards said, “This is a new dance I created”, but that part was edited out and the only thing that aired on broadcast was my dancing. On <Gag Concert>, Wang Biho teacher once said, “What is Infinite? It’s not an implant!”. And he said, “No one can even laugh because no one knows who you guys are!”, so I thought then, “Ah, we really need to work hard”. After the filming, he gently told us to “Work hard and I hope that you guys do well in the future”, so I was thankful. The scene where I’m standing in the rain in the ‘Come Back Again’ music video took two hours to film. I was doing live and every time I sang, rain would get into my mouth and my eyes wouldn’t open, so I got scolded. (WooHyun: Ha…Come…Ba…ck…Aga…in… like that.) In the dorm, WooHyun, L, and SungYeol share a room. SungGyu hyung, SungJong, and Hoya share another room, and I share a room with our manager hyung. Because I like manager hyung. He he. I once learned how to play an instrument called a patica. You connect two cacao fruits and make sounds with the sand inside the instrument, and it makes noises like tak, tak, chi, chi. (WooHyun: It’s really annoying when you hear it inside the dorm! It keeps going tak, tak, chi, chi-) Ha ha, to use the actual instrument seemed like a waste, so I practiced with a plastic imitation… Before debut, I decided to keep a daily diary. To be honest, diaries aren’t something you show someone, but one day SungGyu hyung said convincingly, “Since I’m the hyung and the leader, I need to know everything you guys are thinking. That way I can lead this team well”, and I got confused and thought, ‘Could that be true?’, so I really showed him. (SungGyu: I thought that his diary would have a lot of philosophical words because he practices rapping and lyrical writing a lot, but all it says is things like, ‘Today I ate lunch at this time’, ‘Today’s schedule is this’.) After that, I never showed my diary to anyone else and carry it around in my bag in fear that the members will see it. If I knew this would happen, I should have bought a diary with a lock on it! (L: Hw about a 007 bag?) WooHyun My name is Nam WooHyun. I was born on February 8, 1991. I have a hyung who is two years older than me. My original dream was to become a soccer player. But my body didn’t follow me and I eventually quit. If I had kept on with soccer, wouldn’t I have been able to play in the South African World Cup? I saw that Lee DongKook player, whom I’ve admired since I was young, played in the South African World Cup. I felt like he was playing instead of me, so I was really happy. (Everyone: Euhahaha! Instead of you, what? That’s not it!) To be honest, my looks weren’t idol-like. Although I had friends who told me that I was, ha ha ha. Anyway, I had the thought that if my face couldn’t make it, then I should work harder at singing, so I came to audition at this company. I liked that there were these musician sunbaenims such as Epik High and Nell here. I passed the audition confidently with Stevie Wonder’s ‘Lately’. I think the president passed me after seeing my strong confidence and…confidence. Ha ha ha. My role model is definitely Stevie Wonder. The reason I started music was to learn about his music, and it touches me that despite his old age, he still passionately enjoys music itself. I’m really sad that I won’t be able to go to his performance in Korea this time. In our dorm, there are two 2-story beds. But SungYeol, L, and me all sleep on the floor, despite the fact that we’re the members who do not look like they belong with the ground. (SungJong: Hyung, you suit it. SungGyu: Yah, are you saying that we look like we belong to the ground then?) Ha ha, this is my personal standard. My liver is in bad shape, so when I eat oily foods, my stomach suffers, but because I love meat so much, if it’s in front of my eyes I stuff it down. And it all goes down south…I’m sorry. I seem to be the best cook in Infinite, but because we eat everyday at the restaurant next to our dorm, I never have a chance to cook for them. In Mnet <You’re My Oppa>, I made Jiae an egg dish once, but she said it wasn’t tasty. But she only said that for the fun of the show—in reality, it was tasty! (SungGyu: He made a lot and we ate some too, and it really was tasty.) My first impression of L was that he had a luxurious appearance and a unique atmosphere, but occasionally, he has the pronunciation with satoori, so he feels more familiar and human-like. It makes me think that even handsome L has flaws… DongWoo hyung is known amongst our group as the ‘Gum Angel’. We don’t want to see his gums, but when he smiles, it’s really pretty. Ha ha. Recently, SungJong seems to be going through