This is a role play between the three of us that we just started, and we thought it was so great that we'd throw it up here for show! Forgive any mistakes in the editing! --- Begin Role Play --- Arius: With the hiss of pneumatic pistons, the disembarkation ramp of the Thunderhawk descended to the soft soil of planet Tychron's primary jungle, which sprawled undisturbed for thousands of miles in all directions across one of the three continents of the world. Following the loss of all contact from Tychron, the Executioner's had been in a dilemma as to their next choice of action, until an unknown signal had been picked up by their Astropaths and traced to a location deep within this jungle. Arius: Their response had been swift. Five teams of Scouts would be deployed in different locations and simultaneously close upon the target to provide full coverage of the area and intelligence to help decide the Chapter's next move. Sister Apris: Brother Aetos finishes the last prayers and adjustments on his battle shotgun, and is ready to disembark with his fellow battle brothers. Arius: Scout Valinor, and designated leader of Reconnaissance Team 'Sword', stepped from the Thunderhawk's dimly lit belly, Chainsword and Bolt-pistol already drawn and ready. Arius: 'On your guard Brothers, we do not know what to expect here,' he says, glancing suspiciously into the deep shadows between thick-set trees. Gargmek: One worldweary sigh later, team sniper Brother Thanatos rises from his seat, shifting weight to keep the blood rushing through his feet and steps down the ramp. Sister Apris: Scout Aetos follows his squad leader close by, senses primed and shotgun cocked. 'Indeed, but we shall find the enemy, and track him down.' Arius: With his squad disembarked, Valinor taps his gorget's comm-link and gives the all clear to the Thunderhawk’s pilot. The ramp closes behind them, and the trees are blown savagely as the bulky craft rises into the night sky and guns towards orbit. In the absence of the growling engines, the scouts suddenly find themselves in an engulfing silence. Arius: 'If they don't find us first.' Gargmek: "Then we won’t allow that to happen. As simple as that." Sister Apris: Scout Aetos wonders about the silence, considering a jungle should be full of different animal noises and the like. Arius: 'We don't know what we are facing here. We must maintain our vigilance and not allow our confidence to get the better of us,' says Valinor, almost by rote, following the teachings of his Sergeant within the 10th Company. Having not been fully inducted into the Chapter as a Battle Brother, this assignment of leadership came as a surprise to Valinor and had put him ever so slightly on edge. Gargmek: Thanatos on the other hand has seen the fall of many different squads, slowly gaining a reputation for being one of the few remaining left before being shifted to another. This has left him a little cynical. Arius: 'Brother Aetos,' he says, knowing that Aetos wields the auspex, without taking his eyes off the shadows. 'What is the direction of the signal?' Sister Apris: Brother Aetos uses the auspex, and speaks up. 'It's to the east, several clicks further into the jungle.' Arius: 'We won't have fixes on the other four teams until we get closer, so watch your fire,' advises Valinor, and sets off in the direction given, leaving the clearing that the Thunderhawk had exploited and plunging into the darkness. 'Keep a flexible spread, but don't lose contact.' Sister Apris: Brother Aetos follows, several meters aside in spread formation, wading through the thicket of the jungle. Looking around with wary senses, ready for any contact. Gargmek: Thanatos follows a moment later, considering something. "This planet. Does it have a reputation for dangerous flora or fauna?" Arius: Valinor makes his way through the closely-set trees, crushing the imposing foliage beneath his powerful legs. 'Briefing gave surprisingly little information on the fauna of this world, classing it only as developing Imperial world, only recently elevated from feudal status. With all contact lost with the governing body, we're in the dark here.' Gargmek: He cannot help but hold the sarcasm from his voice. "In the dark. Best place for a sniper." Sister Apris: "Keep your eyes and ears open." Arius: 'We carry with us the light of the Emperor Thanatos. With it, we banish the shadows.' Sister Apris: "Not yet. We have yet to regain his blessing...earn it with our sweat and blood." Arius: Valinor grunts. 'We never lost it in the first place. We betrayed no one, not our brothers and certainly not the Emperor.' Gargmek: "This mission should have been delegated to the Catachan. At least they would have enjoyed it. Or blended in to a degree." Arius: 'Cold feet, Thanatos?' Sister Apris: Aetos stops, and looks around, trying to listen for any unusual noises other than the footsteps of his battle brothers. He stands there, staring into the distance like a bird of prey trying to search for a presence. Gargmek: "Blue armour against vibrant greens..." He cuts himself off there once Aetos stands motionless. Arius: Valinor continues for a few steps, until he notices that his brother has paused. 