The crash is probably caused by something else and not the editing itself. However, you can try GIMP if you want, it's a free alternative to Photoshop.
You're reaping what you've sown!

hmm.. the only reason for this kind of problem that i can say is when you do the converting your edited images back to .tm2 file.. or the file size of your .pac increased? if so then you have to increase the max file size (if your'e modding the default dante(mission1-mission7) pl000.pac.. or pl013.pac(mission8-mission20) for the ripped sleeve dante) of your gdata.afs or it might crash your game :P

okay i'm sorry for bringing this topic back up in these years.. and style switcher(i think the latest is 1.3.1.3 where the weapon switcher finally working properly with it's sound and fixed some random crashing on certain missions while weapon switcher option is turned on) is making this game more enjoyable to play with now so i just had to bring this back cuz i run out of ideas anymore..

my game crashed after i edited the cutscene textures.. not the pre-rendered movie clip(eg: i extracted m01_c00.pac, then inside the folder i copied over m01_c00_004.pac which contain the textures from cutscene to the pac tools and extracted them.. so i do each step just as this tutorial told me to.. after finishing editing and repacking the m01_c00_004.pac i just replace over the original pac inside m01_c00 folder before repacking it back to pac file.. after i done with everything i tried to view the cutscene on demo digest (mission 01-the crazy party) in the game then it crashed..

p.s : i got no problems with in-game texture.. it's just the cutscene texture :headbang:

i think it might have to do with pac injector tool.. like we have to inject the edited pac file back to its folder(which contain's .pac inside) eg;m01_c00 folder before repacking it.. the game crashed if i do the simple copy paste method.. i still haven't found a solution to this problem..

i wish i know how to use the injector tool :headbang:

Well, for anyone who didn't see the "About repacking when multiple pac files are included in one pac file" thread, all we needed to do was the most obvious thing, that we should've tried in the first place—pasting the pre-modified headers into re-packed archives. Facepalming myself for not even trying to do it before :headbang: .

Now that you mention it, I guess I didn't read that part or I somewhat did not noticing it

I get weird results with custom textures, mainly Vergil.
For starters, the original zeros from, say, coatless body/face texture pasted into the modified just crash the game, but the amount of zeros from DMC1 coatless Dante (i'm sure it's the same for Dante across all of his costumes) gets me into the game, but if i use summoned swords or FE or d.t. the game crashes. It's also dependant on the textures size, with 1024x1024 i get what i just wrote, with 512x512 FE and d.t. FE and Beo no longer crash the game, but d.t. Yamato still does. That's with coatless, the default Vergil's costume works fine without any crashes.

I believe we briefly discussed this some time ago in one of my threads. I've never been able to run the game with anything at 1024 pixels and 512 is the maximum for me (including the modding I did circa 2007-8).

In my most recent mods, I wasn't able to get HQ Vergil up and running fully until I reduced the Yamato texturemap to its default cutscene resolution (to 256x256 from 512x512) and I also left the hair texturemap as default, since having it at a higher resolution doesn't really change the look of the model enough anyway.

When I upscaled the hair texture, the game simply crashed. When I upscaled Yamato's texture, the game loaded up but crashed upon using any melee weapon at all.

However, I was only able to get HQ Coatless Dante up and running fully when I used HQ Vergil's textures' HEX values (the zeroes), as otherwise the game crashed. I give you permission to use my HQ Vergil texture files for your mod, they should work for you. I'm working on coatless Vergil at the moment as well but I haven't tried to load up the mod yet, been busy.

It seems to be a complete mystery when it's possible to use an upscaled texture. However, I still defend that 512x512 is more than enough resolution for textures in this game. Why even bother trying to make 1024x1024 work? The models are too low poly to benefit from that. If you were modifying the rooms and using 1024x1024 textures for the walls, floors, doors etc, then it'd make sense.
A combo a day keeps the B rank away!