puberty, because we can’t mess with him easily. Occasionally, we’ll ask him to do something and he’ll slam the door and go inside, so I just think, “Whew, I’ll just do it myself’. (SungJong: Woah, that’s not true! I don’t slam the door. It does that because of the wind-) When I ask him to put towels in the washing machine, he throws it with a tak! (SungJong: No, that’s not it. Towels need to be shaken before being put in. Why are you making me into a weird kid!) I’ve been brushing up on various imitations. I’m confident at Ha DongKyun sunbaenim and MC Mong sunbaenim’s imitations, but I get asked, “Why do you keep doing the same ones over and over again?”, so I tried something else and it didn’t go over well. Oh, I’ll show you a small bit of Kwon SangWoo sunbaenim. “Yah, you gaenari-!” and Oh KwangRok sunbaenim’s “Ah…I’m annoyed…”, and there’s Kim YoungChul sunbaenim’s “I’m a stone ↘ I write laws-” and lastly, Kim JaeDong sunbaenim, one two three- Ahem! …Ah, you couldn’t hear it? A while ago, we filmed the music video for ‘She’s Back’ at the beach and wore clothes with a marine look. The member who suited it the most was, of course, me…I thought so, but because I dyed my hair black, fans told me that I look like a president who went golfing. Heuk- I was fresh before! I’m a ‘bolmae’ (the more you look at him, the more charming he is). You might not know at first, but you have to keep looking constantly. There’s a definite charm here of slight dirtiness and looking old-aged! HoYa My name is Hoya. My real name is Lee HoWon. Hoya is my nickname ever since I was young, and I’m glad that I debuted with this name. When people I meet for the first time call me ‘Hoya’, I feel like we get closer faster. (WooHyun: When we first met, I called him HoWon and it looked like he didn’t really like it, and so I called him Hoya and he suddenly beamed! SungGyu: Seriously it’s to the point that there’s even a rumor among the trainees that when you call HoWon Hoya, his mood gets better.) I was born on March 28, 1991. My hometown is Busan. I have a hyung who is two years older than me and a younger brother who is five years younger than me. That’s why when I first met our younger sister Jiae in Mnet’s <You’re My Oppa>, it was really awkward. I didn’t know whether she was a younger sister or a girlfriend or a new organism… To be different from the other members, I chose the concept of ‘Bad Guy’ and didn’t take that much care of Jiae on purpose. Because it was a program about taking care of our younger sister, it all got edited out. Ha ha ha. I was a Taekwondo player until middle school. I went until I got to the third level and went as the representative for a competition, but the level there was different. I got hit a lot there, so my desire to keep going disappeared completely. Wow, I really got hit a lot. I dropped out in my first year of high school to go learn singing and dancing, but I was dropped from several auditions and was about to give up when my music teacher told me about the audition at our current company. For practicing the choreography for ‘Come Back Again’, we taped ourselves dancing and watched it. Every one second, we would click the pause button and if someone had a movement wrong, we would do it again. Up until the day before debut, we never once heard a compliment from our choreography teacher. But after watching our debut stage, he told us that he “got goosebumps”. It was the first compliment we had gotten, so I was really happy. The name of the dance team I used to be in was ‘BK’. The letters stood for ‘Black Korean’. Because African-Americans have good physical bodies, good elasticity/flexibility during dancing, and good vibrations while singing, I was jealous and purposely went to go eat hamburgers with my hyungs who danced and learned slang that African-Americans use. It was to the point that once during puberty, I asked my mom, “Why aren’t I African-American?”. My mom’s answer? “Because I’m not African-American.” Recently while filming the music video for ‘She’s Back’, I got a natural tan. Everyone didn’t like that they got burned, but I was the only happy one. I can almost say that my role models are African-Americans. That’s why my favorite artists are Usher, Chris Brown, and Omarion. I really wanted to go to the recent Usher concert in Korea, and I was really sad that I couldn’t go. MyungSoo, no, L, has a strong and cold appearance, but when you get to know him, he’s as sensitive and warm a caring friend as any. And SungYeol has a smart image like a model student, but when you spend time with him, he’s not the same! He has a lot of weak points and his voice cracks a lot when he talks and he cries