Meh, they had already screwed DMC 4, so it wasn't unexpected.

Omni's right. I guess I was in denial, but my husband said to me "They were obviously trying to get rid of Dante completely in 4, he wasn't supposed to be in it. They were limited by the series and the fans to be able to do this. Now they decided a clean slate is in order."

Anyway here's more info. 1up interview

If you don't wanna read the whole thing, here's the part Tameem said:
Antoniades

"The essence of Devil May Cry is all about 'cool,'" he says. "It's about Dante being cool and making you feel cool when you're playing it, and so the combat and the style system and everything is integral to that. But, you know, what was cool 12 years ago -- I think that was when the first game came out [Editor's Note: he's a bit off, as the first title came out in 2001] -- isn't cool anymore. If Dante, dressed as he was, walked into any bar outside of Tokyo, he'd get laughed out. What Devil May Cry did when it launched was it brought everything that was great about action cinema like the fashion, music -- it was like a cultural melting pot -- and I feel like now, for Devil May Cry to have that same impact, it needs to draw on new things. New music, new ways of cinematography, new fashion."

So smoking, meth addiction, and zombified looks are 'cool' now? I guess I really am too old, though ironically it just makes me think of the tobacco ads of the 90s now. I think Tameem needs to see this. Seriously. My family is full of smokers. And the first thing I think of when I see new Dante is that awful clinging stench of cigarette smoke that gets into -everything-. When I visit my folks, whatever clothes I took with me smell that way for a good month regardless of how often I wash em.

So them making the smoking such a focal point now is just stupid. I'm sure there's plenty of folks who see no problem with it, but there's plenty who do. Where before I never saw anyone say "geez, Dante really needs to pickup this habit if he wants to stay cool."

Anyway. I'm not cutting wrists or going to kill myself over this so don't get the wrong idea Omners. But I am upset. And very disappointed. Like I said, I was absolutely crazy about Devil May Cry. But they've taken away what made me love it so much. It was different and unique and now I can think of nothing to say about the new game but 'typical.' Dante was 'cool' before because his world was gritty and dark, but he wasn't. Now he's just become a victim of his environment. Dios mio. How refreshing and innovative. 9.9

Still, I'm sharing this stuff. Maybe it will make some of you change your minds even and give this game a shot. I think its what they are hoping for. It won't work for me, DMC had me at Dante. It's now lost me with Dante.

So I guess I'm like Fallout's Three Dog now. This is 3-Kittn, Bringing you the news. No matter how bad it hurts. :|

They might do a DmC2 where he looks just like the Dante we know but it ends with him being a really old man that looks nothing like him.
i have to say i liked 1 the best..

Meant to reply to this a while back. I saw Tsuyo's blog. I agree.

The retardedness about the underaged smoking to look cool thing is how uncool it really makes you look. Desperate even. And Dante was never desperate to impress anyone. It just came naturally to him. The huge focus on the smoking thing in the new DmC is probably the biggest turn-off for me visually about it at this point. Which is why even as a game without DmC on it, I wouldn't want it. :/ It having that name just irks the shizzle out of me.

To be honest, 4 is probably my favorite Dante, with as little as we saw of him. I think it was a believable mashup of 1 and 3, though I know folks will disagree. I just wish he had more playtime and had his own stages. Clean-up-after-the-rookie could of been left to Lady or something as a DLC.

X3 These reaction videos are great. Here's my favorite so far:

Will Smith's Reaction to the DmC Reboot

Found a new interview (sounds like the guy writing the article worships NT or something). I read through the crap so you don't have to, but the link is at the bottom as always if you feel like it. Basically the meat of the article is about whether game developers should listen to their fans. The article writer thinks they shouldn't. Here's the interesting quote:

Bitbomb interviewer

At the very least I should have become the adoring fan, praised him for Heavenly Sword, and told him how I couldn't wait to get a copy of Enslaved.

I instead assumed the snarky journalist persona, and without thinking asked, “So, how do you feel about the fan reaction to DMC?”

Tameem looked at me a moment and took a drag of his cigarette. Then without blinking, and without pausing to exhale the smoke from his mouth he said, “I don't care.”

And neither should any other developer.

So. Need any other proof that this guy put himself in the game? I was actually giving him the benefit of the doubt till I learned Tameem smokes too. Haha. What an arrogant guy. This game is a solid 'used buy' if anything from me. More than likely I won't touch it at all. Kinda stupid to be so nonchalant about what us fans think, when its our cash that's going to make or break this game. And it doesn't count if we buy it used. Any of you planning to pre-order or buy fresh off the shelf? I haven't met anyone yet who is. The most they are getting is "I'll wait and see." Which means used or reduced price to me.

But I guess they don't care about that either? :P Even though the whole reason for this crap is because Capcom wasn't happy with the 2.5 mil that DMC4 made them. (A pretty solid profit for any game, btw.)

Anyway. That's the latest. NT and Capcom are still talking out of both sides of their mouth in most interviews, trying to win back core fans without losing any ground on their pet reboot project. I wonder if the Capcom reps have seen this little nugget. Anyways. Full article is here: Bitbomb link. Warning: It is extremely pro-NT and heavily biased. It made me want to throw something.

Remember, NT showed Capcom a number of designs, and they agreed to this one (After rejecting several more conservative ones).
