Not much changed for this part of modding, but I'll put tutorial anyway. Those who are aware and knowing in effect recoloring will probably realize, not much has actually changed.

After unpacking the ARC files, all effects (.efl files) used by playable characters or NPCs (depending on unpacked archive) are put under "effect\efl\" folder.
Effect editing requires hex editor (as usual). The screens were made while using Hex Editor Neo.

Here's a nice website with plenty of color codes http://www.color-hex.com/

Okay, so let's start:
1. Open the .efl file you want to modify with hex editor. (Don't have it? Download it :P ).
2. Use search option and look for "BM" phrase. The color codes needed for recoloring are always near the "BM" phrase.
3. This is more or less a view you're going to get:

1.1

1.2

2.1

2.2

After changing the mentioned parts, search for another "BM" in the file and repeat the steps until you run out of BMs. It's time-consuming, but it should be easy to get used to to novices.
If anyone discovers something else in here, give an info and I'll update it. :)

What's the purple freak's most common problem?
So many clothing shops and not even one has purple in them xP

Trust me - It's not funny, it's downright annoying -_-'''

When and wherever the world forgets about purple, I don't :P

big thanks for this, used it to edit trish's stuff... now i gotta work on identifying what is what, haha

ok, shooting question here but i can't seem to find color modifiers for certain aspects of trish's overdrive- i've edited both the primary and secondary color schemes on the related files but they only recolor some parts of the stuff and not everything. what am i missing here? for reference these things have pitch black and bright red aspects to them that don't appear to even show up in the hex

Bare Knuckle Combo A
Drive/Overdrive
ec132_04v0 - 2nd charge effect (??? maybe first charge too? can't seem to change it w this)
ec132_04v2 - first drive
ec132_04v3 - main splash

ec132_05v0 - the effect rising from the ground when throwing the rest of the slashes
ec132_05v1 - the rest of the drives (except the third, possibly?)
ec132_05v3 - more of the effect rising from the ground, occurs on 3rd overdrive and the rest of the overdrives after the 4th

Right now I think of only two explanations...
One is that sometimes in effect file there may be parts that can't have their color codes fun. Right now i'm editing Vergil's effect files and in some situations I get slight red parts out of nowhere...
Second (more possible) is that in original DMC4 effects there was an additional sequence that (if added) blocked out color code from changing. Right now, I'm a bit busy so it will take time before I'll check if something like that is present in SE...

i think there's more color codes that aren't following the general pattern because i just edited the color of a thing by scattershot guessing "replace all"-ing color codes off the primary and secondary colors and it was hitting random spots

EDITING TO CORRECT:
the color behind some stuff is here: above the effect\mod stuff, highlighted in red. this is NOT the lighting, but still important in recoloring stuff

the lighting is in fact, actually super annoying to find but consistent- what you're looking for is in 16 whatever view
in that view, the line you will be looking for always has a "10" as the first value of the line and then ends with a color code
if you need to double check, it'll always be above a BM or a effect\mod line by quite a bit, never directly above
if it doesn't end with a color code, ignore it. it's most likely directly above a BM line when that's the case
obviously the stuff at the start with the formatting and stuff doesn't count for this so totally ignore the first like third of the file

i search with: "10 00 00 00 00 00 00 00" in HxD to find 'em bc it narrows down the potential stuff

make sure to look at the areas above the _BM hexes too.

for sparks it's directly above the first _BM result you'll get but below the header if they're there- it'll still follow the color code pattern of repeats so yeah.
see:

for other stuff (judgement cut slashes, the sword glass shards exploding, blah blah) it's possible for them to be in basically nonsense wacky positions (but always above the bm!) as such:

that general mid-area between the bm and ean is your best bet as long as it matches and makes sense as a color code (don't go replacing 00 00 80 FF if it shows up literally all over the file and whatnot) but it's pretty annoying to deal with in general

it seems like nobody's ultimately taking advantage of these but putting these here for reference anyways:

the value shown here gives the effect a property- 3F is regular, 40 is heavy glow, 41 is distortion and 42 is heavy distortion

changing the timing of effects can be done, the end of the .efl file has a pattern where it segments each effect into a 'lil zone following a pattern starting from 01 (as shown in the image). above that identifier you just edit the value shown to change the timing for each segment of the effect. i don't know what the value exactly is, but i can say that you wanna generally keep it under 20? i just used 03 as a base replacement here

also noting that you can change the shape/texture of an effect to some degree- if they use the same texture, then they have the same formatting so you can copy/paste the relevant section over and replace it wholesale.
that's how i got the orb for the judgement cut