easily! Ha ha ha. DongWoo hyung and I once learned rap from Mithra sunbaenim and DoKki sunbaenim. Mithra sunbaenim took us to his parent’s house and fed us home-cooked food, and it was really delicious! We ate meat, eum. He eats meat with all three meals… When we go to eat meat with all the members, we eat at least 20 portions. The manager hyungs always never get to eat because they’re busy grilling the meat for us. They’re like angels. (L: It looks like we’re going to eat meat again today.) SungYeol My name is Lee SungYeol. I was born on August 27, 1991. Amongst our members, my height…my height is the tallest. When I measured it in the past, it was 180 cm, but I think I’ve grown a bit since then. To be honest, instead of ‘Infinite’, we almost debuted as Super Sonic, The Big Dipper, iPop, Blackberry, or Icons. The names that our president had been thinking of until the end was honestly not appealing to us, so we were suffering for a while, so when it was decided as Infinite, we went wow! and were happy. Originally, I wanted to be an actor and was preparing for it, but by chance, I got an opportunity to sing on stage. I tried it, and it was more charming than I had thought, so I ended up singing alongside acting. One day, I want to attempt to act as a comical but strong character like Yoo HaeJin sunbaenim or Lim ChangJung sunbaenim. A while ago, I went to the filming of MBC’s <Quiz to Change the World> (WooHyun: Oh, wasn’t it that SungJong went alone?), but I think that only SungJong will appear in the broadcast. After coming back from filming, I keep losing my words. A scene that I hope doesn’t get edited out? Heuk, there is no such thing. But…I heard that a lot of funny things got caught. While filming for the ‘Come Back Again’ music video, all I did was run all day long. SungGyu hyung rode a limousine, and L rode an expensive segway, but I had to teleport. Ha ha ha. I said on Mnet’s <You’re My Oppa> that I’ve dated a girlfriend before, but that’s just, eum…hasn’t everyone dated? Generally seen, I think that WooHyun or L would be popular with girls. I’ve cried at a wedding of a distant cousin I had never seen before. Just looking at the white background of the wedding ceremony was beautiful enough to make tears fall, but my mom said, “Why are you like that”. I could have been mistaken for being at the wedding of a person I liked. My sensitivity is a bit sensitive. (Hoya: Saying such things with your own mouth…) But if you asked me to blatantly cry, tears don’t come easily. If they asked me to do a crying scene in a music video, I don’t think I could cry. (L: You could just go to a wedding!) At the dorm, the laundry is done by divided teams. SungGyu hyung, L, SungJong, and Hoya are one team, and me, WooHyun, and DongWoo hyung are the other team. We rotate once every week to do the laundry. The biggest difficulty is that during the summer, the laundry doesn’t dry very well. To be honest, we’re not the cleanest kids, but we do need to live the cleanest we can. Ha ha ha ha. (SungGyu: There is…no clean member. WooHyun: Our manager hyung is probably the cleanest.) If we could rebuild our dorm like in ‘Love House’, I wish that we could have two, no, four bathrooms. Then what happens to the rooms? Well…we can just make the living room smaller. L My name is L. My real name is Kim MyungSoo. I was born on March 13, 1992. My home is Seoul and I have a brother who is two years younger than me. I was the one who created the name L. There are people who ask me if I don’t use my real name because of Park MyungSoo sunbaenim, but that’s not it. It just happened this way. Ah, and it’s not L from <Death Note>, either. (WooHyun: But even from the trainee days, his aura was similar to L’s. His hair was long then too.) I was interested in acting and modeling, but I went to go see a lot of musicals and ended up auditioning as a singer. I often hear that I resemble KimBum sunbaenim. (SungGyu: He happens to go to the same hair salon as us and I met him once. Eum…KimBum sunbaenim is really cool.) Eum…people say that. Even when I look at him, his face is small and he’s tall. (SungGyu: Yeah, what’s not is what’s not. You must grow strong!) During Mnet’s <You’re My Oppa>, I got angry after seeing Jiae go to the pool hall with her friends during test season. When I dragged her out by the wrist without any words, I was really expressing my feelings honestly. When there is a fight about a discussion within our team, it’s about choosing what to eat. It’s hard to agree on a menu because there’s so many of us, so our manager hyung narrows it down to about four and we choose from there. To be honest, there isn’t a person who puts in a strong