Aye, aye! Steampunk with canon bgrounds sounds wondy to me. And Monty Python! Bahahaha! No, let's not go there. Oooh, it figures Heero would know all about how the technology works. That's how he makes it all go splodey! Nopies, I don't want to play him. I just want everyone to have the character they want. You guys know I'll bend any character to my twisted will until they're completely unidentifiable. Hee! So it really doesn't matter who I play. So are we going to Princess' board then, or setting up a new one? I'll wait until somebody else tells me where we're playing. Because I'm awesomely lazy that way. *waits and twiddles thumbs* Oooh, we need some kind of fantabulous steampunky theme, too! *waits for someone else to set that up as well*

I'm waiting to be told what to do with my board. Are they flung back into the past or what? And E, my idea of steampunk is essentially the same, but I don't think of their having the exact same laptop as we do—because their technology uses steam and gears and cogs and such, not electronics. When you said that they bring technology with them to the past, I thought you literally meant that you bring a laptop from, say, today's era back then. I've been misunderstanding things a lot lately. ![]() Are we staying with the exact canon backgrounds? Or tweaking them a little? Like, say, instead of space colonies, there are floating colonies in the sky or something. However, we do it, awesometastical. Just know that I will always secretly think my was best. Not that you guys aren't giving out great ideas; I'm just self-centered. Let's say it's because I've been playing Dermails for so long...that sounds good.If you can find steampunk themes for the board, I'd love it! I tried to find some for the board back when I first made it, but I couldn't find any. I just made do with what I could find. I'd love some, though! |

Ahhhhh! I LOVE the idea of floating colonies, rather than spacial ones! It fits in better with the whole steampunk idea. And...crap I forgot. |

Okays... as far as premises go, I guess for me it's hard to imagine a 'translated to steampunk' version of the entire series. Was more thinking along the lines of having to use cogwheels instead of megabytes to tie the whole world (back) together – literally, create a steampunky situation after the series. Like, after something-something has happened, it's no longer possible to use tech as we know it How that could happen eludes me at this point, but for modern peeps to recreate means for e.g. modern warfare, space craft, and navigation that they were used to before the L33t Apokalyptic Doomsday Device ruined the party, could lead the people to using nuts and bolts again. In my mind, at least. Heh. Of course, that would mean more action for hacking genius Heero, among others, because snooping around in a company's database is then no longer a desk job. More low-tech solutions, to be thought up by minds that are used to high tech stuff. Could be exciting... right? Ellingphant-powered tanks; homing pigeon-based navigation for those who don't own an heirloom compass; scrapheap forts with history-inspired cannons; vehicles made out of metal shipping containers; morse code beat poetry for entertainment, because poetically inclined nerds have to have something to do as well; insane graffiti on old factory walls, declaring "God Ate My Plastic Bobble-Head" – et cetera ad infinitum. Please tell me if I'm being a complete idiot here. Just trying to come up with something that could make the premise of the new setting as clear (and thus workable) as possible for agoraphobics like me. |

Hmm...I don't think I understand what you're saying, Motters. Are you saying they shouldn't have any technology? But steampunk is all about the technology. Like in the firstest ever steampunk novel, H. G. Wells' The Time Machine. GW is likewise all about the technology—gundams, vidphones, that hand-held propeller thingy Duo uses to save Heero with. If you remove the technology, that really would be AU. I don't know how anyone else is going to play it, but here's how Trowa will: he finds himself in a strange new situation and thus decides that his best strategy is to blend in since sticking out would draw unwanted attention. He therefore uses whatever futuristic technology he has to find out everything he can about this time period and then attempts to 'infiltrate' society by doing what everyone else does in this era—using bathing machines, stage coaches, steamships and gaslights, etc. As I see it, in the Star Trek universe they visited the past on occasion so it's not unreasonable to think that in the GW universe they could too, especially with those crazy scientists. Ooooh, I hope Professor G/Isis Galen is going to be in this! |

No, that's not what I said – just that I can't see what is steampunky at all about the modern GW universe. I was thinking up a reason how people could be persuaded to suddenly use an inherently different type of technology. But I see now that you were talking about something entirely different! You mean for the characters to actually go back in time – which requires a lot less world-building, and is actually quite genius. Sorry for the confusion. My mind was on my mother constantly the past days. Should have known better than to try and operate heavy machinery like my own brain.