'Aetos? What is it?' Sister Apris: "Standard procedure of mine to ensure nothing is following in our noise." Sister Apris: He still looks around, and once he is certain there is no possible threat nearby, he motions to move on. Arius: 'Hm. Just don't fall behind,' he mutters, setting off once again into the seemingly never ending jungle. Gargmek: Thanatos mumbles to himself as he follows. "Even an Ork would have been a better suit for this." Arius: 'You are perhaps discontent with the orders of our Chapter Master, Thanatos?' he says, unable to keep the condescending tone out of his voice when addressing his cynical brother. Gargmek: "Discontent? I merely question my inability to arrange proper camouflage prior to departure." Sister Apris: Their other brother decides to not join this discussion and listens while moving on at a constant pace, striding over roots and vegetation, studying local wildlife in an attempt to possibly guess what dangerous predators could lurk on this world. Arius: 'Leave camouflage to the Imperial Guard who need it. The shadows are our cloak.' Gargmek: A mild, dark chuckle. "Now where have I heard that one before?" Arius: Valinor ignores his brother's slight, and presses on into the repeating jungle scene. Arius: 'We could be going in circles in this place for all we know,' he growls, frustrated, 'keep a close eye on that auspex Aetos.' Sister Apris: On that notice, he checks it once again, to make sure they closed in. This is up to you, though, since you lead. Gargmek: On the odd occasion, Thanatos peers through the trees, trying to find any sign of movement. Arius: A red dot appears on the auspex, headed towards them, soon it is joined by another, and then another. Valinor progresses, wary of an approaching enemy he does not yet know of. Sister Apris: Aetos raises his hand in a motion to inform them to slow down and be wary. With a lowered voice he speaks into the comm, if they use any. 'Attention, brothers. I have several contacts on the auspex.' he proceeds to give detailed directions for each of the dots. Arius: Valinor is at once ready, and surely enough soon the sounds of snapping branches and heavy, rushed footfalls meet his ears out of the eerie silence. He throws a gesture at Thanatos. 'Find a place to make good use of that sniper rifle! Aetos, get ready to cover me with that shotgun!' Gargmek: Thanatos mumbles to himself as he sets up a position out of sight, setting up a prime position. "This is the part where someone catches a bullet in the head." Gargmek: "Just pray that it's not one of us." Sister Apris: Aetos quickly paces towards his squad leader, shotgun at the ready, his eyes between the auspex and the direction the footsteps come from. Arius: The sounds of movement grow louder and closer, and are now accompanied by animalistic grunts, yet still no sign of any enemy. Valinor feels the deep anticipation well up within him, and with it comes a frustration for his hidden foe. On the auspex, the enemy registers a mere twenty metres from them. 'Where are they Aetos!' he cries, unable to restrain his battle lust any longer. Sister Apris: Aetos only points into their general direction. 'They are there, Brother. Let us unleash our fury upon them' Sister Apris: 'Just a mere twenty metres' Sister Apris: He readies his senses and has his shotgun fire ready in case they are flanked. Gargmek: Peering through the sights, he attempts to get a bead on one to check who they are. If hostile, prepares to fire. Arius: 'No, hold fire! We don't know what they-' but before he can finish the trees before them explode apart, and large beings burst into view, bulging muscles beneath dark green skin, saliva flicking from maw tusks and small black eyes wild in heavily sloped brows. Valinor doesn't hesitate, flicking his bolt-pistol up and squeezing off a round. It catches the closest Ork in the jaw and blows away a fleshy chunk of flesh and tooth, yet still the beast rushes on, a crude axe clutched in its hand. Sister Apris: 'Foul creatures, it's Orks!' Aetos shouts, and sets off a shotgun blast aimed at the closest ork. Gargmek: He fires, the trap set and blasts one of the Orks that hasn't taken a shot yet, aiming for its head. Arius: The beast that Valinor had wounded is caught full on in the chest by Aetos' blast, and pitched from its feet with a wild shout. Beside it a shower of filthy black blood fountains upwards as second Ork's head is blown apart by Thanatos' shot. The body runs on for a moment, before collapsing into a heap at Valinor's feet. Gargmek: Without hesitation, Thanatos lines up a second shot. Arius: 'For redemption!' roars Valinor, and steps into the Ork charge, his Chainsword roaring to life in a flurry of whirring