Project II; Keep it simple

I'd like to start a new project, that aims to bring some life in this community again
by modding Imp1 with minor changes.

This 'Project II' is by far not as ambitious as the "current" 'Project I'.
Features will be different sprites for the units of different countries and tweaking
values and ressources for a greater depth in gameplay and a bit more historical
accuracy (as far as this is possible).

In the end, it should show up as a nice alternative to the original game.

Since I have to learn programming from scratch, I'd be very greatful for any help
from the community, be it advice or fellow programmers.

Cheers,
Sek

And here come the first questions:

I've been looking around, but couldn't find an answer on how to watch and change .scn, .map, .gob, .dat, .irg, .imp, .isu and .dll files.

If I'm not wrong here, I need to do this to finally figure out how this game works and to know what I will have to change.

Thanks in advance,
Sek

Changes like that are exactly what I want to do:

I just lack know-how. Historical research and thoughts on how to progress
are no problem then. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Is knowledge in C++ enough to go?

Cheers,
Sek

...The Legend...

hm, I don't know if I can give you much help, but I can provide you the email addresses of some of our programmers and see if they can help you. I know that somewhere around the site was a link to a download which contained all resources of the original game.

We need to pull information out of the Developer's Forums and publish it out here where people can get to it. Just as easy would be to promote him to the developer's team.
