About Microsoft IIS
To put it into shortbread IIS is a method to easily(for the most part) host your own websites etc. With this setup you can host images, html files, forums etc(some things vary depending if you have PHP, MySql, and scripts setup) It its relatively easy to do and actually get it running on your network but as you will soon find out once its actually installed getting in online isn't super easy. So then if you want to host your own site, files, or whatever with your own rules using Microsoft's(It was HARD to type that I kept wanting to put Microshaft, Microshit) IIS then let us get started.

Why this is easier?
Well I will explain why this is much easier than other alternatives to host on your own connection. First off depending what OS(has to be a Microsoft XP Pro+) it may already be installed on your computer which only requires a brief search than install then simply locating your folder where your files are located then some other simple things(such as getting a dyns) It is MUCH easier more supported than setting up a VPN or any form of a tunnel which basically securely connects two or multiple connections(usually used if you don't want to use HTTPS for doing your trickery)

Requirements
There are not too many but depending what MS OS you are running it can depend. Also you may need to install third party clients and services such as a newer version of PHP a Type of *actual* server etc. You will need one of the following

-XP Professional
-Vista Ultimate
-Windows 7 home premium(recommended and tested by me, also pretty sure other versions of the w7 OS should work also its already in it)

If your version of windows does not already have IIS(you will soon find out) then you can fetch a version of it(along with Micro sever 2008 for like 180 days free) which can be found here:

Code:

http://www.iis.net/downloads

Also a Net setup with the following
-Good Bandwidth(DSL is unlimited, Comcast is NOT)
-Good DL/Up speed so your site is not slow to others(wont matter if on the same network)
-PC space, have space for whatever your putting up

How to install IIS(I will be doing Windows 7)
First off all if you have Windows 7(pretty sure all versions) then you simply need to do the following. ALSO works on Vista Home Prem.

1.First enter your control panel and go near the top right corner where it has "View By:" - set that to Large Icons(easier to navigate and more like CP Classic)

2. Scroll down to a little more than half way to you navigate to "Programs and Features" click on it

3. To your left you should see "Turn windows features on or off" you are going to have to click that and if you didn't already know... this REQUIRES admin privileges to enable.

5. Wait for the GUI to load and you should see a list of objects with little clickies next to them.

6. Scroll down till you locate "Internet Information Services"(IIS)

7. Wait for it to install, this should not take long(took me a few seconds on w7, on vista it took awhile longer)

8. Once it is finished it is time to locate our access folder...

9. Go to
Code:

C:\inetpub
This is the location of where you will place your files (C:\inetpub\wwwroot is your actual files for the most part)

10. Edit the HTML file with your favorite editor, add files etc you get the picture.

Testing your Web Page
Now you will need TWO PC's to actually test this, by default you can access this page if you have TWO PC's on the SAME home network(or any network) by doing these simple steps.

1. Get on a different PC to prove its up

2. Go to a browser(such as IE or Safari) and type in the following...

3. Http://Mike-PC (Or whatever that PC is named, such as Your-PC etc... if you don't know check your network)

4. BAM it should be there with whatever you put

Getting it Online
This I have to explain, just stick with editing for now as this is the hard part. Will have to use your IP.

Changing the access URL
This is simple and yet free

1. Once you have your info(must be IP) go to

2. http://www.dyndns.com/

3. Go to Free Dynamic DNS section

4. Enter what you want it to be @ some site

5. Hit Add and finish

Misc
Depending how its setup IIS should(or might not) have PHP, if you wish to use PHP scripts(a good idea) than you will have to download and install PHP along with any databases such as MySql. PHP Scripts have useful functions such as logging IP's, other info, displaying, errors, or most importantly network structures and downloading/HTTP connections(such as allowing be to transfer zips from your network using PHP functions)

Also it would be a good idea to learn some AJAX(USEFUL web scripting, if you don't know its what Google uses when it does recommended searches to keep it refreshing whenever you type)

Closing
Thank you for reading how to set up an IIS, which I believe is SOOOOO much better than a VPN etc. Thanks for reading and hopefully people will stop paying for hosting all the time for such simple things(if you have the bandwidth/connection)