blades. A savage slash takes off an Ork's arm, and Valinor finishes the flailing beast with a shot through the eye as another Ork is felled by Thanatos' steady aim. Gargmek: Whilst preparing the death of the next Ork, the thought occurs to him to wonder just how Orks managed to take the planet in the first place, or whether they'd been here since the Imperium conquered it. Sister Apris: With an audible click, he pulls his shotgun to reload, and fires another shot at the next ork, not speaking much, and briefly looking at the auspex, in case they are being ambushed from behind Arius: The Ork's charge on, and as Valinor cuts a second one down he notices that they seem unfocused. An Ork is decapitated close by as Aetos' shot blows out its neck. Almost in answer to Valinor's wondering, an Ork barrels into him when it could have struck him with its cruel looking blade. Valinor is thrown from his feet, but the Ork tumbles down atop him. As though only now aware of the Scout, the Ork roars at Valinor's face and lifts his blade to strike, but with his Chainsword and bolt pistol pinned beneath the Ork's bulk, the scout leader realises he has no way of defending himself. Sister Apris: Aetos quickly reloads the shotgun with the audible click, and fires a shot at the ork's arm, aiming to blow away his arm including his weapon, followed by another reload, with the next shot aimed at the ork's face. Gargmek: Quickly aiming away from the Ork on Valinor, seeing the situation as covered, he shoots down yet another Ork who has the decency to look surprised before it comes to grips with not having a face anymore. Arius: The blade never comes down, and instead its arm is blasted away as Aetos' shot rips through it. Valinor head-butts the distracted beast in the face and it stumbles back, only to have its face pulverised by a second blast from the shotgun. Valinor kicks the corpse aside and is on his feet in a second. He throws a nod of thanks to Aetos and makes to engage once more, when he realises the last few Orks are not running towards him, but have cut around and bolted away into the trees at his back. He stands, confused, as the surviving Orks disappear into the shadows. Arius: 'Any idea on what in Terra's name is going on here Aetos?' he says, wiping Ork gore off his face. Sister Apris: 'Most likely reforming or trying to get more of their kin. Orks do not retreat, they only reform to strike once more.' he replies Sister Apris: Despite being so sure, he looks backwards, in case anything escaped the auspex. Arius: Valinor grunts thoughtfully. 'Were they striking in the first place? They came from before us and retreated to behind us. I'm not even sure they knew of us before we started killing them.' Gargmek: Thanatos gets up from his place, coming over with longlas at ease. "In other words, we're still as unsure as before, maybe even moreso, and we're lower on rounds.’ Sister Apris: 'They might have set up explosives at whatever location we are heading to.' Sister Apris: 'and are retreating before the detonation goes off' Sister Apris: He clears his throat and adds 'but that is just an wild assumption' Arius: 'Hm. What do you think Thanatos? You have some experience, ever seen an Ork act like that before?' Gargmek: "In all my years, Orks have only 'retreated' with a purpose behind it. The fact that they came from where we intend to trek is puzzling though..." Arius: 'Almost as though they were running from something?' he says thoughtfully, almost to himself. 'Perhaps the Orks are not the true enemy here.' Sister Apris: 'But what would make an ork flee?' Sister Apris: Aetos adds, thoughtfully Arius: 'A prudent question Aetos, to which I have no answer.' Sister Apris: 'We will have to look into it and move on, I suppose.' Sister Apris: he puts in some new ammunition into his shotgun and loads it, then looks back at the auspex for any update on the radar scanner. Arius: 'Yes, answers will lie ahead.' he confirms and sets off once more, 'how far is the target signal?' Sister Apris: 'About a click ahead. If we move at a steady pace we will be there soon’ Gargmek: "Of course... Perhaps if we had longer rang communication we might contact our brothers and perhaps give them the heads up." Arius: 'Chapter Command deemed radio silence an important aspect to this mission until we locate the source of the signal. We don't want to alert any enemy to our presence if they don't already know of it.' Gargmek: "Very well..." He nods, conceding the point. Arius: 'A click ahead you say? Good, we should arrive soon. No more chatter, battle sign only, and adopt full stealth movement.' Arius: He sets off, his footsteps careful to avoid making too much noise as he delves once more into the shadows* Gargmek: Thanatos drops his stance, crouched to diminish his profile and follows suite* Sister Apris: So does Brother Aetos, assuming a low profile stance and avoiding too much noise. --- interlude --- Feedback welcome!