::floats in on a bubble:: Oooh, okay. Princess! Do what you want with the board. I dunno. Maybe model it after your fic you were working on so we can provide inspiration to you? So we are all in agreement that we are 1. keeping cannon-esque pasts 2. the time line is in the past? 3. the colonies are floating "planet" like things that can be reached by airships? 4. The technology will be steampunk, with no modern technology available? 5. They are sent to this alternate dimension due to some sort of device/splodey/disaster? Characters Are: Heero: Chris Duo: Dour Trowa: E Quatre: BHG Wu Fei: Motley Dorothy: Princess All other characters will be picked up as we go along? Are we all in agreement that the universe will run on the principles of steampunk as defined by wikipedia? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steampunk I move to start the board next week on Monday. This will give Princess and I time to sort out the board. I think keeping her board is easiest if she doesn't mind. I also think that this weekend everyone should sort out their accounts, make them, make icons, profiles and the like. Sound good to you guys? ALSO! Love you motley. Hope your mom is doing okay. *smootchies you* Don't get frustrated, just let us do the hard work here. ^o^

Hope your mommers does well, Motters! *huggles* Just enjoy the ride and don't worry about "heavy lifting" right now—unless you want it as a way to distract you (don't know if it will or not), but that's the only reason! I can adapt the setting of the RP to how my fic will be...ish. Change underwater sea colonies to floating sky colonies.... Of course, the fic is entirely AU, but E keeps "subtly" hinting that she likes time travel, and time travel would keep the back stories the same, so we wouldn't have to work on the past and could focus on what they do next. ![]() At the moment, the board is set up to be for the fic, so I'll keep it like this for now (well, I'll add a few sections, like the sky colonies). If anything needs to be changed (such as country names), just let me know. There's also a map of "Europe" on there. Are they really time traveling (so these countries in Europe were present at some point like this), or are they flung into an alternate universe (like they do in sci-fi, too; wouldn't know about Star Trek, but they do it in Stargate all the time...I think when the writers get bored)? Either way is fine. To me, it would make a bit more sense to have them flung into an alternate reality. They could be flung into this reality the same way that they could be flung back in time: explosion, device, etc. Also, if it's an alternate reality, we wouldn't have to bother with details such as manners and speech; we just do a little research and any difference that pop up, we say it's just different here. However, going back in time also works. I may need to change the names of countries on the board, though, because Gundam Wing seems to have the same countries that we have now (roughly), aside from Cinq. Also, in the end, would we really care about details like manners and speech? If we go this route, I just need to know so that I can change country names. In fact, either way (because it's roughly the same way), I think I may have a way—if I liberally steal from Stargate (and any other sci-fi that does this the same way, which I assume is a fair amount). G/Isis will be the #1 cause. I'm sure I'll pick up a number of characters I don't really need. ![]() Go ahead and make accounts. Um, at the moment, it's under admin approval (sorry, E, I didn't see your character there until just today, but I'm looking now!), but I should get that changed soon...or I'll just make you all admins and you can approve/make your future characters in the Admin CP. No stalkers/spammers this way. Plus, guests can post in certain sections. Also, you should be able to use accents and such in characters' names now. Um...yes...I can work out plot with anyone who wants to be involved. If people (i.e. anyone who wants to be involved) can get on AIM, that would be super fantastic. I'll try to remember to make an LJ post some time today with my ideas for how things can go, and then everyone can pick it to death, submit their own ideas, and pick everyone else's ideas to death. Doing this so that I have one central place of the ideas (I'll keep the e-mails while I work on things). Of course, feel free to keep putting out ideas on this thread—the LJ entry will just be my way of organizing the ideas is all. I will try to link to a few places, as well. Yesh, we should post great places to check out for ideas, e.g. steampunk sites, Victorian sites, anything else that pops up sites, etc. I'll get it done today...I should at least. Also, I like how "Duo: Dour" looks. ![]() Edit:
I'll add them! I can't find any for steampunk, but I'm sure there are a number of places I haven't looked at. If anyone finds one, or if anyone knows how to whip up a theme real quick (E found a site full of steampunk backgrounds), then that would super awesometastical. |

Everything Dezzers said sounds wondy to me. Also, if it would be easier/better to make it an alternate reality that isn't actually earth's true history, then that sounds good to me, too. Then we don't have to worry about being absolutely accurate about historical details. In Star Trek they often visited planets that were modeled after earth. In this one episode, a previous human visit to the planet resulted in one of the humans accidentally leaving a book behind about the 1920's and when the next expedition visited the planet, they'd found that the society had completely adopted the dress and culture of the book, since they were an incredibly imitative species. hee! We could come up with some reason why this could happen in the GW universe. Maybe they get flung into a parallel dimension or something? Oooh, hope you're completely over that norovirus or whatever it was, Dezzers! Both my parents had it this past week and said it was the most miserable thing ever. *pets and pets* Also hope your mommy gets a clean bill of health, Motley! You definitely need a break from RPing while you worry about that. Oooh, maybe you could write some acrostic poems to take your mind off things? ![]() |