suggestion, so when we feel that it’s not right, we have the types of personalities to just let other people’s suggestions through. The same foods that we all like are samgyupsal, chicken, and pizza. (SungYeol: Occasionally, the president comes by without warning and buys us meat after saying, “You guys’ bodies don’t look good”. When that happens, he looks really cool. SungGyu: We have morning schedules so when we eat at night our faces get bloated, but those times when he tells us that we must eat what we want to eat!) It’s been over a year since I’ve lived with the members in the dorm. (WooHyun: I’m so sick of it!) There are times when I want to escape. Times I have actually escaped? None. (SungGyu: Our manager hyung is right next to us, so we can’t say anything right now.) I bought a really loud alarm clock, but since some time ago, I can’t even hear it anymore because I’m so tired. So we chose a wake-up person for every morning, and if that person cannot wake up or wake the others up, then they have to pay a fine. Because we put up something of substance like that, people who couldn’t wake up before now wake up immediately and scolds everyone to hurry and wake up. Ha ha. My role model is DBSK. I liked them since ‘Hug’, and although there are people who think it’s fascinating that a male student likes DBSK, I like their unique musical color. I think their songs are cool, from the bright-styled ‘Hug’ to ‘Rising Sun’ or ‘Purple Line’, which is more powerful. SungJong My name is Lee SungJong. I was born on September 3, 1993. I am currently a second-year at JeonJu Arts High School majoring in Broadcasting Culture. I have a brother who is three years younger than me. My hometown is Jeonrado KwangJu. Normally when I speak, I don’t use satoori, but frequently when I talk to my mom, dad, and friends on the phone, it comes out when I get excited. Ahtta, wamma, weomye~ like this. Living with six hyungs is re-ally stifling. (Everyone: Euhahahahaha!) Ah, I’m kidding. I’m really happy. Really! The hyungs treat me well. (L: Don’t try and make it better. WooHyun: Why are you looking at me?) Since I’m the magnae…ahem, my voice just cracked. Anyway, because I’m the magnae, the hyungs teach me about a lot of things and comfort me well. That’s why I’m happy that I’m the magnae. (WooHyun: What is that, this comment that sounds like it’s from a commercial! SungGyu: SungJong is really magnae-like and cute. He has a lot of aegyo (acts cute). But he’s been hanging out with WooHyun a lot lately and it feels like he’s getting more and more dirty…) SungGyu hyung, who’s the leader, really takes good care of his dongsengs. He lets us know about the schedule, how to greet people, and what to do when we’re about to leave. I also think it was SungGyu hyung who treated Jiae the best in Mnet’s <You’re My Oppa>. (WooHyun: You mean commanding her and asking her if she knows how to cook? Ha ha ha.) To describe L hyung in one word, he’s like a pineapple. Pineapples are hard and rough on the outside but really sweet on the inside. I think hyung is exactly like that. (WooHyun: You prepared that comment, didn’t you?) Yes. A while ago, I said on the radio that I wanted to eat sushi, and for the very next schedule, fans sent sushi and I ate it deliciously. Thank you! (WooHyun: SungJong knows how to use broadcasting.) I saw a desert fox for the first time while filming the music video for ‘Come Back Again’. I thought it would be really big, but in real life, it was very small and cute, so I wanted to keep it as a pet. But it was an animal very sensitive to sound, so we had to be really careful while filming. Last year, when the King of Pop Michael Jackson passed away, I was really sad. He was my most favorite artist, and I wanted to resemble him in his cool and unique voice, singing, dancing, and stage manners. My two favorite songs of his are ‘Beat It’ and ‘Ben’. Recently, I had a sexy dance battle with Jokwon sunbaenim on MBC’s <Quiz to Change the World>. The set-up was that I would stand in front of sunbaenim and do a provocative dance. Afterwards, we danced together, but honestly I did have the mindset that I wanted to win. However, I think that sunbaenim does really well. (WooHyun: When SungJong dances like a man, his waves are a bit off, but when he dances like a girl, there’s a side of him that changes. I saw him practicing really hard, so I tried to slightly imitate him and Hoya saw me and said, “Low-grade!”, so I got that it wasn’t my road and stopped immediately. Heuk Heuk-) The secret to doing sexy dances well is to be sensual. With the mindset that you’re seducing someone? (SungGyu: Don’t say something like that with your own mouth!)
